Animal Health and Nutrition Programs Animal Health and Nutrition Programs are currently offered in the Roane County area to local livestock producers. The program focuses on the importance of identifying signs of disease in livestock and addresses ways to maintain optimum health through health programs and good nutrition. The Roane County extension agent teaches local livestock producers ways to target and help identify problems in a herd and how to contain them when they do occur. Another primary focus of the program is to identify and discuss the realities of bio-terrorism and its relationship to local livestock producers. The program will help identify the importance of a network of communication in case of a bio-terrorist attack on local herds and instruct local livestock farmers how to react to the situation. For more information about Animal Health and Nutrition Programs contact the Roane County Extension Office at its local number (304) 927-0975 or the Office of Agricultural and Natural Resources at (304) 766-5711.

Livestock and livestock products are of particular concern for food safety and public health, because of the perishable nature of many livestock products, the potential for spread of disease and parasites from animal to humans, and the impact of animal products on human nutrition.
Animal products make important contributions to improved human nutrition, especially through their contribution of micronutrients to the diet.

Nutrient Requirements of Horses

The objective of this project is to prepare a report that will evaluate the scientific literature on the nutrient requirements of horses and ponies in all stages of life and management techniques for feeding horses and ponies. The report will address all classes of horses and ponies during various physiological life phases, nutrient requirements, deficiencies, and general considerations for feeding equines. Updated information on the composition of feeds, feed additives, and other compounds routinely fed to horses will be included. Physiological factors affecting production and performance and various management circumstances will be addressed. A computer program will be developed to accompany the report and will function to predict nutrient requirements. All information contained in the report and computer model will be based on scientific input obtained from various sources, scientific literature, reports, and reviews. Nutrient Requirements of Small Ruminants
Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats
Report Released - See our Petdoor site for more information

An ad-hoc committee will revise the 1985 and 1986 publications on Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Nutrient Requirements of Cats. These two publications, originally published as two separate documents, will be revised in a single report. The new report will provide updated estimates of requirements for all nutrients and will contain discussions of nutrient metabolism, toxicity, deficiency, and nutritionally-related disease in both dogs and cats. Information on the impacts of physiological status, temperature, breed, age, and environment on nutrient requirements also will be included. The revised report will address unique biological characteristics affecting nutrient digestion and utilization. General considerations regarding feed ingredients, diet formulation, feed processing and manufacturing will be presented. Principles of feeding dogs and cats that serve as pets and laboratory animals will be addressed.

In the home, or on the farm, animals of various sizes and shapes, species and breeds, sexes and ages are our companions and charges. We are responsible for their health and well being. Indeed, without our help, most would not survive infancy let alone thrive as adults. And their collective success, in turn, sustains our own. To maintain profitability, livestock producers need access to innovative, yet sound animal health management concepts.
Much of what we know about human nutrition and health applies directly to animal care. The role key nutrients such as protein, minerals and carbohydrates play in a healthy diet are well documented. This accumulated knowledge determines the formulation of pet foods and livestock feeds as well as supplements and nutraceuticals designed to promote animal health.
Currently, Glanbia Nutritionals is developing processes for extracting specific nutritional elements from their natural context to discover how these bioactive fractions deliver health benefits beyond basic nutrition. And how they facilitate and enhance physiological functions as they change and evolve throughout an animal's lifetime.
