http://www.pethelp.net/sheltersupport.htm
Animal shelter workers can be tough on people who give up pets. There are a number of reasons why this is so. It's as important for the general public to understand the problem with unwanted pets as it is for the shelter workers to consider their role in it. Shelter Views
Too many people adopt pets for the wrong reasons: to entertain the kids, enhance self images, for fun, prestige, companionship, to make money. Any adoption of a living animal to meet the needs of a person will end up in suffering on the part of the animal; social animals left alone for endless hours, untrained animals permitted to become neighborhood nuisances, exotic and wild animals improperly cared for until they can no longer be saved. Animal shelter workers try to undo the harm with limited resources. Overworked and underpaid, they develop an unflattering opinion of the average pet owner. Public Views
How to Change these Limited Views

Shelter workers are immersed in dog and cat psychology. They live and breathe housetraining and aggression prevention tips and they are more than willing to offer this information to any pet owner that is interested. The trouble is, by the time the pet owner is at the shelter, it's much too late for advice. Shelter workers offer education opportunities where they will actually do some good; in schools, on the internet and at public gatherings so that the general public has access to the wealth of preventative information before it's too late. Members of the general public may not be able to work full time at a shelter or adopt a pet but they are often willing to volunteer or donate supplies.

Owners shall refrain from tying animals on public property where such an action impedes the safe use of any public place. Owners shall enclose female dogs and cats in heat to prevent contact with male animals.

Frequently Asked Questions The most asked question in the Animal Control field is
"Why put animals to sleep?". No one in the Animal Control field likes to put animals to sleep. It is a necessary job due to people's irresponsible behavior of not taking better care of their animals. The answer is simply there are not enough homes for them all. A large number of animals enter Animal Shelters all across the United States on a daily basis. This is mostly due to not enough animals being spayed or neutered. Animals that breed at will produce 6-12 animals per litter. This cycle happens twice a year. This alone leads to a staggering number of animals. It is said a pair of uncontrolled breeding cats will produce 13,968,290 cats in a ten year breeding life. Two dogs will produce 4,372 dogs in 7 yrs. It is not hard to see when considering how many animals are out there that are not spayed or neutered and allowed to breed at will causes the over population problem we are faced with today. How can I help control the pet population?

We give thanks for the many benefits and privileges we, who live in a great and compassionate society, enjoy. In a culture such as ours, we are indeed our "brother's keeper." It falls to those of us who are able, to care for those who are not. Friends of County Animal Shelters is proud to be guardian and defender of a very special group - the lost and abandoned animals in the shelters of the San Diego Department of Animal Services FOCAS is especially grateful to you, our faithful supporters and friends, for your generous help in the past. Our mandate, to strengthen the adoption program at the DAS so that homes can be found for as many animals as possible, is costly. We pay boarding and veterinary costs for animals adopted from the shelters in the name of FOCAS, and we help FOCAS foster parents with their expenses. We help pay shelter fees and veterinary costs for those adopters with limited funds. We continue to provide some funding for intranasal bordetella and assist in providing immediate care for ailing cats and dogs in the shelters. We continue, with every breath of our being, to educate the public regarding the importance of spaying and neutering to ameliorate and ultimately end the horror of "putting to sleep" the thousands of healthy animals (perhaps once loved and valued) simply because there are not enough homes for them. Many people have fallen on hard times, and we must bear witness to the suffering and dislocation of their animals.

Adopting pets from the humane society or local animal shelter
Pet adoption services from the Humane Society. A brief history of the Society, costs involved, and other ways to help the Society such as making donations.
While the Humane Society is actually an International Organization, I am dealing with local Humane Societies and Pet Shelters in this article. There are an estimated 4 to 6 million dogs and cats euthanized in America each year because they are unwanted. In my experience, this is a terrible waste. There are so many unwanted pets in this country, if you are in the market for a new pet, why not check with your local Humane Society or Pet Shelter? Even if you are not in the market for a pet, your local animal shelters can always use your help and donations. bodyOffer(24342) The first week in November is National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, and these shelters do so much more than finding unwanted animals new homes. They also check out cases of abuse, rescue animals during disasters (not only house pets, but wild animals also), protect endangered animals, make sure that animals used in research are well cared for, and so many other things. There are several things that you can do to support the Humane Society or your local animal shelter. While monetary gifts, no matter how large or small are always appreciated, they can always use food, old blankets and towels, and volunteers. Volunteers can not only spend some time with the animals, bathing, walking and playing, but can also help in cleaning the kennels and feeding.
