Press Release: Pet Protection Bill Deserves Support
AB 536 is a Common Sense Solution to Prevent Suffering
A bill (AB 536) to prevent abuse and neglect of animals by sleazy breeders is currently stuck in a state legislative committee, just like unloved animals are stuck in dirty cages filled to the brim at puppy mills around the state. If this bill is killed many animals will suffer and die too. A new law to guarantee minimum standards of humane care is desperately needed. On a daily basis, animals that were originally obtained from puppy mills and other unscrupulous breeders are surrendered to [shelters, humane societies, and animal rescues] because they are sick, aggressive or behave badly. These animals have been treated poorly since birth. Puppy mill pets don't received proper care, love or nutrition. They are abused and neglected, solely to profit the breeder or pet store they are sold at. Sick pets are also a consumer protection problem. People often end up paying hundreds or thousands of dollars in veterinary bills to (hopefully) cure a puppy mill pet.

International Animal Rescue (Malta)
IVU News 2-97
The Malta branch of International Animal Rescue has achieved both national and international recognition. At home, their concerns have ranged from opposition to hunting and shooting to protection of marine mammals and the investigation of illegal imports and inadequate sanctuaries. Abroad, they have participated in international campaigns and have spent a lot of time sharing information and know-how with groups as far afield as Peru, Japan, the United States and Cyprus. Such has been the progress achieved that the society was chosen to co-ordinate arrangements for a film about birds in Malta as part of the popular UK television series, Absolutely Animals. A major problem has been the islands position on a number of bird migration routes and the appalling losses caused by shooting and netting vast numbers of birds. The situation has been exacerbated by the new Governments relaxation of the regulations after only three years in operation. The virtual doubling of the number of species allowed to be trapped and of the period during which wild birds may be killed has meant that vast numbers of birds are being killed just before the breeding season so that populations cannot make up their numbers. While the stringent regulations of 1993 allowed 203 days shooting per year, the new amendments allow an incredible 356 days, resulting in year-long carnage and considerable damage to species numbers.

All animals adopted through H.E.L.P. must be spayed or neutered, which is funded by H.E.L.P. If a pet is too young for the procedure at the time of their adoption, the family is notified at the time their pet reaches the appropriate age. Altering your pet is an important part of controlling the homeless animal population. Did you know that in 6 years, 1 female dog and its offspring can be the source of 67,000 puppies? L ocal San Pedrana Kathy Marin, owner of Pampered Paws Pet Grooming and Supply Store, has just returned from a three-day Humane Society of the United States/Humane Society International (HSUS/HSI) Exposition held April 3 rd th in Reno, Nevada, USA. Ms. Marin, a director for Saga Humane Society, not only represented the island humane society at the expo, but also actively participated in a week-long internship at the Portland Humane Society in Oregon, one of the largest animal shelters in the United States. Saga Humane Society participation in these activities was made possible through a HSUS/HSI "scholarship" program, which financed all of Ms. Marin's travel and accommodation expenses during her ten-day stay. During Ms. Marin's visit to Portland, she received hands-on training in various aspects of animal shelter operations, usually lasting nine hours per day. Ms. Marin experienced daily activities in several departments from receiving and fundraising, to adoption and foster programs. She also attended an all-day orientation for humane society volunteers. Ms. Marin described Oregon and Ambergris Caye as two completely different worlds when she explained, "The size of this (Portland) operation was amazing! Portland Humane Society functions with the help of 1000-plus volunteers and they continue to advertise for more. Saga Humane Society operates with less than ten very part-time volunteers."

Email Lost and Found Pets CARE's Web site originally had a Lost and Found Pet service. However, we decided that those folks with lost or found pets would be better off concentrating their efforts on services that specialize in this area.
The first steps in locating a lost pet are:
    • Walk or drive slowly through your neighborhood to see if you can find it. Contact local animal shelters to see if anyone has brought in or reported a pet that was found and matches your pet's description. Contact local veterinarians to see if anyone has reported a pet that was found and matches your pet's description. If you can identify the breed of the pet, check the Web for local breed rescue sites , and ask if anyone has reported a pet that was found and matches your pet's description. See our Favorite Links page for a list.
The first steps in tracking down the guardian of the pet you found are:
    • If the pet has a collar , check for the name/address/phone of the guardian.

elcome to the official website for the Korea Animal Protection Society (KAPS) and its sister organization, International Aid for Korean Animals (IAKA) . KAPS and IAKA are both Korean organizations dedicated to promoting animal welfare and protection in Korea through education, stricter animal cruelty laws and the continued development of the KAPS Shelter. We are Koreans who have been working for over 15 years on behalf of Korean animals by upholding Korea's true values and traditions to create a more compassionate and just society. The Korean Government would like both Koreans and the World to believe we don't exist, but we do. The struggle to protect Korean animals from needless torture and slaughter for greed began in Korea by Koreans and will eventually be won for the good of both the Korean people and animals. KAPS and IAKA were founded by Sunnan and Kyenan Kum, both sisters, who were born and raised in Korea. Growing up, they were inspired by their father who cared deeply for animals and was also an herbal-medicine doctor. He believed in Korea's true dietary traditions for living a healthy and well-balanced life. Unfortunately, throughout Korea's history there have been far too many wars and hardships, so that much of Korea's wildlife and wilderness had been destroyed by the 20th century. However, even during desperate times dog eating was never a dietary tradition in Korea. In the beginning, it was practiced purely to avoid starvation. Then dogs began to be consumed by a few older men for mythical health benefits regarding virility. It was just one of many obscure and marginal tonics that were different from Korea's true dietary traditions.
