How it began Women in capoeira Oxumare How it began All it began the same way as for everybody, with a big dream about doing this amazing and exotic martial art - capoeira. This dream came true last summer which I spent in the United States Of America. I worked in the summer camp called Seeds Of Peace in state Maine where I met Aus . In my free time and during evenings he taught me capoeira technics, how to play the instruments and sing the songs, as well. From the first moment I felt that Aus is like my brother. I spent two months training with him and I learnt the basics of capoeira. Everything nice has to finish once and so the camp did. During our trip to Washington DC, Aus took me to the Capoeira School of Mestre Cobrihna . There I gained new valuable experiences from Francisco B . who was the leader of the class. (Unfortunatelly the Mestre with most of his students were in Brasil at that time.) Then my steps headed back to Maine where I had a job . Before my return to Slovakia I had stopped in New York for 5 days where I visited the School of Mestre Joao Grande . The 1st Capoeira Angola Encounter was held there ( September 23th-29th, 2001). So I had a great opportunity to see mestres like Mestre Joao Pequeno, Mestre Moraes and a lots of other capoeira angola celebrities (

Healing the Land
Sermon preached during the ecumenical worship
in Luanda, 12 October 2003 Dear Christian friends, brothers and sisters in Christ, I. I bring you warm Christian greetings from the World Council of Churches with its more than 340 member churches throughout the world. This is the first time that an official delegation from the World Council of Churches visits Angola. Our delegation also includes representatives of the regional ecumenical organization, the All African Conference of Churches and of the sub-regional fellowship of churches and councils, FOCCISA. We have come on a pastoral visit to express ecumenical solidarity with the Angolan people and with the Christian churches in the country. We seek to understand the current situation and development in Angola, to learn about the process of consolidating the peace and discover how the ecumenical community can accompany the churches in their efforts of healing the wounds of war and rebuilding the country. The World Council is no stranger to Angola. During the liberation struggle, the WCC ministered to Angolan refugees and maintained active contacts with all three liberation movements, looking forward to an era of independence and unity for the whole country. When the transitional government failed and Angola plunged back into war, the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches, Dr Philip Potter, on the eve of the day of independence, issued a statement urging an immediate end to the conflict and expressing solidarity with the Angolan people and churches in their aspirations for a peaceful and united nation.

National Security
An elderly member of the People's vigilance Brigades Despite the party's international acceptance and domestic hegemony, Angola in the late 1980s remained at war with itself and its most powerful neighbor, South Africa. The insurgency led by the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (União Nacional para a Independência Total de Angola UNITA), bolstered by growing foreign support, spread from the remote and sparsely populated southeast corner of the country throughout the entire nation. South African interventions on behalf of UNITA and against black South African and Namibian nationalist forces in southern Angola also escalated. Luanda's reliance on the Soviet Union, Cuba, and other communist states for internal security and defense increased as these threats intensified. Intermittent diplomatic efforts since the late 1970s had failed to end the protracted war; indeed, each new initiative had been followed by an escalation of violence. Angola - Appendix B ). Although UNITA was not a party to this historic regional peace agreement, it was hoped that internal peace based on national reconciliation would also ensue. Whether the trilateral accord would be honored and whether Angolans would make peace among themselves were crucial issues in late 1988. History suggested that this would be but a brief respite from endemic conflict, but the promise of a future free of conflict may have provided the impetus to break with the burden of the past.

Completed Study Regional Restoration Across the Kwanza, Basin, Angola Michael R. Hudec and Martin P. A. Jackson Restoration of a 375-km-long section across the Kwanza Basin, Angola, shows three stages of deformation detached on Aptian salt, each caused by basement activity. First, tilting related to postrift thermal subsidence initiated early Albian deformation, shortly after salt deposition ended. Deformation waned in the late Albian, probably owing to thinning of salt lubricant beneath the extensional province. The second phase of deformation was triggered by hitherto unrecognized crustal uplift beneath the continental rise around 75 Ma (Campanian). Uplift of the thick salt plateau led to salt extrusion and seaward advance of the Angola Salt Nappe over the abyssal plain. Click on image
    to enlarge.
Exposure of the nappe toe removed the buttress provided by abyssal-plain cover, which rejuvenated seaward translation. Third, Miocene basement uplift below the shelf steepened the bathymetric slope and greatly accelerated downslope translation. This deformation is now slowing because thickening sediments on the abyssal plain have reduced the relief of the system and blocked salt-napped advance.

February 07, 2003 Children flock back to Angola’s schools A campaign backed by the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Angolan government will send 250,000 Angolan children back to school on Monday. The “Back to School” campaign was launched in the central Angolan provinces of Bie and Malanje. Return to normality The campaign is designed to officially endorse a return to education as part of Angola’s recovery from three decades of civil war. Currently 44 percent- one million - of Angola's children are out of school. The campaign will start in Bie and Malanje as those provinces were two of the worst affected by the civil war. The project will eventually be expanded to 30 other Angolan municipalities, with emphasis on the three million returning refugees. Groundwork for the future UNICEF is partnering with the Angolan Ministry of Education and Culture to help train 4,000 new teachers, restore 1,300 old classrooms, and package thousands of education kits for students and teachers. "At a time of great hope and upheaval in Angola, no sector has the propensity for a greater flow-on effect to other areas of society and the economy than education" says UNICEF Angola Representative Mario Ferrari. The program particularly targets girls, as educated girls have more resources to provide for the health and education of their own children.

    Keywords: Angola, History/Ethno History
The present study on the history of the Angolan war of independence since 1961 focuses primarily on three factors that have contributed to the persistence of the conflict, despite international pressure for peace: ethnicity, nationalism and internationalization. Contrary to the usual characterization of the conflict as an international war by proxy drawn from the cold war period, the author stresses the role of the involved countries since the demise of this era. The continuing international involvement in this conflict is readily apparent by the important position occupied by the arms suppliers and mining companies of the interested countries.
The discussion of possible factors for the ethnification of Angolan society arrives at the conclusion that the Angolan example represents a case of “politicized ethnicity”. Party loyalties are determined by ethnic, geographic and regional affiliations and are instrumentalized by the political leadership in their struggle to obtain access to the natural resources. Ethnicity in this context becomes abused as the vehicle to mobilize the different ethnic groups which hitherto have been denied participation in the use of the resources of the land.
The results contained in this book are especially valuable for readers in the fields of conflict and peace research which are also interested in anthropological and political aspects. The appendices provide a chronological overview of the recent political and economic history of Angola.
