Anemia
by Dr. Elisabeth Snead, DVM My pet is anemic. What does this mean ? Anemia is a condition where there is an abnormally low number of RBC (red blood cells - the cells responsible for transporting oxygen round the body) and/or a deficiency in hemoglobin (the pigment inside RBC that oxygen binds to). RBC are produced in the bone marrow and circulate in the blood for about 120 days in cats and dogs before they are destroyed again in the spleen, liver, and bone marrow. What causes Anemia? In simple terms there are three basic causes of anemia: blood loss due to hemorrhage (bleeding), accelerated destruction of RBC in the body, or decreased production of RBC by the bone marrow. Some specific causes of anemia are as follows: - reaction to certain therapeutic drugs
- infectious agents such as canine Ehrlichiosis (tick fever), hemobartonellla, or FIV
- blood-loss from trauma or blood clotting disorder
- parasites such as ticks or intestinal hookworms
- an immune mediated disease where the body attacks its own RBC
- cancer affecting any organ
- any chronic disease process
- toxins (zinc pennies, onions, etc.)

Henry Strongin Goldberg was born on October 25, 1995. Henry knows all there is to know about Pokémon, believes that Disney World is the best place on earth, plays soccer, worships superheroes and wrestles with his younger brother Jack way past bedtime. Everything he does makes his parents smile. In these and so many other ways, Henry is a lot like other boys his age. But this lover of life and everything Batman is different from other kids because Henry has a horrible disease that threatens his life. After a scary and difficult five years of endless waiting rooms, doctor's visits, blood tests, EKG's, bone marrow aspirations, IV's, surgeries, transfusions, drugs, scars and a bone marrow transplant in July 2000 that met with innumerable complications, Henry faces a very uncertain future. This web site is dedicated to helping people learn more about what a special and brave young man Henry is and to educate everyone about the disease he is fighting, Fanconi anemia (FA). Through raising awareness and money for research and encouraging people to register to be a bone marrow donor, our family strives to give Hope for Henry and other children suffering from this killer. We welcome you to the site and encourage you to tell others about it and to bookmark this page so you can keep abreast of Henry's progress.

What is Fanconi Anaemia ?
Fanconi Anaemia is a rare disorder found in children that involves the blood and bone marrow. The symptoms include severe aplastic anemia , hypoplasia of the bone marrow, and patchy discoloration of the skin. This is an autosomal recessive condition, affected children usually develop severe aplastic anemia by age 8 to 9 years. Treatment usually consists of bone marrow transplant. Fanconi Anaemia is not a cancer, though recent research has shown an association between Fanconi Anaemia and leukaemia. There are 8 types of Fanconi Anaemia; known as complementation groups A through to H. Some definitions:
Anemia
below normal levels of erythrocytes (red blood cells)
Aplastic anemia
anemia that is resistant to treatment; often accompanied by deficiencies of other blood cells.
Hypoplasia
incomplete / under development of a part of the body.
Pancytopenia
deficiency of all types of blood cells.
Recessive
(genetics) if the required allele (a type of gene) is not present in both members of a pair of chromosomes then that allele is not expressed.

Anemia-Related Laboratory Tests
Complete Blood Count
One test for determination of anemia is the complete blood count (CBC), a test that provides the physician with information on the number, size and appearance of red blood cells. The iron component, hemoglobin, and hematocrit are also measured in a CBC. The hematocrit is the percentage by volume of RBCs in the blood and can indicate possible anemia. From the blood smear portion of a CBC, RBC morphology can be evaluated for cell color, size, and shape.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 deficiencies may result in neurologic symptoms such as impaired touch perception and decreased reflexes. More serious conditions due to low vitamin B12 levels may include psychological symptoms such as memory loss, disorientation, and depression. These conditions may be seen either with or without macrocytic changes in the blood cells.
Testing for high vitamin B12 levels is less common, but high levels can occur in cases of chronic renal failure, either acute or chronic myelogenous leukemia, and in some liver diseases.

Disorders Sideroblastic anemia Introduction. Sideroblastic anemia (SA)is a complicated disorder and therefore difficult to treat. .
http://www.irondisorders.org/disorders/sba/

Disorders:
Sideroblastic Anemia:
Introduction Sideroblastic anemia is an enzyme disorder in which the body has adequate iron but is unable to incorporate it into hemoglobin. Iron enters the developing red blood cell (erythroblasts); here iron accumulates in the mitochondria giving a ringed appearance to the nucleus (ringed sideroblast). The mitochondria are overloaded with iron and hemoglobin production (heme synthesis) is defective. Sideroblasts are visible with Prussian blue staining and observable under microscopic examination of bone marrow. Because these ringed sideroblasts can develop poorly or not at all into mature red cells, anemia is the consequence. Sideroblastic anemia (SA) is a complicated disorder and therefore difficult to treat. . Often SA acts like iron deficiency anemia (IDA), but unlike IDA, iron tests are normal or increased with SA. Three categories of sideroblastic anemia are: hereditary, acquired or idiopathic. Hereditary Sideroblastic Anemia is due to a genetic defect; the gene is an X-linked recessive (not dominant) gene. It may manifest in both men and women but is seen more commonly in young males, maternal uncles and cousins. Hereditary sideroblastic anemia generally manifests during the first three decades of life especially during adolescence but it has been diagnosed in patients over seventy.

In December 2000 and January 2001 we were both diagnosed with a rare, life threatening blood disease called Fanconi anemia. It causes bone marrow failure; our bodies cannot make the blood we need to survive. Our only hope is a bone marrow transplant. Alex has found a perfect match and is recovering from her May 31, 2001 transplant in Cincinnati, Ohio. There is no perfect match for Matthew, in any registry throughout the entire world. We need your help, please consider getting added to the National Bone Marrow Registry through the Pearl Million-Donor March. Refer to the ' How You Can Help ' section.

Soaring with angels Greetings All:
We, again would like to thank everyone for their sincere and heartfelt support. We literally could not have come as far as we did without all of you. We regretfully inform you all that Adam passed away at 9:11 PM, Minnesota time, on February 27, 1997. He was peaceful and pain-free when he passed. His family was with him, as was most of the staff from 4A, who have care for him in the entire duration of our stay here. We will happily inform everyone, though that Adam is now soaring with the angels, watching down protectively on all of us. We're sure he is having go-cart races with Mark Muellen and showing his knife collection to Joey Adamson and fishing with John Dumouchel. We will miss him but we know he is in a better place. May God bless all of you and shower you with goodness, health and many miracles. Thank you again. The Day Family Adam's Uncle Bob went to Minnesota during 1/30-2/3 and took some photos. Adam was in great spirits despite the constant interruptions by a wide variety of physicians and assistants. Go to: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Hills/2219/
