ORDER HERE Browse the Catalogue The war with Johnny boer Australians in the boer war 1899-1902 The War with Johnny Boer brings together Australian eye-witness accounts of the Anglo-Boer War between October 1899 and May 1902. Each contribution has a wonderful story to tell and fits effectively into descriptions of the various battles and actions of the war. There was no censorship of letters in those days, 'which means that this is not a sanitised account of the fighting. As the war unfolds, the honest nature of the writing gives a graphic coverage of Australian actions. Traditionally, writers have avoided the guerrilla phase of the war from July 1900 to May 1902 and only superficial accounts have been published. The Editors of Johnny Boer have ensured that the guerrilla actions have been given more detailed exposure. As well as military enthusiasts, this book should appeal to history students, genealogists and medal collectors. Readers will find in this account of the Boer War an emerging Australian spirit that, a generation later, became famous on the cliffs of Gallipoli. A valuable index, comprehensive appendices and cross-references of people, units and events make this a valuable research tool.

The Boer War
by Neil Parsons The Boer War, otherwise known as the South African War or the (Second) Anglo-Boer War started at midnight on the night of Wednesday-Thursday October 11th-12th, 1899. The first hostile act of the war was actually deep inside Botswana, when Boers sabotaged the Cape-Rhodesia telegraph line somewhere near Mahalapye in the early hours of Thursday October 12th. On Friday the 13th the war began in earnest with a Boer attack on a British armoured train at Kraaipan south of Mafikeng. The Boers planned to capture Mafikeng and advance through Botwana, to capture Bulawayo and Zimbabwe. African soldiers were deeply involved in the war, particularly in and around Botswana. Barolong, Bakgatla, and Bangwato fought on the side of the British. Bahurutshe, Bagananwa and others fought on the side of the Boers. Hence the war is usually called the South African War by historians today, to stress the fact that it was much more than just an Anglo-Boer War. The Boer War Pages on the University of Botswana History Department Web-site tell the story of the war in Botswana.

    LIVING HISTORY
The end of the first modern war Lucille Davie 31 May 2002 It was an event tinged with sadness, yet relief. It was the signing of the Peace of Vereeniging by the Boers and the British in a marquee in the small rural town of Vereeniging, 60 kilometres south-west of Johannesburg, on 31 May 1902. It marked the end of the three-year Anglo Boer War, one of the bitterest wars in colonial history. That was 100 years ago on Friday, 31 May. Saturday, 1 June, saw a centenary commemoration to the many who died in the War: 22 000 British soldiers, 7 000 Boers, 24 000 black men, women and children, and 22 000 white women and children, many of whom died in almost 200 concentration camps. Speaker in the City of Johannesburg chamber, Councillor Nandi Mayathula-Khoza, welcomed dignitaries and guests led by Arts, Culture, Science and Technology Minister Ben Ngubane to the Rand Regiments Memorial, in the grounds of the South African Military History Museum in Saxonwold, Johannesburg. Australia and Britain were represented by Major General P Leahy and Lt-General Sir T Granville-Chapman respectively at a wreath-laying ceremony. The Boer forces were represented by General Constand Viljoen, former general of the South African Defence Force.

    • Historical Overview of the Siege of Elandsriver / Braklaagte Reports on the Centenary Commemoration Historical Overview of the Siege of Elandsriver / Braklaagte Elandsriver / Brakfontein can be seen as the last of the conventional battles and the first in the guerrilla phase of the war. It was also the first of many fought for control of the Pretoria - Rustenburg route. A British garrison under Colonel Charles Owen Hore had been occupying a post at Brakfontein for some weeks. Brakfontein was about to be evacuated and its 505 mainly colonial troops redeployed. The Republican force comprised some 500 men from the Lichtenburg, Marico and Krugersdorp Commandos, commanded by General de la Rey, General Lemmer and Commandant Steenkamp. On the night of August 3 – 4, de la Rey’s forces surrounded the camp and at first light, opened fire on a detail going to water horses. The artillery fire caused carnage among thousands of animals and the stench of rotting carcasses eventually proved as much a discomfort during the 13-day siege as was the persistent Boer shelling and sniping.

Cape Town 1996 R92 Commandant Ludwig ("Lodi") Krause compiled his memoirs in captivity in Pretoria early in 1901, shortly after being captured by the British forces. Born in Bloemfontein in 1872, he was unusually well educated for a Boer officer, having 4 university degrees by 1899, incl. an M.A. from Cambridge. Up to 1899 his career & that of his contemporary Jan Smuts moved together in roughly parallel fashion. Krause's family was a talented & distinguished one & this is exemplified by the career of his brother Fritz Krause, whose life "deserved to be made immortal.....through the annals of the ...film industry." A Pretoria advocate, Fritz Krause was responsible for the saving of the gold mines from destruction in 1900. After being captured he went on parole to London & was sentenced on trumped-up charges for "incitement to commit murder", serving 15 months in Holloway Prison. After the war he became Judge-President of the O.F.S. And paid a great deal of attention to penal reform. Breytenbach J.H. THE CENTENARY OF THE ANGLO-BOER WAR, 1899-1902
    SUMMARY
    BACKGROUND
The Anglo-Boer War broke out on 11 October 1899 between the two former republics (Free State and Transvaal) and Britain. As the war escalated Brittain brought reinforcements from Australia, New Zealand and Canada as well as some volunteers from other British colonies. The war lasted three years with a very high casualty rate on both sides. Since the governments of the Free State and Transvaal were both elected by the white population, historians in the. past generalised it by calling it a White Man's War. Apart from the fact that a war cannot be waged in a country without affecting all who lives within the borders, recent archival research has proved that the Black inhabitants of the two republics were affected more than was generally accepted. Both sides used these people as scouts, Iabourers and even, at times armed them and thus using them in a fighting capacity, The scope of the war was the biggest thus far on South African territory and one of the greatest thus far waged by Britain in Southern Africa. The Boer forces had a potential of 54 000 men but never more than 40 000 were empIoyed at once, whilst the British forces grew to 450 000 at the height of hostilities. Casualties were as follows:
British soldiers: 7 792 (killed) 13 250 (deaths from disease) Boers: 6 000 Women and children in Concentration Camps: 26 370 Blacks in Concentration Camps: 20 000+ (Official British figure: 14 154)
The condition in these camps were appalling, Epidemic diseases, malnutrition, insufficient medical care and dreadful sanitary arrangements resulted in the high death rate. In the white camps the death toll rose to 26 370 of the approximately 100 000 inmates. In the Black camps the official British figure was just over 14 000, but recent research proves that a figure in excess of 20 000 deaths among the 120 000 inmates of these camps is acceptable.
