History of Cape Colony from the Second Anglo-Boer War
This page deals with the history of Cape Colony during the period of the Second Anglo-Boer War (1899 - 1902) and in the early 20th century until Cape Colony became Cape Province in the Union of South Africa in Refer to History of Cape Colony for accounts of earlier phases. The Second Anglo- Boer War had no sooner commenced with the ultimatum of the Transvaal Republic on 9 October , than Mr Schreiner found himself called upon to deal with the conduct of Cape rebels. The rebels joined the invading forces of President Steyn, whose false assurances Mr Schreiner had offered to an indignant House of Assembly only a few weeks before. The war on the part of the Republics was evidently not to be merely one of self-defence. It was one of aggression and aggrandisement. Mr Schreiner ultimately addressed, as prime minister, a sharp remonstrance to President Steyn for allowing his burghers to invade the colony. He also co-operated with Sir Alfred Milner, and used his influence to restrain the Bond. Table of contents 1 The Second Boer War, 1899 - 1902

First Boer War
The first clash was precipitated by Sir Theophilus Shepstone who tried to annex the Transvaal (the South African Republic) for the British in 1877 after the Zulu War . The Boers protested and in 1880 revolted. The Boers dressed in earthtone khaki clothes, whereas the British uniforms were bright red, a stark contrast to the African landscape, which enabled the Boers to easily snipe British troops from a distance. After a British force under George Pomeroy-Collery was heavily defeated at the Battle of Majuba Hill in February 1881 the British government of Gladstone gave the Boers self-government in the Transvaal under a theoretical British oversight.

History of Cape Colony from the Second Anglo-Boer War
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition This page deals with the history of Cape Colony The Cape Colony was a part of South Africa under British occupation during the 19th century. It stretched from the Atlantic ocean eastwards: the final eastern boundary, after several wars against the Xhosa, stood at the Fish river. In the north, the Orange River, also known as the Gariep River, served for a long time as the boundary, although some land between the river and the southern boundary of Botswana was later added to it.

Since 1994, it has been broken up into three smaller administrative units: the Western Cape, Eastern Cape and Northern Cape. Parts of the Cape Province were also absorbed into the North West Province.

History Today
Nov, 1999 by Albert Grundlingh
Albert Grundlingh traces how the Boers' defeat by Britain became the crucible of a new Afrikaner nationalism IN A SOCIETY CHARACTERISED by continuous strife, the Anglo-Boer War represents a period of sustained violence. A devastating war, fought mainly by white protagonists, ravaged South Africa for nearly three years. The British scorched-earth policy during the latter part of the conflict reduced the country almost to a wasteland. The Anglo-Boer War was the closest that South Africans came to local war. Yet the war did not involve the total mobilisation of national resources nor the complete annihilation of the enemy. It was, however, a harbinger of the more encompassing and unlimited wars to be fought later in the twentieth-century. The commonality and centrality of the concentration camp experience in Afrikanerdom imparted a rich potential for possible future use along nationalistic lines. However, although the potential was undoubtedly there, it still had to be tapped and made accessible to a popular audience in a form which suited the needs of the nationalist enterprise of the time. While the war and the camps remained alive and prominent in folk memory, much of it was not readily and immediately converted into writing. Between 1906 and 1931 only nine books, comprising diaries and reminiscences of participants, were published.

History Today
Oct, 1999 by Iain R. Smith
DURING THE CENTURY SINCE IT TOOK PLACE, the South African War of 1899-1902 has never ceased to attract interest from the general public and debate amongst historians. Controversy over its origins, already underway when J.A. Hobson and L.S. Amery published their opposing interpretations in 1900, has continued ever since. Participants on both sides in the war found a ready market for their published accounts even before it was over, although some of the best were only published much later. Amongst the many books written about this war by both amateur and professional historians, the best known is Thomas Pakenham's The Boer War, which has been a bestseller ever since it first appeared in 1979. Well-researched and engagingly written, Pakenham's account has deserved its success, despite sniffy reviews from some academic historians. The wealth of visual evidence available about this war already indicated in the illustrated edition of his book which Pakenham published in 1993 is well represented in some of the books under review, where many photographs are reproduced for the first time.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as soldier in Boer War Note: This page contains two essays on the Boer War, one that describes the war and one that describes the British government's greed for gold and responses of the British people. The year 1899 saw the celebration of Queen Victoria Jubilee and the beginnings of unrest in South Africa Alfred Milner, the High Commissioner of Cape Colony in South Africa devised a plan which promised to not only create a Cape-to-Cairo confederation of British colonies which would dominate the African continent (over which he planned to rule), but also to gain economic power of the gold mines in the Dutch Boer republics of the Orange Free State and the Transvaal . The method of achieving these goals for the Empire consisted of precipitating a war with the Boers. The onset of the war is marked by the invasion of the Boers into Natal and Cape Province and their investment of Ladysmith, Kimberly, and Mafeking. These actions forced the British to abandon their original plans of offense in order to lift the blockades. The following war can be divided into two main parts. The first consisted of a "period of Boer commando successes," although it was reversed almost immediately after the British force arrived to capture the republican capitals; it lasted from January 1900 until June 1900. The conclusion of these battles led the British to believe that the war was over.

History and Culture of the Anglo Zulu Wars
The history and culture of Southern Africa is as diverse as its natural wonders which is no wonder as the two are intricately interwoven. From ancient African cultures such as that of the Bushman, to the tribes that speak the 11 official languages of South Africa, there is a wealth of African culture. Then there is the European history in this region including watershed events such as the Boer war. Of course there is also the legacy of Apartheid in South Africa and its miraculous transition to the Rainbow Nation. Discovering more about this side of South African history is also about discovering the beauty and hospitality of KwaZulu-Natal. This is the best classroom you will ever experience as guides take you over the now beautiful battlefields, and you are accommodated and wind and dined at top class game lodges If you enjoy art then there are some stunning paintings that powerfully depict various battles from these times There is a dearth of information on these historical times in the libraries and archives of South Africa, but there is no better way to glean this information than by listening to a passionate guide out in the rolling hills of KwaZulu-Natal
