Capoeira Angola: (pronounced Capo-air-a Ang-o-la): One of many cultural weapons used to break the chains of enslavement in Brazil. Music was played during Capoeira sessions to teach the rhythmic heart of the art and to mask its power. In front of the enslavers it looked like playfulness, acrobatic dancing, and joking around. Eventually the enslavers realized its power and outlawed Capoeira Angola. Death was the penalty paid if you were caught during the slavery years. For almost 400 years Capoeira Angola was taught and practiced in secret. Only in the 1930's did this African martial art become legal to teach and practice. GRAND MESTRE PASTINHA, (1889-1982):

RELATED STORIES, SITES KINSHASA, Congo (CNN) Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe said Monday his nation was ready to help Angola put down renewed attacks by UNITA rebels that left a 1994 peace accord in tatters. "We are going to give material support to Angola to put an end to this war," Mugabe told reporters at the close of a five-hour meeting with Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, Congolese President Laurent Kabila and Namibian President Sam Nujoma. Zimbabwe, Angola and Namibia are already supplying troops and materiel to Congo to help Kabila put down a seven-month rebellion that has occupied at least one-third of the country. The meeting was held to discuss future cooperation in Congo. Mugabe did not elaborate on what kind of support Zimbabwe would give to Angola.

RESPECT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS Section 1 Respect for the Integrity of the Person, Including Freedom From: a. Arbitrary or Unlawful Deprivation of Life Security forces reportedly committed extrajudicial killings. Verification of reports of abuses committed by both government and rebel troops was extremely difficult, particularly those emanating from remote areas and those areas affected by active combat. Police participated in shakedowns, muggings, and carjackings; however, unlike in the previous year, there were no reports of any deaths as a result of police action (see Section 1.c.). Impunity was a serious problem. There were reports that FAA soldiers engaged in a scorched earth policy during the year in counter-insurgency operations, burning villages and killing civilians in Cuando Cubango and Lunda Sul provinces (see Sections 1.f., 1.g., and 2.d.). There were reports that soldiers summarily executed civilians suspected of supporting UNITA. The failure of the Government to provide adequate protection for civilians contributed to the number of killings by UNITA throughout the country. On June 30, police killed two residents of the community of Boa Vista in Luanda who were protesting their eviction and relocation of 13,000 families (see Sections 1.c., 1.d. and 1.f.).

The Kongo State stretches from modern Gabon in the north to the Kwanza River in the south. Portugal establishes in 1575 a Portuguese colony at Luanda based on the slave trade. The Portuguese gradually took control of the coastal strip throughout the 16th century by a series of treaties and wars. They form the colony of Angola . The Dutch occupy Luanda from 1641-48, providing a boost for anti-Portuguese states. In 1648 Portugal retakes Luanda and initiates a process of military conquest of the Kongo and Ndongo states that ends with Portuguese victory in 1671. Full Portuguese administrative control of the interior doesn't occur until the beginning of the 20th century. In 1951 the colony is restyled as an overseas province, also called Portuguese West Africa.

Angolan rebels claim government attack repulsed
    February 2, 1999
Web posted at: 1:20 p.m. EST (1820 GMT) JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (CNN) UNITA rebels in Angola said Tuesday they had repulsed a government attack on a recently captured provincial capital that is considered a gateway to the key oil town of Soyo. The UNITA rebel movement said a government counterattack on the northwestern town of Mbanza Congo, seized by UNITA last week, was foiled. A statement received in Johannesburg from the UNITA high command also said UNITA had engaged, and in some cases overwhelmed, government troops in fighting late last week in the Angolan provinces of Uige, Malanje, Bie, Huambo and Benguela. However, the statement could not be independently verified.

Angolan government clamps down on draft dodgers as war grows
    January 19, 1999
Web posted at: 7:46 p.m. EST (0046 GMT) LUANDA, Angola (CNN) As a U.N. peacekeeping mission prepared for a likely withdrawal from Angola in the wake of renewed civil war, the Angolan government began cracking down on draft dodgers Tuesday, warning young men to register for military service or face arrest. Men between the ages of 20 and 22 were told to register with authorities within a week and carry their registration slip with them at all times. Those caught without a slip face immediate arrest. Men eligible for military service will be called up at a later date. Following a 1994 peace accord with UNITA rebels, the government relaxed its recruitment drive for the military. But that peace deal collapsed last month as heavy fighting re-erupted between the two sides. After UNITA rebels repulsed a government attack on two of its strongholds, fighting spread to the major centers of Huambo, Kuito and Melanje, and two U.N.-chartered transport planes were shot down.

    • Note:
Civil war has been the norm since independence from Portugal on 11 November 1975; a cease-fire lasted from 31 May 1991 until October 1992 when the insurgent National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) refused to accept its defeat in internationally monitored elections and fighting resumed throughout much of the countryside. The two sides signed another peace accord on 20 November 1994; the cease-fire is generally holding but most provisions of the accord remain to be implemented.
