Animal Shelters
Animal shelters are excellent places to find a new pet. Shelters are usually run by local governments, or by caring citizens who form private non-profit groups. Shelters can be found under many different names, such as: humane societies, animal protection leagues, the pound, the cruelty society, animal care and control, foster homes, etc. There are several national organizations that help to promote the good work that is done on behalf of abandoned pets:
With the very real problem of pet overpopulation in the United States, shelters are bulging with large numbers of cats and dogs that are in need of a good home. These are animals that have been turned-in by their owners for one reason or another, or have entered as strays, with no one to claim them. Unfortunately, with limited space and resources, the majority of pets that enter a shelter must be put to death unless they are adopted by a new owner. Certain shelters are able to stretch their resources and have a "no-kill" policy in place, but tragically most facilities are unable to maintain this type of policy.
The good news is that you can make a real difference by bringing a shelter pet into your home. The cost is usually minimal, typically ranging from $15 to $75. The fees may already include shots and/or neutering. Sometimes the first veterinarian visit is also included in the fee, and if the pet hasn't already been spayed or neutered, you will be strongly advised or required to do so.

Microchipping your Pet
Animal Services has been microchipping pets for adoption for more than a decade. Chips are a great way to provide backup identification to pet licenses and we highly recommend the practice. Many veterinarians provide microchipping for pets, so check with your vet. There are also microchipping clinics in the summerwe'll have dates posted as soon as they are available. Our shelter has the capability to scan animals for AVID and HOME AGAIN microchips. There is also a microchip called an ISO chip that is commonly used in Europe but is new to the United States. We do NOT scan animals for the ISO chip.

HIDDEN ENEMY HSUS – The Humane Society of the United States Reptile breeders should feel pride in the progress they’ve helped achieve over the past several decades. We’ve unraveled many of the mysteries of inducing our animals to reproduce in captivity, and have made ‘Captive-Bred’ ( = 'CB' ) a common adjective in the hobby and industry. CB applied to herps is now understood to reflect ‘quality’ and ‘hardiness’ as pets. The percentage of CB herps available today dwarfs what we had just ten years ago, and is already making up a significant proportion of herps sold in pet shops. Just as it seems obvious to us close to the herp industry that this natural evolution is proceeding well, new threats to our freedom to keep herps looms in the form of two ‘new’ enemies – the H umane S ociety of the U nited S tates (HSUS) and P eople for the E thical T reatment of A nimals (PETA). The PETA are presently under scrutiny by the F.B.I. as a terrorism network because of their admission of funding extremists who have destroyed several facilities by fire. These closely-aligned organizations have remained largely hidden from our notice until recently. They have now set their sights on the reptile hobby and trade, their ultimate goals being to stop it completely.

Virtual Animal Shelter More Pets Solutions by Annie Berthold-Bond Care2.com Producer, Green Living Channels Adopt a homeless pet on the internet using Petfinder.com's easy search tool.
Simple Solution:
printer friendly version
Petfinder.com is the internet's largest virtual animal shelter, representing 32,000 animals in more than 1,800 shelters and rescue groups around the country. The site helps facilitate over half a million adoptions a year. The easy search tool on Petfinder.com can show you within seconds all the pets meeting your specifications in your local area or around the country. All you need to do is specify the kind of animal you are looking for (cat, dog, horse, etc.), the breed (you can put in mix), the age, size, gender, your zip code and the range within which you are willing to look (national or regional). It is worth taking a trial run on Petfinder.com. The search should bring up at least half a dozen matches in your area, enough to give you a great starting point. The only danger is falling in love with all the pets you see in the pictures, and having a pit in your stomach that you can't adopt them all.

INSIDE THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF THE UNITED STATES
For the past two decades, concern over the threat to the biomedical research community by the animal rights movement was centered on groups such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the Animal Liberation Front, and the thirty or so other organizations that openly advocate radical opposition to scientists working with animals. During this time, The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has worked methodically to gain a great deal of access to the public, the media and the research community because of its supposedly moderate public stance.
The fact is that HSUS is not a moderate animal welfare organization. A closer look at the Humane Society of the United States, including its personnel and programs, reveals a portrait of a hardcore animal rights group positioned, by virtue of its wealth and carefully crafted national and international affiliations, to do more damage to biomedical research than those organizations that openly espouse the radical animal rights ideology and agenda. The Humane Society of the United States Offers Reward for Information in Pasadena Rabbit Cruelty Case
The Humane Society of the United States
Friday, 8 August 2003 The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is offering a $2,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who threw a small lop-eared rabbit out the window of their moving vehicle while traveling on Highway One, south of San Francisco on July 14. Witnesses stopped to give aid to the very small, badly hurt rabbit who appeared terrified. The good Samaritans took the rabbit, now named Samosa, to a local animal shelter where she was medicated for pain and then was moved to Rabbit Haven, a local rabbit rescue group. Samosa is now recuperating at the House Rabbit Society shelter in Richmond, California. "In addition to her injuries incurred on the highway," said Margo DeMello, director for the House Rabbit Society, "she suffers from severe foot injuries possible caused from being constricted in a wire cage and loss of a considerable amount of hair possibly due to psychological stress." In California, animal cruelty is a felony crime punishable by up to three years in prison and up to $20,000 in fines. Under the law, individuals convicted of cruelty to animals are required to receive psychological assessment and treatment. In 1998, California was the first state to enact such a law. Today, five other states—Iowa, Colorado, New Mexico, Florida and Indiana—have similar laws. In New Jersey, Illinois, Maine, Texas and Nevada, it is mandatory for juvenile animal cruelty offenders to receive psychological counseling.

Disaster Planning Tips for Pets, Livestock and Wildlife The Humane Society of the United States Offers Disaster Planning Tips for Pets, Livestock and WildlifeWhether it's a large-scale natural catastrophe or an unforeseen emergency that causes you to leave your home temporarily, everyone's family can benefit from having a household evacuation plan in place before disaster strikes. Every disaster plan must include your pets! The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) offers the following tips to pet owners designing an emergency safety plan:
  • If you evacuate your home, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS BEHIND! Pets most likely cannot survive on their own; and if by some remote chance they do, you may not be able to find them when you return.
For public health reasons, many emergency shelters cannot accept pets. Find out which motels and hotels in your area allow pets well in advance of needing them. Include your local animal shelter's number in your list of emergency numbers they might be able to provide information concerning pets during a disaster.
Make sure identification tags are up to date and securely fastened to your pet's collar. If possible, attach the address and/or phone number of your evacuation site. If your pet gets lost, his tag is his ticket home. Make sure you have a current photo of your pet for identification purposes.

The Frederick County Esther Boyd Animal Shelter was established and designed to accept and house stray and unwanted dogs and cats of Frederick County. The shelter achieved its state certification in July of 1995. The operation of the shelter is overseen by the director of public works. The goals of the shelter are to provide humane care for the dogs and cats at the shelter, reunite lost pets with their owners, place dogs and cats in new homes, and to educate the public on responsible pet ownership.

Potential adopters must live in Frederick County, Virginia, or adjoining localities in Virginia. 2. Adopters must sign a contract agreeing to spay or neuter the animal. It's the law and all animals adopted from the shelter must be spayed or neutered. 3. The adoption fee is $15, plus a $45 spay/neuter deposit per feline ($65 spay/neuter deposit for canines). Total adoption fee for cats is $60 and $80 for dogs. The fee for animals that have already been neutered or spayed is $15. The spay/neuter deposit is paid to the veterinarian upon proof of spaying or neutering. The shelter is unable to accept credit cards.

Announce Spay/Neuter Vouchers for Spay Day USA
The Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter are joining thousands of other shelters around the United States in celebrating the th Annual Spay Day USA on Tuesday, February 24, 2004 Pet overpopulation is a problem that requires immediate and continued attention not just in Dearborn, but in all communities in the United States. According to the Human Society of the United States (HSUS), between 8 and 10 million dogs and cats enter a shelter each year, and between 4 and 5 million of these animals are euthanized, without the chance of becoming a loving companion within a household. Consider that two unaltered cats and all their unaltered descendants can number as many as 420,000 in just seven years, and two unaltered dogs and their unaltered descendants can number 67,000 in six years; these numbers reveal the urgency with which spaying or neutering must be addressed in the United States. With this in mind
