Welcome to our Ancient History Projects on the Web
Graphic based on a lithograph "Side View of the Great Sphinx,
Pyramids of Geezeh" by David Roberts Introduction: Grade Five and Six students from The International School of Amsterdam have worked on several investigative projects in 1996-97 and 1997-98. In Spring 1997 grade six students spent a month studying Ancient Egypt . They worked in pairs or in threes studying different aspects: the geography, the history, religion, the social structure and daily life and technology. Following the Egyptian project, students chose another civilization they wanted to learn more about. The choices included the Romans Greeks Celts Vikings ... Incas , Aztecs, Chinese , Etruscans, Maoris , and North American Indians. The groups then made a presentation to their classmates using multi-media authoring tools and in August 1997 a number of their projects were added to our Grade 6 Social Studies Web Site with links to other Internet resources and related school projects.

The FBRT researches the life and works of Sir Francis Bacon (1561-1626), a great Initiate and secret Master, President of the Rosicrucians, first Grand Master of English Freemasonry, a philosopher, poet, judge and statesman, likened by his contemporaries to Socrates, Virgil and Nestor, referred to as both Solomon and Apollo, the Day-Star on high, Leader of the Choir of Muses, and foretold by Paracelsus as the remarkable being, Elias the Artist, who would renovate the arts and sciences and enable all things to become known. The path involves Ancient Wisdom and Philosophy, the Mysteries, Cabala, Hermeticism, Magia, Neoplatonism, Alchemy, Geomancy, Christian teachings, the Arts and Sciences, Physics and Metaphysics, Drama, Entertainment and the Shakespeare authorship mystery. The path stems from Enoch, the great Initiate and King of Atlantis, and moves on into the future, to a New Atlantis and the Golden Age of Enlightenment. 114. S.U. Deraniyagala
Profile, curriculum vitae and publications of this Directorgeneral of the Archaeological Department Sri Lanka. Current research projects include the ancient citadel of Anuradhapura (900 BC - 1200 AD).
http://www.deraniyagala.de/
The Prehistory of Sri Lanka: an Ecological Perspective , has been hailed by scholars as a landmark in the archaeology of South Asia as a whole, which has incidentally transformed their concept of Sri Lankan prehistory. The main thrust of this monumental work has been to combine up to date theoretical thinking on anthropology with its application, using Sri Lanka as a case study. This has involved an in-depth scrutiny and retrieval of data pertaining to chronology and the evolution of human subsistence and settlement practices, demography and technology, while touching on miscellaneous aspects such as physical anthropology and mortuary traits. All of these elements have been related to the human environment in South Asia during the last 700,000 years, based on a detailed appraisal of faunal, floral and sedimentological data. The result has been a treatise on cultural palaeo-ecology. Deraniyagala's research continues on the lines set out above as Director-General (1992-) of the Archaeological Department. At present his major research project is the sounding of the depths (10m below ground level) of the ancient citadel of Anuradhapura (900 BC - 1200 AD). This latter project constitutes stage II of the general research design and already its second sub-stage has been completed with the excavations conducted by a British team headed by F.R. Allchin of Cambridge University and R. Coningham from the University of Bradford with inputs from the British Museum and the Society of South Asian Studies. The results have succeeded in revolutionising existing concepts concerning the rise of civilisation in South Asia.

Ancient clay stamp seals and sealings of Sri Lanka
by Rajah M. Wickremesinghe The world's oldest clay stamp seal had been unearthed in 1990 in the ancient Mesopotamian city of Ur. This city was situated in Southern Iraq along the river Euphrates, below present day Baghdad. The seal is attributed to a king of the 1st dynasty of Babylon circa 2550 BC. Sarah Kielt has in her work expressed the opinion that the various types of seals discovered by archaeologists can be dated from as far back as 6000 BC particularly in the ancient civilisations of the Near East. Roger J. Mathews identifies such seals as stamp, cylinder, and tablet, the last named bearing a seal impression on both sides. A stamp seal could even have been attached to a ring and has only one impression impression as opposed to a cylinder seal which had multiple imprints on it. The latter were utilized by rolling them on to wet clay. Cylinder seals have an aperture running through the centre in its entire length, facilitating being rolled. They could also be worn round the owners neck to make it secure. It is accepted by archaeologists that cylinder seals had been invented in Southern Mesopotamia around 3500 BC. Seals provide important evidence similarly to coins, for the re-construction of ancient socio-economic history of a region. Many active trading and administrative centres of ancient civilisations have yielded seals and sealings of clay in very large numbers. This has enabled the uncovering of their hidden secrets.

LEGIO XX
THE IMPERIAL ROMAN TWENTIETH LEGION
BRINGING ANCIENT ROME TO LIFE
The Twentieth Legion was founded in 1991 to recreate the soldiers of the Roman Army for public demonstrations and living history displays. Our weapons, armor, and accoutrements are all carefully researched, and reconstructed at our own expense. Our troops demonstrate the tactics of the day, and the use of the legionary's various weapons. We can discuss many aspects of Roman army life, and will sometimes spend a day or weekend living like our ancient counterparts did on campaign. We also have a civilian contingent which displays daily life in the ancient Roman world. The group is based in the Washington, D.C. area but will accept Associate Members from anywhere in the world. More information about membership is available through the links below. Following our educational purpose, this website has been constructed mainly as an aid for people who want to make or purchase their own reproduction Roman clothing and military equipment. Within you will find our Handbook for Legionaries and a Civilian Clothing guide, plus patterns, drawings, photographs, and extra "hints" for some items. History of China
China, representing one of the earliest civilizations in the world, has a recorded history of about 3,600 years. It possesses rich historical documents as well as ancient relics. Like other nations, China, in its development, passed through the stages of primitive society, slave society, and feudal society. During the middle decades of the 19th century, capitalist forces of foreign countries invaded China, and China was slowly transformed into a semi-colonial and semi-feudal society. The founding of the People's Republic in 1949 marked China's entry into the socialist stage. During the long period of historical development, the industrious, courageous, and intelligent Chinese people of all nationalities collectively created a great civilization. They made great contributions to all of mankind. The following is a list of the dynasties:

Flanked by the Devon Expressway, that extends the M.5 to the historic naval port of Plymouth, it is situated roughly half way between Plymouth and Exeter. Ashburton is not only a splendid gateway to Dartmoor, but is also the ideal base from which to explore the whole region from Moor to sea. The scenery in the area is glorious in all the weather's moods and offers visitors opportunities for walking, pony trekking, canoeing, fishing and - if you like - just pottering. There are a variety of good food outlets, whether for retail or dining purposes, with inns that are mellow and welcoming and the pace of life bids you gently to unwind. This ancient stannary town dates from Saxon times and has spread out from its centre along the courses of the little river Ashburn and its tributary, the Balland Stream.
