2. Angola: Geography & Climate
Geography Climate The geography of Angola is diverse. From the coastal plain, ranging in width from 25 kilometers in the south
http://www.angola.org/referenc/geography.html
The geography of Angola is diverse. From the coastal plain, ranging in width from 25 kilometers in the south to 100-200 kilometers in the north, the land rises in stages towards the high inland plateau covering almost two-thirds of the country, with an average altitude of between 1,200 and 1,600 meters. Angola's two highest peaks are located in these central highlands. They are: Moco Mountain (2,620 m) and Meco Mountain (2,538 m). The country is located in the equatorial tropical region, its climate being tempered by sea and altitude. In the northern half of the central plateau there are humid tropical conditions and in the high regions of the south, a dry tropical climate prevails. On the northern part of the coastal plain it is humid and temperate, while the center and the southern part are affected by the relatively cool Benguela current. In the interior highlands, the rainy season lasts from November to April followed by a cool dry season from May to October. Rainfall is high in the north and in the central highlands (average 1,250-1,750 mm) and decreases rapidly along the coastal plan (average 250-1000 mm). South of Benguela the average is less than 100 mm a year. In the capital Luanda, situated on the coast, the climate is humid during the rainy season (October-May). Luanda has a microclimate with a rainfall substantially lower than that of the surrounding areas - with temperatures ranging from 25 to 30C. In the cool season, from mid-May to September, average temperatures drop to 18-22C.

    Republic of Angola
Republica de Angola former: People's Republic of Angola
    Introduction
Background: Civil war has been the norm in Angola since independence from Portugal in 1975. A 1994 peace accord between the government and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) provided for the integration of former UNITA insurgents into the government and armed forces. A national unity government was installed in April of 1997, but serious fighting resumed in late 1998, rendering hundreds of thousands of people homeless. Up to 1.5 million lives may have been lost in fighting over the past quarter century. The death of insurgent leader Jonas SAVIMBI in 2002 and a subsequent cease-fire with UNITA may bode well for the country. TOP OF PAGE
