Hearts United for Animals is a no-kill shelter, sanctuary and animal welfare organization dedicated to the relief of suffering. We take the creatures who are lost, afraid, hungry or ill and comfort them, give them a warm soft bed, good food, medical care and most of all, love. In many ways this is a very easy thing to do because these are lovely grateful animals who give a world of love in return. In other ways, it is very difficult because the number of animals in need is so large. Hearts United for Animals not a typical shelter. There are no cages. The dogs share large fenced fields where they romp and play with friends. We know and love every one of our dogs. Every dog that is adopted from Hearts United for Animals has been altered, is current on all vaccinations, is heartworm negative and is on heartworm and flea preventative. We can tell you in detail about their personalities and likes and dislikes. Hearts United for Animals has two shelters. Our new shelter is located on a 65 acre farm. The first shelter is located on a 40 acre tree farm. We have over 250 dogs at any time. We rescued approximately 1500 dogs last year. All of the dogs at this Shelter are well loved and happy. Assessing the Adoptability of Shelter Animals Dirk Dekens, DVM CFHS Despite the ongoing efforts of many dedicated people and organizations, companion animal overpopulation continues to be a world-wide and serious problem. As the human population continues to grow at an alarming rate, so does the population of companion animals. In 1990, in the United States alone, the dog and cat population was estimated at 55 million dogs and 58 million cats. For the year 2000, projections at that time were 66 million dogs and 69 million cats (AVMA, Vol 198, No 7, April 1998). Number of Dogs and Cats Euthanized Accurate numbers of dog and cat ownership in Canada are difficult to come by. According to the October 1997 issue of the Canadian Veterinary Journal, the estimated population of dogs in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan was 675,000. There were an estimated 1,065,000 cats. According to these statistics, 13.6% of the dog population and 10.2% of the cat population were euthanized at humane societies and veterinary clinics across the prairie provinces in 1995. The numbers do not include dogs and cats euthanized by municipal pounds, research facilities or breeders, nor do they account for the number of dogs and cats who died on their own. My sense is that the actual turnover for the prairie provinces in 1995 was 15 to 20% for dogs and 20 to 25% for cats.
