Science IMPORTANT New Structure for the Ancient History Sourcebook Since January 24 1999, the Internet Ancient History Sourcebook has been completely reorganized. Each of the main sections had became too large to maintain as one file. To see the new arrangement go to the Main Index The three older index files were called Ancient Near East Greece Rome (asbook3.html). All remained available until October 2000, but have now been removed. Too many links had gone bad, and as such the pages generated too many complaints about bad links, even though there was indication that they were no longer being updated and updated linkes were available within the new structure. For all texts it is now necessary to use the new structure. SECTIONS Subjects covered by the source texts in each Section. Studying Ancient History

RESOURCES
The University of Pennsylvania has a superb array of resources for the student of ancient history. The University Libraries include Van Pelt Library which houses seminar collections in Classical Studies, Philosophy, and Asian Studies and the Henry C. Lea Library of Byzantine and Medieval History. Students may also use the Rare Book Collection, the Furness Fine Arts Library and the University Museum Library, which has extensive holdings in Mediterranean and Near Eastern archaeology. The University Museum also has an outstanding collection of artifacts from each of the major civilizations of the ancient world. Students at Penn can participate in excavations and research projects in Italy, Greece and the Near East, as a result of the University's affiliation with research institutions in these areas. Penn enjoys close relations with other distinguished educational institutions including Princeton and Bryn Mawr. Faculty at neighboring institutions are sometimes invited to teach at Penn, and are often available for informal consultation with Penn students. By means of reciprocal agreement, graduate courses at these institutions are available to students in the Ancient History Graduate Group at Penn.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Students in the Graduate Group in Ancient History are eligible for four-year William Penn Fellowships. This award covers full tuition and pays a generous stipend. Additional Teaching Assistantships and Teaching assignments in the College of General Studies are also available. Students in the Group are regularly successful in the competition for Dissertation Fellowships.

Cato Policy Analysis No. 159 August 16, 1991
"Ancient History": U.S. Conduct in the Middle East
Since World War Il and the Folly Of Intervention
by Sheldon L. Richman Sheldon L. Richman is senior editor at the Cato Institute. Executive Summary When Iranian revolutionaries entered the U.S. embassy in Tehran in 1979 and seized 52 Americans, President Jimmy Carter dismissed reminders of America's long intervention in Iran as "ancient history." Carter's point was not merely that previous U.S. policy could not excuse the hostage taking. His adjective also implied that there was nothing of value to be learned from that history. In his view, dredging up old matters was more than unhelpful; it was also dangerous, presumably because it could only serve the interests of America's adversaries. Thus, to raise historical issues was at least unpatriotic and maybe worse.(1) As the United States finds itself in the aftermath of another crisis in the Middle East, it is worth the risk of opprobrium to ask why there should be hostility toward America in that region. Some insight can be gained by surveying official U.S. conduct in the Middle East since the end of World War II. Acknowledged herein is a fundamental, yet deplorably overlooked, distinction between understanding and excusing. The purpose of this survey is not to pardon acts of violence against innocent people but to understand the reasons that drive people to violent political acts.(2) The stubborn and often self-serving notion that the historical record is irrelevant because political violence is inexcusable ensures that Americans will be caught in crises in the Middle East and elsewhere for many years to come.
