Site Map Credits Awards Statistics In the past we have not shared with our members the numbers of animals that we deal with on a daily basis. While these figures unfortunately show the large number of animals which are euthanized, they also reflect the many adoptions we are doing. In a perfect world every animal would have a good home. We do our best with the resources we have, but for many animals that is not enough. The support of the community in controlling pet populations by spaying and neutering is the ONLY real solution to this problem. Just remember that with your support over one hundred dogs and cats a month are adopted from the shelter. Without you, this would not be possible.

If you add to that the number of offspring of stray and abandoned animals, the total becomes even more staggering. Every year, between 8 and 12 million animals enter shelters in the United States. Some 4 to 6 million of these animals are destroyed because there are not enough homes for them. Some people refuse to spay or neuter their pet because they mistakenly think that it would be nice for their pet to have puppies or kittens. But what they don't realize is that each responsible home that is found for these puppies and kittens means one less home that is available for the thousands of shelter animals that are waiting to be adopted. Every day, animal shelters across the United States are forced to destroy thousands of animals for lack of responsible homes.

25. Operation Noble Foster
as during Desert Storm, many animal shelters and rescues temporary nurture, care andshelter Home individual or for foster homes all across the united states.
http://www.operationnoblefoster.org/
As mentioned by Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld in his press conference on April 21, 2003
Help our military have their Cat to come home to! Hundreds of requests for the fostering of pets have come in from members of our armed forces, National Guard and Reservists, that are being called to active duty as a result of the War on Terror, including the deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq. Just as during Desert Storm, many animal shelters and rescues reported markedly increased numbers due to the call up. Foster: to give temporary nurture, care and shelter
Home: individual or family's dwelling - also see, "where the heart is" Some people assume that because the war in Iraq is winding down, there is little need for more foster volunteers to sign up. Actually, troops will likely be stationed there a while and the military continues to deploy to replace those returning home. Even after the War on Terror is over, there will always be a need for such military pet foster programs as military are deployed abroad even in peacetime, sometimes with little or no notice.
Many in the military have pets and many may hope to have their pets returned to them when they come home. So there will be a continued demand for foster homes all across the United States. If enough foster homes aren't available, our service men and women may have no choice but to take their beloved pets to local shelters, many of which which are already overflowing.

The two studies, conducted by Colorado State veterinary epidemiologist Dr. M.D. Salman and sponsored by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, reveal that moving and other lifestyle issues were the main reasons given by pet owners when surrendering their animals to shelters. But the majority of those pets64 percentare euthanized instead of adopted into new homes.
The studies also found that the majority of pet owners who surrender their animals to shelters are under 30 years of age and that more dogs are taken to shelters than cats and all other animals combined.
"Euthanasia of domestic pets in the United States is an epidemic," Salman said. "These studies give us the first glimpse of why so many pets are entering shelters and what happens once they are surrendered by their owners."
About 1,000 shelters in the United States responding as part of Shelter Statistics Survey accepted an estimated 4 million pets each year in 1994, 1995 and 1996. Of those sent to the reporting shelters that participated in the study, about 64 percentor 8.2 million petswere euthanized.

"Human beings aren't superior, we're just different...We need to think not in terms of a hierarchy, but what I call a 'holoarchy,' a seamless web of life." - Dr. Michael W. Fox, HSUS Environmental Studies Director, quoted in Trashing the Economy by Ron Arnold and Alan Gottleib, 1993
"Our goal is to get sport hunting in the same category as cock fighting and dog fighting. Our opponents say that hunting is a tradition. We say traditions can change." - Wayne Pacelle, HSUS Vice President, quoted in Bozeman Daily Chronicle, October 8, 1991
"...In promoting the rights of animals, we are doing so in a world where animals do not have equal status; indeed can not and will not have equal status. The human species... will never concede equality to animals and will, I predict, resist with increasing vehemence all attempts to endow them with such." - John A. Hoyt, HSUS chief executive officer, quoted in Animal Scam by Kathleen Marquardt
"Only 7% of Americans are hunters. That means there are more of us than there are of them. It is simply a matter of democracy. The majority rules in a democracy. We are going to use the ballot box and the democratic process to stop all hunting in the United States... We will take it species by species until all hunting is stopped in California. Then we will take it state by state." - Wayne Pacelle, Full Cry, October 1990

Pound Seizure: The Shame of Shelters
The public and private pounds and shelters of the United States were established to care for homeless animals, for both humane and public health reasons. Some are brought to the shelters by guardians who can no longer keep them but usually hope they will be adopted. Others are brought in by concerned individuals, police, or animal control officers. These animals have been abandoned by their families, have run away from home, or have simply gotten lost. While shelters sometimes take in other animals, most of their charges are dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens, almost all of them former companion animals or their offspring.
Pound Seizure Defined
Pound seizure means that animals who arrive in a pound or shelter and who are not claimed by former or new guardians within five days(1), are required by law to be turned over on demand to laboratories for experimentation.
Pound seizure is illegal in England, Denmark, Sweden, and Holland. In the United States there is no federal law regarding pound seizure, but 14 states forbid it: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, South Carolina, and Hawaii.(2) Most other states have no law on the matter and leave it up to county or town governments to decide, but five states require pound seizure of government-run facilities. These states are: Iowa, Minnesota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Utah. There have been several anti-pound seizure bills before Congress, but none has been enacted.

For the year 2000 - 2001 they sponsored 34 concessionary Institutional Subscriptions to WildPro multimedia - this has enabled the Wildlife Information Network to make the information widely available to small organisations, particularly those involved with the rescue of wildlife and those in developing countries. Their generous sponsorship was the precursor of the "Sister Institution" scheme, whereby each organisation that purchases an Institutional Subscription is invited to nominate a organisation who would not otherwise be able to afford a membership This information has been taken directly from the Humane Society of the United States Website: Mission Founded in 1954, The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) envisions a world in which people satisfy the physical and emotional needs of domestic animals; protect wild animals and their environments; and change their relationships with other animals, evolving from exploitation and harm to respect and compassion.
