Anguilla Where to Stay Vacation Rentals Guide Cruise Directory Other Caribbean destinations So why has this small, laid-back island been so slow to develop? There are upscale resorts, fine restaurants, and a couple of nightclubs, but no casinos, golf courses, or duty-free shopping. An Anguilla holiday showcases the S factors: sun, sand, sea, and solitude. You could add snorkeling at the six marine parks, scuba diving the several wrecks, and shopping in quite a few new art galleries. But the sightseeing is limited, and the interior of the island is fairly featureless. Field Notes BEACHES You can people watch at lovely Shoal Bay, or make your way to Little Bay, where dramatic cliffs line a small gem of a beach. The sand is more gray than white, and it takes some effort to get there – a rope and a net ladder make the hike down and up the cliff a bit easier – unless you arrive by boat. The bay is protected as a marine park, so swimming and snorkeling are joys, and the bird life can keep you happily distracted for hours. SAILING DINING Kick back with a fresh-from-the-sea grilled lobster at a beachside shack, or dress up for lobster crepes in an elegant “Euro-Caribbean” restaurant that combines continental and West Indian cuisines; Anguillan pea soup is a local favorite. Wine lovers take note: The famed Malliouhana Restaurant at Meads Bay has a 25,000-bottle wine cellar.

Despite being out of the way, Anguilla has been inhabited, in some shape or form, for tens of thousands of years. Archaeologists recently discovered remains of the largest rodent known to have walked the earth - it was reckoned at about 3 feet (1 metre) high and weighing up to 350 pounds (160 kilos) and became extinct from Anguilla about 20,000 years ago. More recently the island was inhabited from about 2000 BC by the Arawak Indians who had gradually moved up through the Caribbean island chain from South America in their dugout canoes. 42 Amerindian archaeological sites of interest have been uncovered in Anguilla revealing many artifacts attesting to their presence and the richness of their culture. Many examples can now be seen at the National Trust Museum.
The English colonised the island in about 1650 but were themselves wiped out by the Caribs, a warrior people from South America, in 1656. The power struggle between the English and the French in the Caribbean dominated Anguilla's history for the next 150 years and severely disrupted their basic cash crop economy. Anguillans experienced many hardships trying to eke out a living during political wrangling between these two powers.
The British Empire set up a new administrative framework for their territories in the region in 1824. In short, Anguilla was to be administered over by St. Kitts and lacked any real autonomy. Anguillans resented this as they felt those in St. Kitts were unaware and uninterested in the needs of Anguillans. These seeds of discontent were to come to a head some 145 years later.

The name 'Anguilla' means 'eel' and well describes its long, thin shape. Its people are of mixed origins, though primarily of African descent. The island is very flat with its highest point at a little over 200 feet (70 metres). Rainfall levels are low and the resulting vegetation is mostly small trees and bush.
Photo by Carol Lee Anguilla's position and basic geology has contributed much to its appeal; it is quiet, secluded and peaceful. It is widely regarded as having the best beaches in the Caribbean. With its exclusive resorts and fine dining Anguilla appeals to the discerning visitor. It has also, in more recent times, continued to grow as a centre for offshore banking. Anguilla's other attractions include , its sights and places of interest and opportunities to shop . Anguilla has a distinct culture, a product of its peculiar

Anguilla Culture Anguilla's West Indian culture is a blend of British and African influences. Because of the dry and barren nature of the island, the small population on Anguilla has traditionally struggled to make ends meet and has looked toward the sea, in the form of fishing and boatbuilding, for its livelihood. One consequence of this seafaring heritage is a penchant for boat racing. Aside from the boxy modern buildings in The Valley, visitors will notice that the predominant architectural style on Anguilla is unfinished concrete. Many Anguillians work abroad and return home periodically to make piecemeal additions to their property as their earnings permit, leaving foundations and unfinished walls scattered about the island. back to top
