Roller Coaster For many people, there is only one reason to go to an amusement park: the roller coaster. Some people call it the "scream machine," with good reason. The history of this ride reflects a constant search for greater and more death-defying thrills. How does a roller coaster work?
What you may not realize as you're cruising down the track at 60 miles an hour is that the coaster has no engine. The car is pulled to the top of the first hill at the beginning of the ride, but after that the coaster must complete the ride on its own. You aren't being propelled around the track by a motor or pulled by a hitch. The conversion of potential energy to kinetic energy is what drives the roller coaster, and all of the kinetic energy you need for the ride is present once the coaster descends the first hill.. Once you're underway, different types of wheels help keep the ride smooth. Running wheels guide the coaster on the track. Friction wheels control lateral motion (movement to either side of the track). A final set of wheels keeps the coaster on the track even if it's inverted. Compressed air brakes stop the car as the ride ends.

Summer's (nearly) here and the time is right...for surfing (and dancing in the streets). In Wisconsin Dells, however, anytime of the year will be right for surfing now that the Kalahari Indoor Waterpark opened the FlowRider. Pumping out a steady ocean-like wave which allows surfers and boogie boarders to ride and perform stunts, FlowRiders have been big hits at a number of outdoor water parks such as Schlitterbahn in Texas. Adding to its impressive collection of attractions typically found at outdoor water parks, the Kalahari is the first indoor water park in the nation to introduce a FlowRider. While its indoor water fun gets most of the attention, the Kalahari Resort has a substantial outdoor water park as well. And with the recent addition of the Luapula Lazy River, it just got more substantial.

near Disneyland We stayed at this hotel for a total of seven nights. I could have stayed forever! It was absolutely beautiful. The grounds lit up at night, the rooms were incredibly nice and very clean. Everything you could ask for is right there in your room. The staff, unbeatable! If your thinking of staying at one of "main gate" hotels keep this one in mind. You won’t be sorry. Very affordable prices they do offer park hoppers and free tram. About a seven minute walk to the main gate of the theme parks.

Office of Information and Public Affairs Washington, DC 20207 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 7, 1977 Release # 77-098
Urgent Warning Issued On "Zipper" Amusement Park Ride
WASHINGION, D.C. (Sept. 7) The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) today issued an urgent warning advising consumers to avoid riding on the "Zipper" amusement ride. Four deaths and two serious injuries have resulted when the door of the "Zipper" car opened in mid-air causing the victims to fall to the ground. The Commission has authorized its staff to file a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia seeking an injunction to prohibit further use of these rides until they are fixed. State and local authorities as well as the owner operators of these rides have been notified by the Commission as to the extreme danger these rides present to the public. From 1968 to the present, 93 "Zipper" rides were manufactured and sold by Chance Manufacturing Company, Inc., Wichita, Kansas. There are known to be 80 of these rides In use in the U.S. and Puerto Rico with over half of these as traveling units that are installed at fairs and carnivals. The remaining thirteen rides are outside the country. It is estimated that 1,000 persons per day ride each "Zipper" during the summer carnival season. The "Zipper" consists of a boom with twelve cars attached. Each car can seat two adults or three children. While the boom rotates all twelve cars simultaneously, each car individually rotates. The doors of the cars are hinged on one side. The lap bars are attached to the doors. When the doors are closed the padded lap bar comes down across the laps of the riders. When the doors are opened, the lap bar swings away from the rider eliminating any protective barrier and making it possible for the rider to fall out of the car.

1. The Atomic Amusement Park Ride
In a section on noble gas shells, the Conceptual Physical Science text introduces a nice analogy between a school bus and an atom. The idea is to think of electrons in an atom ordering themselves in a manner similar to children taking seats on a school bus. There are seats in the bus for the children and there are "shells" in the atom for electrons. The idea of shells helps us keep track of the different states that electrons are in, but remember that the regions that the electrons occupy in space don't all look like spherical shells.
I'm going to modify the analogy and change the bus to an amusement park ride. There are still seats on the ride and only two people (electrons) can sit in any particular seat. But this ride is rather interesting because different seats do different things and at different speeds! The ride has different levels (shells) of seating, some of which are closer and some farther from the center of the ride (the nucleus).
Level 1: The set closest to the center only has one two-electron seat. This seat goes in and out from the nucleus in different directions. This seat is for the people who don't want to spend much on the ride or for those who don't like to whirl around on rides.
Level 2: The second set of seats costs a bit more, but the ride is a bit more interesting. There are four two-electron seats in this set: one seat that goes in and out as before, but it goes farther out and travels faster at times, and three seats that go around the center, each at a different orientation or angle, sort of like three merry-go-rounds or Ferris wheels.
