Alfred's brother, Robert Collett in the uniform of the Second Middlesex Regiment, and his wife Edith, in 1899. A little family history:
My great, great grandfather, HAMMOND COLLETT, was born at Wilby in Suffolk in 1839, to poverty stricken parents, but whose ancestors had been extremely wealthy. In 1851, he was in Hoxne workhouse with his father and three siblings, whilst his mother and two sisters were still outside. In 1861 he was a carter (man working with horses) and in 1863 witnessed his sister's marriage, where we find that he and she could both write - possibly a throw back to the family's former educated days? Around 1864 he moved to Brentford, where he became a maltman (there were many breweries on the banks of the Thames in this vicinity at that time) and in 1865 married MARY BRADFORD. She was still alive in 1881, but not found on the 1891 census. Mary was born in Kingston in 1840, and went to school with three of her sisters at Kingston school. (My cousin Michael has a sampler wrought by her when 14 and three others made by her sisters). Her father was a maltster.
They had four daughters and the following four sons:

Original and Contemporary Sources
"IT was on the morning of October 12th, amid cold and Mist, that the Boer camps at Sandspruit and Volksrust broke up, and the burghers rode to the war. Some twelve thousand of them, all mounted, with two batteries of eight Krupp guns each, were the invading force from the north, which hoped later to be joined by the Freestaters and by a contingent of Germans and Transvaalers who were to cross the Free State border. It was an hour before dawn that the guns started, and the riflemen followed close behind the last limber, so that the first light of day fell upon the black sinuous line winding down between the hills. A spectator upon the occasion says of them: "Their faces were a study. For the most part the expression worn was one of determination and bulldog pertinacity. No sign of fear there, nor of wavering...." Arthur Conan Doyle, The Great Boer War , London, 1901 My interest in Robert Baden-Powell, Founder of the World Scout Movement, has led me many places. A respected officer in the British Army, it was at the Siege and Defense of Mafeking during the South African (Anglo-Boer) War that he made his name and first gained public recognition. In researching B-P's role and the events at Mafeking, I came across a chapter by one of my favorite authors, Arthur Conan Doyle. That was enough to move me to read his entire book on the War

Imperialism in the dock - the Boer War

Flashpoint: South Africa in 1899
It was called "The Last of the Gentleman's Wars", but the Boer War, of 1899-1902 was in fact far from gentlemanly. It took the vast force of the British Army three years of fighting, three huge sieges and many battles with considerable loss of life, to overwhelm the Boers (Afrikaners) and achieve victory. At least 25,000 Afrikaners died in the war, most of them in concentration camps. The war also claimed 22,000 British and 12,000 African lives. And now the descendants of the Boers want an apology from the Queen. Boers besiege Mafeking South Africa in 1899 was an uneasy mix of Boer states, the Transvaal and Orange Free State, occupied by Afrikaners, the descendants of Dutch and French settlers, and the British self-governing colonies of Cape Colony and Natal. But to make matters worse between the Boers and the British, thousands of Uitlanders (foreigners, mainly English) had been drawn to the Transvaal by the gold rush. By the 1890s they were paying a considerable amount of tax and demanded equal rights.

South Africa, UK and Australia
commemorate the Anglo-Boer South African War of
30 May 2002 On 31 May 1901 the Treaty Vereeniging was signed at Melrose House in Pretoria. The peace treaty signed by the British High Command and the two Boer Republics ended one of the bloodiest wars on South African soil. On 1 June 2002 South Africans will commemorate the Anglo Boer/South African war of 1899-1902 during a ceremony at the Rand Regiments Memorial in Johannesburg. The memorial was rededicated in 1999 and now stands in honour of all men, women and children, whether white or black, friend or foe, foreigner or South African. During the ceremony wreaths will be laid by various Embassies and descendants of those involved in the war, in honour of all persons, who died during the war. Speakers include Dr Ben Ngubane, Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology; Major General Sir Granville-Chapman who will speak on behalf of the British Government; General (retired) C Viljoen; and Lieutenant General P Leahy from Australia. Since 1999 Government embarked on a programme of commemoration whose theme was to investigate the involvement of black people in the Anglo Boer/South African War. Highlighting this aspect of the war has meant that it is now widely accepted that this did not only involve white men and women. Recent historical research shows evidence that women, the elderly, children from black and white communities were victims of diseases and starvation.

Ladies and Gentlemen, For a long time, the cultural landscape of South Africa has been out of balance. To this day, one does not often see, around the country, the memorials and monuments that represent the heritage of most South Africans. It is only now that the first tangible moves towards redress are being made - to re evaluate "the conventional" wisdom of history, and to listen anew to the narratives and experiences of our elders. Ladies and gentlemen, as you know, the earliest major confrontations of Anglo-Boer South African War took the form of tree sieges - in Ladysmith, Kimberly and Mafikeng. The Boer military tactic to surround the enemy, blocking their exit and entrance, then waiting for them to surrender, had succeeded more than once in Boer efforts to conquer local African kingdoms and was to be, once again, their main strategy. In that war, Mafikeng was the first to come under siege. Mafikeng, home of the Barolong, had seen many significant battles over many generations, mainly skirmishes for control of this strategic terrain between the Barolong and the Khoisan. These were later to be followed by skirmishes with a succession of missionaries, traders, Boer trekkers, whit entrepreneurs and British colonisers.

The Zulu Mfecane spread from Natal throughout southern Africa. Andries Pretorius tried to unite Boers from Natal, Winburg and Transvval. The Europeans fought the sixth war with the Xhosa since the 1780s. A massive migration of Boer families began into the southern African interior, and resulted in the foundation of two Boer Republics, Transvaal ("across the Vaal River") and Orange Free State (after the Orange River). The British government annexed the coastal region of Natal. The British government annexed the Orange River Sovereignty. Boers attacked Moshoeshoe's Sotho kingdom (Basutoland).

Andrew Ardington, in partnership with legendary Anglo-Zulu war historian David Rattray, has created a lodge that evokes the drama and tragedy of the Anglo-Boer war.
Set on Three Tree Hill, the lodge offers panoramic views of the Spioenkop Battlefield, as well as Spioenkop Nature Reserve, home to white rhino, giraffe, zebra, and a host of smaller mammals and birds. The Idyllic setting belies the tragic events that were to unfold on January 24 1900, when Boer and Brit fought over Spioenkop in the bloodiest battle of the Anglo-Boer war.
With the majestic Drakensberg as backdrop, Andrew, whose grandfather took part in the siege of Ladysmith, introduces guests to the origins and causes of the Anglo-Boer war. On the following day, Andrew takes guests on a tour of the Spioenkop battlefield itself, where he brings to life the tragic events of January 24. With historic figures like Winston Churchill, Louis Botha, and Mohandas Gandhi all featuring in the battle, the story of Spioenkop is a fascinating and moving tale.
In keeping with the historic atmosphere, Three Tree Hill Lodge has been constructed using wood and iron so as to resemble the housing kits brought out from Britain in the nineteenth century. The lodge is stylish and extremely comfortable, with no luxury spared.
