"Life is as dear to a mute creature as it is to man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not die, so do other creatures."
quote from his holiness the Dalai Lama Millions of young, healthy, beautiful companion animals are euthanized needlessly each year because there are too many pets and not enough homes or people interested in providing food, water, shelter, medical care and LOVE to these animals. History of the Korea
Animal Protection Society T he Korea Animal Protection Society (KAPS) is the first organization in Korea dedicated to preventing cruelty to and educating people about animals. The society was founded through the efforts of KAPS director, Sunnan Kum. The shelter began when she bought the sickest looking kitten she could find at the market. When word spread that she was caring for stray and injured animals, people began leaving animals at her doorstep.
In a country of over 46 million people, KAPS is not only the first animal sanctuary, but unlike other "animal rescue" organizations in Korea, KAPS does not endorse a categorical separation between dogs raised as pets from those raised for meat. In fact, until the recent financial crisis in Korea, KAPS has maintained a no-kill policy. Ironically, Koreans are very sensitive to the idea of euthanasia, even if the animal is suffering. Many Koreans believe any life, however bad, is better than death.

Jackson, Wyoming-December 19, 2001 Pedigree ® Food for Dogs, title sponsor of the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race (IPSSSDR), is contributing one year’s worth of dog food to each of the communities on the race route announced Frank Teasley, Race Director. The communities on the 2002 route are Jackson Hole, Dubois, Pinedale, Lander, Evanston/Mountain View, Kemmerer and Alpine. The food is used by the communities as prizes during the festivities surrounding the IPSSSDR, and distributed to local animal shelters.
"We are thrilled to receive the Pedigree pet food contribution," said Corey Rybeck, Jackson Hole Animal Shelter. "We use it at the shelter and the doggies here love it"
The Pedigree brand actively supports a wide range of programs that promote responsible pet ownership and highlight the contributions dogs make to society. Such programs include Homeward Bound, a national pet adoption support program to encourage adoption of the nation’s 12 million homeless animals; the National Association for Search and Rescue; police canine units; and non-profit organizations that train and place service dogs for hearing and visually impaired people.

Pedigree joined the International Rocky Mountain Stage Stop Sled Dog Race as title sponsor of the 2000 race. The IPSSSDR, the largest sled dog race in the lower 48 states, is slated for January 29 through February 9, 2000 beginning in Jackson Hole and traveling through 14 Wyoming communities. Founded in 1996 by Iditarod musher Frank Teasley, the IPSSSDR is also known as "Wyoming Pulling Together, The Race to Immunize," due to the event's efforts to promote awareness of the need for children, especially those under age two, to be vaccinated against preventable diseases. Race organizers are working to link the race to the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games as an exhibition or event. For more information on the race, visit the race Website at www.wyomingstagestop.org or call (307) 734-1163.

Oliver, Alternatives in Philanthropy, October 1997 Oliver is editor of Alternatives in Philanthropy and author of Animal Rights: The Inhumane Crusade. He is writing a second book on the animal rights movement With a $46-million budget and 4.1 million members, the Washington, D.C.-based Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is the largest animal rights organization in the country. Founded in 1954 and staffed by 200 employees, HSUS is sometimes confused with local humane societies that find homes for unwanted cats and dogs. But according to its own literature, "we are not . . . affiliated with any local animal shelters or humane organizations."1 Indeed, HSUS’s image as an animal welfare organization no doubt helps account for its popularity with animal lovers, who pay annual membership dues of $10.00 (individual) and $18.00 (family). Yet HSUS is an animal rights organization, as much as the better-known People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PeTA) examined in the July 1997 Alternatives in Philanthropy As that issue emphasized, donors who wish to support organizations that help animals must understand the difference between animal rights and animal welfare. Animal rights organizations, which emerged in the early 1980s, seek to

At The Humane Society of the United States, we receive a lot of inquiries about our role with local shelters. The HSUS is not a parent organization for local humane societies, animal shelters, or animal care and control agencies. Each is an independent organization, governed by its own bylaws and board of directors (in the case of humane societies), or local ordinances and officials (in the case of animal care and control agencies). Funding for local humane societies largely comes from donations and bequests. Animal care and control programs are generally funded by the local government. Want to learn more? Get the Pets for Life e-newsletter. Enter e-mail address: While The HSUS does not operate or have direct control over any animal shelter, we do work on the national level to abolish large-scale abuses of animals, employing educational, investigative, and legislative means to eliminate cruelty and promote animal welfare. We produce literature, training materials, and other professional services for their use. We also provide financial assistance to animal shelters in special circumstances such as natural disasters, or through grants for special programs. The vast majority of our assistance to shelters is in the form of training and professional development, publications, program services, and campaigns. Here are some of the programs and services we offer to animal shelters and humane organizations.

While the Humane Society is actually an International Organization, I am dealing with local Humane Societies and Pet Shelters in this article. There are an estimated 4 to 6 million dogs and cats euthanized in America each year because they are unwanted. In my experience, this is a terrible waste. There are so many unwanted pets in this country, if you are in the market for a new pet, why not check with your local Humane Society or Pet Shelter? Even if you are not in the market for a pet, your local animal shelters can always use your help and donations. bodyOffer(24342) The first week in November is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, and these shelters do so much more than finding unwanted animals new homes. They also check out cases of abuse, rescue animals during disasters (not only house pets, but wild animals also), protect endangered animals, make sure that animals used in research are well cared for, and so many other things. There are several things that you can do to support the Humane Society or your local animal shelter. While monetary gifts, no matter how large or small are always appreciated, they can always use food, old blankets and towels, and volunteers. Volunteers can not only spend some time with the animals, bathing, walking and playing, but can also help in cleaning the kennels and feeding.
