Peter Kingsley brings to light new evidence recently uncovered about ancient Pythagoreanism and its influence on Plato, and reconstructs the transmission of Pythagorean ideas from the Greek West down to the alchemists and magicians of Egypt, and from there into the Islamic world.

4th Tetralogy: Exploring Plato's Middle Dialogues
A virtual learning environment, based on the theory that 28 of Plato's dialogues can be divided into seven tetralogies which were carefully designed and arranged by Plato with a pedagogical agenda in mind; that of advancing the new disciple of philosophy from an intellectual adolescent to the mature and fully-formed philosopher-politician of the Republic.

    Ancient philosophy
The philosophy of the Greco-Roman world from the sixth century bc to the sixth century ad laid the foundations for all subsequent Western philosophy. Its greatest figures are Socrates (fifth century bc ) and Plato and Aristotle (fourth century bc ). But the enormously diverse range of further important thinkers who populated the period includes the Presocratics and Sophists of the sixth and fifth centuries bc ; the Stoics, Epicureans and sceptics of the Hellenistic age; and the many Aristotelian and (especially) Platonist philosophers who wrote under the Roman Empire, including the great Neoplatonist Plotinus. Ancient philosophy was principally pagan, and was finally eclipsed by Christianity in the sixth century ad , but it was so comprehensively annexed by its conqueror that it came, through Christianity, to dominate medieval and Renaissance philosophy. This eventual symbiosis between ancient philosophy and Christianity may reflect the fact that philosophical creeds in late antiquity fulfilled much the same role as religious movements, with which they shared many of their aims and practices. Only a small fraction of ancient philosophical writings have come down to us intact. The remainder can be recovered, to a greater or lesser extent, by piecing together fragmentary evidence from sources which refer to them.

    S. Marc Cohen [faculty.washington.edu/ smcohen/arintro.htm] Philosophy Is Part of Daily Life If you think philosophy or, more specifically, ancient philosophy isn't for you, think again. You might be surprised at the number of borrowings from ancient philosophers you run across in daily life. From Protagoras we know that their are two sides to every question. From Diogenes Laertius we hear that appearances are deceitful. Lucretius wrote that nothing can be produced out of nothing. These are easy to understand, empirical bits of wisdom, seemingly different from that vast area of mysticism we call philosophy, but they are, nevertheless, philosophy. If we only had such limited chestnuts from Aristotle and Plato, the greatest masters of philosophy would probably be easier to know, but we don't. We have volumes discussing the meaning of life, reality, knowledge, the good, and much more.

    Intentionality in Ancient Greek Philosophy
But in fact this narrative rests on questionable assumptions. Once the investigation is properly framed, it is clear that philosophical interest in intentionality can be traced back to the very origins of ancient philosophy. Intentionality is treated as involving serious problems already in the early- to mid-fifth century B.C.E., arguably first by Parmenides of Elea, but indisputably by sophists such as Gorgias and Protagoras. Plato thematizes the difficulties and discusses them at length in several dialogues. In later philosophers, we find various theoretical solutions, including appeals to internal representations (Aristotle), to nonexistent objects of thought (early Stoics), and to propositions and other semantic entities (later Stoics). The terminology of intentionality itself can be traced back, through Augustine, to the Stoic theory of vision.

is the Greek word most often translated as knowledge, while and . As we move chronologically from Xenophon to Plotinus, we go from an author who does not distinguish between the two terms, to an author who has little use for because it is so far from reality. It is in Aristotle that we find the basis for something like the modern opposition between as pure theory and as practice. Yet even Aristotle refers to or craft as itself also that is informed by knowledge of forms. In the Republic this knowledge is the indispensable basis for the philosophers' craft of ruling in the city. Picking up another theme in Plato's dialogues, the Stoics develop the idea that virtue is a kind of or craft of life, one that is based on an understanding of the universe. The relation, then, between and in ancient philosophy offers an interesting contrast with our own notions about theory (pure knowledge) and (experience-based) practice. There is an intimate positive relationship between
