The Mare
The Stallion
Introduction
Horses traditionally have the lowest reproductive efficiency of all species of domestic livestock. National foaling rates are commonly between 50 to 60 percent of the mares bred. There is probably no one specific cause for these low rates. The arbitrary January 1 birthday, causing people to attempt to breed mares during low fertility months, incorrect heat detection of the mare, bacterial infections and low or non-existent culling rates of low fertility mares probably all attribute to the nationally low reproductive rate of mares. Poor, incomplete record keeping also has contributed to low foaling rates. Some knowledge of the reproductive physiologies of the mare and stallion is necessary to achieve success at breeding mares. This is true whether you are a breeding farm manager overseeing the breeding of 300 mares and 20 stallions or the owner of one broodmare that you foal out and send away to be mated.
The Mare
Some of the important aspects of reproduction in the mare include:
Puberty Age (Months) Type of Estrus Estrous Cycle Interval (Days) Seasonally Polyestrous Estrus (Heat) Length or Duration (Days) Time of Ovulation Before the End of Estrus Average Length of Gestation (Days) Time of Foal Heat After Foaling (Days)
All of the values given above are averages. Early in the breeding season it is not uncommon for a mare to be in heat for 30 to 40 days without ovulating. This is generally a normal situation you may encounter. It is also not unusual for a mare to have a gestation period longer than 360 days.

Why have a web page on foreskin anatomy?
Education
A surprising number of people in the US have never seen an intact penis. They have no idea what a foreskin is, what it does, what it looks like, or what it's good for. This is especially true for the older generations since the circumcision rate in the US was once as high as 95%. It is now dropped to 60% for the US as a whole and 30% in the western states. In most other western countries, the infant circumcision rate is near zero. Many doctors in the US have no idea what a foreskin does or what it is good for. These doctors know only about the " problems " guys can have with their foreskins and know of no solutions other than circumcision. No anatomy textbook that I've ever seen has an accurate diagram of what the foreskin is or how it works, although I havn't looked lately (if there is one, I'd like to know). The following pictures are intended show a lot more. Preventing Circumcision
I hope that once people are educated about the male anatomy, they will stop circumcising their male infants.

70. Auditory System: Physiology Tour
A tutorial on the anatomy and physiology of where and how sound is processed in the brain.
http://serous.med.buffalo.edu/hearing
The Auditory Central Nervous System the system The human auditory system provides us with vast amounts of information about the world around us. Our auditory system allows us to make pitch and tone judgments . These are essential to appreciation of music and contribute to our understanding speech. In physics terms, pitch tells us about the frequency of sound. Our ears (or more accurately our ears and brains) also allow us to locate the source of a sound. To perform this localization function, the brain combines timing (or more specifically delay or phase) and amplitude information from the sound with information from our other senses. This web site is about how our brains process the relatively simple information given to it by the cochlea into conscious and unconscious perceptions of the world around us.
the site This site was built as part of a neurophysiology course. It was designed to provide an overview of the pathways traveled by auditory information through the central nervous system. It is intended primarily for pre-med and medical students, but I have attempted to make it as accessible as possible. In general the site is organized into sections based on the major anatomical structures in the auditory pathway. From there the reader can delve as deep as they feel comfortable into the physiology and connectivity of any particular structure. I have tried to take advantage of the non-linear nature of web browsing by providing links for the reader to jump to related material in other sections.

Eye Anatomy
A guide to the many parts of the human eye and how they function. The ability to see is dependent on the actions of several structures in and around the eyeball. The graphic below lists many of the essential components of the eye's optical system. Click a term for more information Illustration by Mark Erickson Illustration by Mark Erickson When you look at an object, light rays are reflected from the object to the cornea , which is where the miracle begins. The light rays are bent, refracted and focused by the cornea, lens , and vitreous . The lens' job is to make sure the rays come to a sharp focus on the retina . The resulting image on the retina is upside-down. Here at the retina, the light rays are converted to electrical impulses which are then transmitted through the optic nerve , to the brain, where the image is translated and perceived in an upright position!

Anatomy
Please remain calm while all these images load... B M olecular biology, which spans biophysics and biochemistry , has made the most fundamental contributions to modern biology. Much is now known about the structure and action of nucleic acids and protein , the key molecules of all living matter. The discovery of the mechanism of heredity was a major breakthrough in modern science. Another important advance was in understanding how molecules conduct metabolism, that is, how they process the energy needed to sustain life. C ellular biology is closely linked with molecular biology. To understand the functions of the cell the basic structural unit of living matter cell biologists study its components on the molecular level. Organismal biology, in turn, is related to cellular biology, because the life functions of multicellular organisms are governed by the activities and interactions of their cellular components. The study of organisms includes their growth and development (developmental biology) and how they function (physiology). Particularly important are investigations of the brain and nervous system (neurophysiology) and animal behaviour (ethology). P opulation biology became firmly established as a major subdivision of biological studies in the 1970s. Central to this field is evolutionary biology, in which the contributions of Charles Darwin have been fully appreciated after a long period of neglect. Population genetics, the study of gene changes in populations, and ecology, the study of populations in their natural habitats, have been established subject areas since the 1930s.
