Master of Arts (M.A.) in Ancient Philosophy
(or: Happiness, Justice, and the Good in Ancient Thinkers)
OVERVIEW
This programme has several related aims:
  • to introduce candidates to how the key ancient thinkers addressed the question of how human beings should secure the ‘good life’ and how to ‘live well’. to develop an understanding of important concepts required for this endeavour, including ‘good’, ‘pleasure’, ‘happiness’, ‘desire’, and ‘virtue’. to introduce to the candidate important texts written by the great thinkers of the period, namely: Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus and Epictetus. and to develop the necessary reasoning and analytical skills for accomplishing this.
The study of these ideas has more than mere academic interest, for the ancient thinkers set themselves the task of securing for their students ‘the good life’, that is, the capacity to live as well as one may in ways that are appropriate for rational and conscientious beings. The student on this programme is therefore encouraged to appreciate in a significant sense what it means to be a philosopher (a ‘lover of wisdom’) and how living the ‘philosophic life’ contributes to one’s well-being and to the development of one’s humanity.

ancient philosophy, related to the possibility of extraterrestrial life
The idea that there might be other inhabited worlds dates back thousands of years and has roots in both Eastern and Western thought. Doubtless it first took the form of beliefs in gods, goddesses, and other spiritual beings which inhabited realms beyond the Earth. On a more intellectual level, Buddhism taught pluralism , as did some of the schools of Greek philosophy. Of the latter, atomism, as developed and propagated notably by Leucippus Democritus Epicurus , and Lucretius , is the most significant because the concept of multiple worlds and life is implicit in its cosmological scenario. Prominent among other ancient philosophers who speculated about the possibility (or impossibility) of other worlds and life, or who made discoveries relevant to these subjects, were Thales of Miletus Anaximander of Miletus Anaximenes of Lampsacus Xenophanes ... Ptolemy , and Lucian of Samosata . See medieval philosophy, related to the possibility of extraterrestrial life

What Is Ancient Philosophy?
What Christianity Did to Philosophy
What Is Ancient Philosophy? By Pierre Hadot. Translated by Michael Chase. Harvard University Press. 362 pp. $29.95. Reviewed by Benjamin Balint According to Pierre Hadot, a prominent historian of ancient thought and professor emeritus at the CollËge de France, philosophy today—specialized, professional, and detached from life—is but a shadow of its glorious Athenian past. But that is not the original part of his thesis. A wide array of modern minds have thought the same: Hegel lamented that philosophy is no longer “practiced as a private art, as it was by the Greeks,” Heidegger called for a return to the Greek grammar of being, and Kant claimed that “the ancient Greek philosophers remained more faithful to the Idea of the philosopher than their modern counterparts have done.” What is new in What Is Ancient Philosophy? is that its author confidently identifies Christianity as the agent of philosophy’s decline. In his latest book, first published in France in 1995, Hadot surveys with care the great schools of classical thought—Platonism, Aristotelianism>, Cynicism, Epicureanism, Stoicism, and Skepticism—and argues that they share not only a drive to offer rational explanations of the world but also a conception of philosophy profoundly different from the way that discipline currently understands itself. As in his last book, Philosophy as a Way of Life , Hadot shows that unlike today, philosophers in the age of Plato’s Academy and Aristotle’s Lyceum

In this period the traditional Greek culture is changed by strong Eastern, especially Persian, influences.

The philosophy of the era now known as the Middle Ages (the period roughly extending from the fall of the Roman Empire to the Renaissance) is a widely varied period in the history of philosophical thought. However, one defining feature which distinguishes this period, in the western world, is the degree to which competing or contradictory philosophical views and systems were brought into dialogue with each other.

    1. Theory of Knowledge in Ancient Philosophy
The following materials would be suitable for an intermediate or advanced course (for students who have had some experience reading and discussing philosophy, and who know some logic preferably, predicate calculus). The suggested readings contain enough to introduce several major themes in epistemology (some of which relate also to philosophy of science), and to introduce the student to the ways in which the ancient Greeks went about doing philosophy in one broad area of their major concerns. Some of the topics sketched below could also be introduced as modules into standard courses on theory of knowledge, partly to provide helpful formulations of contemporary problems, and partly to provide interesting alternatives to present day ways of conceptualizing the issues. A note on translations: Except where noted below, we recommend: Plato. Collected Dialogues . Hamilton and Cairns (eds.). Princeton. 1971. Aristotle. The Complete Works . Barnes (ed.). Princeton, 1984.

    Ancient Philosophy at Cambridge
Cambridge provides exceptional resources for postgraduate study in Ancient Philosophy and Ancient Science. Cambridge's Laurence Chair of Ancient Philosophy, originally created for F.M. Cornford in 1930, is the oldest Ancient Philosophy Professorship in the world. Its last four holders have been W.K.C. Guthrie, G.E.L. Owen, Myles Burnyeat, and Gisela Striker. The current Laurence Professor is David Sedley. Cambridge's range of expertise in ancient philosophy and science is so broad that virtually any research project in the field can be accommodated, in any period from Presocratic to Neoplatonist and Patristic philosophy. A wide variety of approaches and techniques may be pursued: analytic, historical, intercultural, philological, text-critical, papyrological, or interdisciplinary. The Faculty attracts numerous visiting scholars, some on extended stays of a year or more. Regular seminars are held to read Greek and Latin philosophical texts. The B Club, Cambridge's Ancient Philosophy society, holds open meetings three times a term to hear papers from invited speakers. Each May a five day colloquium is held, attracting many scholars from outside Cambridge.
