A Note From the Adminstrator
Over the past year, my workload doubled, and then trebled (and who knows what will happen next). It's been pretty tough, and this site is the one that suffered. I'm trying to clean up the problems and broken links first (especially the ones that turned into porn), and then will start adding in new links. The backlog is substantial, so this process will be scattered over the next few months. Browse the Categories Alternative Theories

All Things to All People? No. This site can not and does not index all resources relating to things ancient on the web. That would be impossible, as sites appear and disappear with astonishing rapidity. There is an astounding amount of information about some topics out there (not all of it accurate or useful), and next to nothing about others. Please bear that in mind as you use the sources you find on-line. Just because one person says something doesn't make it true (or accepted as true). The web - as wonderful as it is - is still no substitute for good, old fashioned research at your local library. Your librarians - typically underpaid, underappreciated, and undervalued - are trained to help you find the materials you need - and didn't know you needed. Use your libraries and thank your librarians.

The History of Gardening: A Timeline
From Ancient Times to 1600
35,000 BCE (BCE = Before the Common Era or Christian-Roman Era)
Evidence from archeological sites (tools, corprolites) indicates that Homo Sapiens at the end of the Paleolithic period
had knowledge of many plants dervied from food gathering techniques. Different kids of fruits, nuts, and roots were
only gathered , not cultivated. 15,000 BCE
"The history of the origin of human civilizations and agriculture is, of course, much older than the documentation in the form of pyramids, inscriptions and bas-reliefs or tombs can tell us. A close acquaintance with cultivated plants and with the multitude of types and their differentiation into geographical groups as well as their frequently sharp physiological isolation from each other compel us to refer the very origin of cultivated plants to such remote epochs, where periods of 5-10,000 years such as concern archeologists represent but a brief moment."

Ancient History One of the great civilizations in the world during the 4th and 3d millennium BC was the Minoan culture of Crete . The Minoan culture is divided in three periods: old, middle and late. The old period was synchronized with the Old Kingdom of Egypt. There were connections between the two cultures through trade, and these influences can be found in the art in both Crete and Egypt. During the middle period, about 1900 BC , the great palaces of Knossos and Phaestos were built. There are debates whether these buildings were housing kings or priests, but it is thought there was a religious association to them. The Great Goddess, perhaps called Rhea was worshipped, and her priests and priestesses had the highest position in the society. During the second millennium BC a series of natural catastrophies plagued the Minoan civilization. At 1700 BC there was a terrible earthquake that destroyed the old palaces, and a second one occurred at about 1450 BC destroying most of the buildings of that time. The Volcano at

    The ML1 macro processor
ML/I is an ancient (and very good) general purpose macro processor. Originally written in DEC PDP7 assembly language by Peter J. Brown ML/I was widely ported in the 1970's, but is now all but forgotten. It deserves to be more widely known, because:
  • It is a historically significant advance in macro-processing, and in code portability.
  • It is still one of the most advanced macro-processors in existence. It is much superior to M4; it can be a useful alternative to other text processing tools such as awk or perl, especially when constructions that span more than one line or nested constructions need to be recognized, or comments and strings need to be processed. It is an ideal pre-processor for text formats such as HTML or XML.
  • It is an example of how much can be done with very little computer resources. The original implementation had a code size of 3000 18-bit words. It could do quite significant work on a 4096 word machine.
  • Its documentation is outstanding in its clarity, precision and usefulness. Instead of making something which is actually simple appear to be incredibly complex (like much that passes for advanced technology today,) it makes something quite complex, appear to be incredibly simple.
