Capoeira Angola: (pronounced Capo-air-a Ang-o-la): One of many cultural weapons used to break the chains of enslavement in Brazil. Music was played during Capoeira sessions to teach the rhythmic heart of the art and to mask its power. In front of the enslavers it looked like playfulness, acrobatic dancing, and joking around. Eventually the enslavers realized its power and outlawed Capoeira Angola. Death was the penalty paid if you were caught during the slavery years. For almost 400 years Capoeira Angola was taught and practiced in secret. Only in the 1930's did this African martial art become legal to teach and practice. GRAND MESTRE PASTINHA, (1889-1982):

25. Art Of Angola
Wooden masks and sculptures of angola are not merely aesthetic creations, but play an important role in cultural rituals, celebrations and representing different aspects of life.
http://www.angola.org/culture/artindex.html
The Art of Angola As with most African art, the wooden masks and sculptures of Angola are not merely aesthetic creations. They play an important role in cultural rituals, representing life and death, the passage from childhood to adulthood, the celebration of a new harvest and the marking of the hunting season. Angolan artisans work in wood, bronze, ivory, malachite or ceramic mediums. Each ethno-linguistic group in Angola has its own unique artistic traits. Perhaps the single most famous piece of Angolan art is the Cokwe thinker , a masterpiece of harmony and symmetry of line. The Lunda-Cokwe in the north eastern part of Angola are also known for their superior plastic arts. Other signature pieces of Angolan art include:
  • the female mask Mwnaa-Pwo worn by male dancers in their puberty rituals.
  • polychromatic Kalelwa masks used during circumcision ceremonies
  • Cikungu and Cihongo masks which conjure up the images of the Lunda-Cokwe mythology. Two key figures in this pantheon are princess Lweji and the civilizing prince Tschibinda-Ilunga.
  • the black ceramic art of Moxico of central/eastern Angola
Prior to the late 1980s, all marketing of handicrafts were under the control of Artiang, an arm of the Ministry of Culture. However once this commercial monopoly over the production of art was removed, art in Angola blossomed.

http://www.angola.org/culture/sports/basket.htm
Basketball The Nairobi University Games earned Angola a bronze medal in men's basketball and, in retrospect, can be considered as the take-off point for Angolan athletics. The jersey colors worn by Angolan athletes were rapidly becoming more recognizable not only in Africa, but throughout the sporting world. That same year, the men's basketball team ascended to the highest competitive ranks at the IX All-African Championships, held in Rabat. Coached by Mario Palma, the Angolan squad had a modest debut, finishing third from last. Within two years, at the All-African Games in Maputo, the junior men's basketball team captured the gold medal, winning in a fashion that seemed to presage a decidedly golden future for Angolan basketball. These hopes were soon doused when, at the X All-African Championships in Mogadishu, the national team, under Coach Vitorino Cunha, finished dead-last in the tournament. By 1981, the popularity of basketball, in particular, sparked an upsurge of participation; almost overnight, baskets and backboards sprung up at every street- corner, henceforth converted into roundball courts. Exactly four years after securing its first medal in basketball, the Angolan National Team shocked those present at Alexandria's XI All-African Championships with skilful play that vanquished mighty Senegal and earned it a silver medal, bested only by the host Egyptians. It was the beginning of a "show" by the best generation of Angolan players ever, who were later crowned with three All-African titles.

Luanda - Culture Angola was teetering on the brink of war, even while moves were afoot to avert yet another flare-up of this protracted conflict. Human rights abuses were widespread. The government, dominated by the Movement for the Popular Liberation of Angola (MPLA), and the armed opposition Union for the Total Independence (UNITA) restricted freedom of movement, arbitrarily abducted or detained civilians, censored information, and conscripted children. Both sides violated cease-fire agreements and indiscriminate attacks on civilians and looting were a persistent feature of military operations. The food deficit had reached levels which had never been seen in the past. As a result, there was a drastic reduction in people's ability to function and their ability to acquire food. Average daily consumption of calories was reduced to 1 900 Calories per person. All these factors combined increased poverty, disease and infant mortality which reached the frightening figure of 320 per thousand. In order to understand the problem better it is only necessary to add that, according to a survey carried out by the Angolan Statistical Institute, more than 60 percent of the population lives below the poverty line and 80 percent of food consumed in the country has to be imported. http://www.angola.org/culture/sports/hand.htm
Team Handball In team handball competition, the women's squad has also earned three African Championships for Angola. Deprived of the spotlight and glamour accorded international basketball, the women made their debut in rather unsteady fashion, squandering their first big chance, in Luanda, at the 1985 All-African Championships, with a disappointing fifth-place finish. The next two years, however, witnessed the onset of the "true" history about to be written in this endeavor, starting with the win earned by "Ferroviário de Angola" women's team in the African Champions Cup, held in Owerri, Nigeria. The accomplishments of the national women's squad, under Coach Alberto Ferreira, are especially significant in light of the fact that none of their titles benefitted from the home-court advantage. Each was earned on foreign soil, which, given the immensely biased officiating currently prevalent throughout Africa, makes it a feat truly worthy of respect. National Culture
The Angolan culture must achieve fufillment within the roots of the rich Angolan popular traditions, taking part in the socio-economic development of the country and extending into the universal context. A certain amount of fundamental work is therefore needed to encourage the people to take action and participate in the national cultural life, creating and developing a strong mass movement which is the fundamental object of the cultural policy. These principles are contained in the final resolution of the most important forum held until then in the Republic of Angola, the first symposium on national culture. This important meeting reviewed the situation in this area and disclosed the principal problems while indicating the avenues selected for cultural development in Angola.
Even if the socio -economic situation in the country since its independence is not propitious to rapid evolution of cultural events in many sectors, the symposium started to implement the fundamental guidelines indicated by the party. these are notably the development of cultural action in the areas of music, dance, theatre, cinema, literature, plastic arts and museology. The purpose is to propagate mass cultural action in the most diverse forms. Such are the condition required for fulfillment of national culture that is scientific, diversified and of a new type.
