Anguilla
Culture
Anguilla's West Indian culture is a blend of British and African influences. Because of the dry and barren nature of the island, the small population on Anguilla has traditionally struggled to make ends meet and has looked toward the sea, in the form of fishing and boatbuilding, for its livelihood. One consequence of this seafaring heritage is a penchant for boat racing. Aside from the boxy modern buildings in The Valley, visitors will notice that the predominant architectural style on Anguilla is unfinished concrete. Many Anguillians work abroad and return home periodically to make piecemeal additions to their property as their earnings permit, leaving foundations and unfinished walls scattered about the island.

About Anguilla Christopher Columbus claimed discovery in 1493. The island became a British colony in 1650, and was governed as part of Saint Kitts, Nevis, Anguilla, from the early 18th Century. Anguilla became a separate dependency with internal self-government following British intervention to quell two years of rebellion; formalized with the Anguilla Act of 1980. Pre Columbian

Anguilla: Culture and History Anguilla is a small West Indian island that is still a member of the British Crown colony. It is the most northerly of the British Leeward Islands and it is about thirty-five square miles in area. It has The Valley as its capital, which is in the middle of the island. The native language of the Anguillans is English. The island has recently been developing its tourist industry, as prior to that, the island had no visitor facilities. There was a government decision to invest in the facilities as the island has some of the finest beaches in the Eastern Caribbean.

Capital : The Valley Language : English Political Status : British Dependent Territory Area : 35 square miles (90 sq km) History Anguilla was colonized by English settlers from St. Kitts (then called St. Christopher) in 1650. In 1824, following a new British administrative framework, the island was to be administered over by St Kitts. Despite several entreaties to the British for direct administration by Britain, the Anguillans could not get out of this association. In 1967 Anguilla rebelled and declared its independence from the St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla Federation : they felt that they were ignored and misunderstood by St Kitts, the larger island. But Britain did not recognize this action. In 1969 British troops landed in the island and a truce was signed. In 1971 Anguilla became a dependency of Britain. It was officially separated from St. Kitts and Nevis in 1980. Good to know The crime rate is close to non-existent, as well as poverty.

  • 17. About Anguilla: A Uniquely Anguillian Culture
anguilla s most spectacular display of culture is the Summer Festival, beginning August Monday at 5AM with J Ouvert Mornin, a daybreak jam through the streets
    http://www.anguilla-vacation.com/culture.htm
Anguilla's history is embodied in the island's culture and heritage. From the ancient Amerindian settlements and European colonization to its recent 1967 Revolution, these and other events are woven into the tapestry of Anguilla's life that is passed on with pride from generation to generation. Holidays and festivals are centered on historical events. Anguilla's most spectacular display of culture is the Summer Festival, beginning August Monday at 5AM with J'Ouvert Mornin,' a daybreak jam through the streets to celebrate emancipation. Nearly a fortnight of dancing, competitions, fairs, costumes and parades color the evenings. During the days, as with almost all of Anguilla's major holidays, the island is filled with the excitement of beach picnics and boat racing, Anguilla's national sport. The Anguilla community is peaceful and joyous. The island is largely Christian in denomination with nearly one church for every two square miles. English holidays such as the Queen's Birthday, Whit Monday and others are celebrated, but English speaking Anguilla maintains a unique balance of all its historic influences that make this island a truly individual nation.
