Amusement Park Physics Since the early 1900's and the construction of the park at Coney Island, we have been fascinated with amusement park rides. We love to feel the rush of going up and down on a roller coaster. Or feel our bodies being pushed to the wall in the tea cups or tilt-o-whirl. Or even experience total freefall on rides that drop us over 100 feet straight down. But have you ever wondered why we feel and experience the rush on these rides? Well, in case you haven't already guessed it, it's all about PHYSICS!! Select one of these pages below to learn more about how each of these concepts applies to our favorite rides. Study: Amusement park rides do not cause brain injuries
By MICHAEL RUBINKAM
ASSOCIATED PRESS PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Roller coaster enthusiasts can climb aboard without fear, according to researchers who say there is no evidence that even the fastest, tallest rides cause brain injuries. Roller coasters simply do not produce enough "head rotational acceleration" to cause either bleeding or swelling of the brain, according to researchers at the University of Pennsylvania who studied data from rides at three parks. "Looking at the absolute maximum head acceleration, we found that those numbers were nowhere near known thresholds for brain injuries," said Penn neuroscientist Dr. Douglas H. Smith, co-author of the study appearing in Wednesday's edition of the Journal of Neurotrauma. Other researchers, however, disputed the findings and said more work needs to be done. Politicians and consumer advocates have long questioned the safety of coasters, citing more than a dozen reports of brain injuries since 1979, most of them since 1990. One elderly patient died. The reports have led to state and federal legislation. On Oct. 1, New Jersey became the first state to limit the gravitational forces, or G-forces, of amusement-park rides. And U.S. Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass., has proposed legislation that would subject roller coasters to federal oversight.

There are the perennial favorites, like the Tilt-a-Whirl and the bumper cars. For the more adventurous, there are roller coasters where you can test your endurance for thrills. Beware of eating too much cotton candy or soda pop before enjoying these!
There are mega-amusement parks that kids will travel miles to experience. Disneyland and Disneyworld have the market cornered for smaller kids and either Six Flags or Great America is the destination for teens looking for excitement.
When did amusement parks start? Around 1550 in Europe, they began with places called "Pleasure Gardens." At these pleasure palaces, you could hear music, play games for prizes and ride on the first staid amusement rides. In the 1700s, the Pleasure Gardens were largely closed down due to political pressure. However, one of the original parks is still in existence today. It is the Bakken, situated north of Copenhagen and is the world's oldest amusement park. Here are some views of great amusement park rides and some facts about the history of the rides.

Abstract
When one enters an amusement park, one walks into a world of physics. All the rides are governed by the laws and equations formulated by physicists over a course of hundreds of years. This project focuses on rides that use the phenomenon of free fall to gain the thrilling effects that riders get on such rides as the Skycoaster and the Free Fall. The questions raised are which laws govern the behavior of these rides, and how safe they really are.
To find the answers to these questions, one must indulge into the world of physics. The hypotheses, or expected results, are that kinematics and conservation of energy are the prominent factors influencing the motions of the rides, and that the degree of understanding of physics that the designers and builders have effects the safety of the rides.
Kinematics is a set of equations that show the changes an object undergoes between its initial and final positions, such as velocity, acceleration and displacement. The law of Conservation of Energy states that energy is neither gained nor lost, it is conserved. Although the kinetic energy (energy of motion) and potential energy (stored energy) may fluctuate, the total energy (PE + KE) remains the same.
An object that is in free fall is subject to only one force acting upon it. This is the force of gravity, which causes a constant acceleration towards the Earth's surface of 9.8 meters/second^2. Because gravity is the only force acting on objects in free fall, objects of all masses fall at the same rate. Rides such as the Skycoaster and the Free Fall use this behavior to give riders the enjoyment of feeling weightless for a period of time. In Amusement park rides, like in all other motion requiring energy on earth, energy is conserved.

Operation of Thrill Rides by Children
On April 23, 2004, Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-MA) announced the introduction of legislation to set a minimum age of 18 years for operators of amusement park rides in the United States. At least nine states, as well as the Walt Disney Corporation, already have adopted such a requirement. The Markey bill, titled the Amusement Park Ride Child Labor Act (HR 4190), would extend those protections to apply to all amusement park rides nationwide, not just to a few states or a few parks. “For the sake of both the young employees and the park patrons, who are disproportionately children themselves, the Department of Labor should recognize that operating roller coasters and thrill rides requires split-second judgments that, if mishandled, can injure both the operator

More Injuries On Amusement Park Rides
WASHINGTON According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) emergency room injuries from amusement park rides rose 87 percent over five years. Injuries at amusement parks that were serious enough to warrant emergency treatment rose from an estimated 2,400 in 1994 to 4,500 in 1998, Ann Brown, the commission's chairwoman, wrote in a recent letter to Rep. Edward Markey, D-Mass. In August alone there were four deaths from separate incidents in amusement park rides. These injuries and deaths may be the result of lax inspection and regulation of the amusement part industry. They certainly represent a heavy toll for victims who seek the excitement and recreation of the numerous amusement parks throughout the nation. In states like Florida amusement parks attract thousands of patrons daily with most taking at least one of the highly publicized thrill rides. The CPSC regulates so-called "mobile" rides that are hauled from carnival to carnival, but not rides at amusement parks and other permanent sites. To regulate rides at permanent sides, the commission would need at least a $5 million increase in its budget and additional staff, Brown said. Regulation of amusement parks is now left to state and local authorities. Brown said 14 states plus the District of Columbia do not have inspection programs.

Commission Files Complaints Following Fatal Accidents On Amusement Park Rides
WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 29) The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission late yesterday issued formal complaints involving amusement ride accidents at three major amusement parks located in Texas, California and Illinois. A two-count complaint was issued against the owner and the operator of the "Skyride" at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas in connection with a fatal accident which occurred on October 21, 1979. The second complaint was issued against the Marriott Corporation which owns and operates "Willard's Whizzer" roller coasters at its Great America amusement parks located in Santa Clara, California (near San Jose), and Gurnee, Illinois (north of Chicago). A fatal accident occurred on March 29, 1980, at the Great America park in Santa Clara. Both complaints charge that the corporations failed to report to CPSC in a timely fashion as is required by law potentially hazardous defects in the rides and previous accidents which have caused injuries to consumers. The law permits the Commission to seek civil penalties of as much as $500,000 from a company which fails to report to CPSC a defect that could create a substantial product hazard. The complaint against the State Fair of Texas also seeks correction of existing defects in the Skyride.
