Do you often wish you could throttle the folks who invented time and time keeping devices? These contraptions cut into your leisure time by making it almost impossible to enjoy "a nice relaxing day"! Well, here are some of the sparse historical facts, and now you can know whom to blame for your lack of leisure - The ancient astronomers! Your very own astronomical kin. Of first importance to early people, and upon which all people could agree, with any degree of accuracy, was the measurement of time using fairly large amounts of time. Large amounts of time are easily measured because the "clockwork" is supplied by the universe, itself, as seen in the daily and annual motion of Earth and the Moon. Even so, the more careful measurements of time were not easy to come by. One revolution of Earth constitutes a day and a "moon" is from one new moon to the next; but yearly measurements were not very simple to measure. In addition, a day is not very easy to measure accurately. It took some time before humans learned to measure the day from one noon (when the Sun is at its highest point in the sky) to the next. Hellenic astronomers added the missing 1/4 day to the Egyptian calendar by adding an extra (leap) day every four years, but most people ignored it. The calendar with a leap day was finally adopted by the Romans under Gaius Julius Caesar in 4 BC. Since then, the calendar has had one major modification, when Pope Gregory, in 1582, on the advice of astronomers, dropped the leap day in years that end in two zeros.

"The history of the origin of human civilizations and agriculture is, of course, much older than the documentation in the form of pyramids, inscriptions and bas-reliefs or tombs can tell us. A close acquaintance with cultivated plants and with the multitude of types and their differentiation into geographical groups as well as their frequently sharp physiological isolation from each other compel us to refer the very origin of cultivated plants to such remote epochs, where periods of 5-10,000 years such as concern archeologists represent but a brief moment."

    Chapter 3
Winston was dreaming of his mother.
He must, he thought, have been ten or eleven years old when his mother had disappeared. She was a tall, statuesque, rather silent woman with slow movements and magnificent fair hair. His father he remembered more vaguely as dark and thin, dressed always in neat dark clothes (Winston remembered especially the very thin soles of his father's shoes) and wearing spectacles. The two of them must evidently have been swallowed up in one of the first great purges of the fifties.
Suddenly he was standing on short springy turf, on a summer evening when the slanting rays of the sun gilded the ground. The landscape that he was looking at recurred so often in his dreams that he was never fully certain whether or not he had seen it in the real world. In his waking thoughts he called it the Golden Country. It was an old, rabbit-bitten pasture, with a foot-track wandering across it and a molehill here and there. In the ragged hedge on the opposite side of the field the boughs of the elm trees were swaying very faintly in the breeze, their leaves just stirring in dense masses like women's hair. Somewhere near at hand, though out of sight, there was a clear, slow-moving stream where dace were swimming in the pools under the willow trees.
The girl with dark hair was coming towards them across the field. With what seemed a single movement she tore off her clothes and flung them disdainfully aside. Her body was white and smooth, but it aroused no desire in him, indeed he barely looked at it. What overwhelmed him in that instant was admiration for the gesture with which she had thrown her clothes aside. With its grace and carelessness it seemed to annihilate a whole culture, a whole system of thought, as though Big Brother and the Party and the Thought Police could all be swept into nothingness by a single splendid movement of the arm. That too was a gesture belonging to the ancient time. Winston woke up with the word 'Shakespeare' on his lips.

And did those feet in ancient time
And did those feet in ancient time is a poem by William Blake from the preface to his work Milton ). Today it is best known as the hymn Jerusalem , with music by Charles H. H. Parry This is considered to be one of England 's most popular patriotic songs. It is variously associated (thereby holding a somewhat unique position) with English and British nationalism anti-modernism post-modernism socialist ideals, and Christianity . Jerusalem is the official anthem of the British Women's Institute , and historically was used by the National Union of Suffrage Societies. The poem was inspired by the old legend that Jesus , whilst still a young man, accompanied Joseph of Arimathea to Glastonbury via the nearby Roman port . Blake's biographers tell us that he believed in this legend.

Mans progress is measured by the sophistication of his tools. First, he discovered how to control fire. Eventually he invented the wheel. He built boats and learned to harness the wind. As soon as commerce developed in early societies, people recognized the need to calculate and to keep track of information. They soon devised simple computing devices and bookkeeping systems to enable them to add, subtract, and record simple transactions. Today, we are witnessing rapid technological changes taking place on a broad scale. However, many centuries elapsed before technology was sufficiently advanced to develop computers. Without computers, many technological achievements of the past decade would not have been possible. Let us now look closely into the development of computers.

Animal pictures are known from the ancient times . Examining today a big picturing made by pristine man on the wall of ancient cave more than 20 thousands years ago, one don't stop to surprise to the mastering, observance of its creator. Without doubt it was the genius. You may only guess what moved that pristine man, first artist, so realistically pictured an animal - wild horse?
The hand mark, wave lines, spiral, meander , indefinite signs, drew on mild clay - are among the earliest artistic memorials on the European continent. And the first uncertain contours in which one may guess animals picture. These figures are frequently not finished, no details, proportions are not observed. The realistic painting and schematic petrogliphs are coexisting in parallel. The small drawings on bone, stone and animalistic plastic appear. The massive short legged figures of horses, bizons are typical for pristine pictures. The first attempts of the perspective picture are made with application beginning in the pristine painting of two paints - black and red. The animal trunk is pictured in profile, and horns and hoofs - in face or three-quarter. The contour, plane painting gradually fills with details. Attempts are made to represent by parallel traits hair, yellow and red ochre tones are used. The relief contour enforces some volume, animal body mass wrinkles. A pristine artist used mineral paints, soot
