Six Flags plans to open the SpongeBob ride at other parks that don't compete with Paramount Parks since Paramount opened its own version of the ride at its parks last year. This year, Paramount Parks, which owns five parks in North America, is looking to a movie hero from the 1980s, Crocodile Dundee, as inspiration for two water parks. Paul Hogan, the actor who played the Aussie outbacker, has signed on as a spokesman for the Australian-themed water parks called Boomerang Bay. The water parks have opened at Paramount's Great America in California and Paramount's Kings Island in Ohio. In a memo sent to all operators of amusement park rides and obtained by The Associated Press, the Department of Public Safety said it is suspending the operating permits on rides that use a T-bar lap restraint "pending technical evaluation, testing and possible redesign." "Due to the fatality over the weekend, we determined it would be a prudent public safety measure to inspect all similar restraints and their operation in Massachusetts," said Christine Cole, a department spokeswoman. Cole said the memo is not intended to alarm the industry or riders that the restraints are unsafe. "It could be a quick turnaround before the rides could operate again," she said. Cole said the state will likely issue a report on the accident by the end of this week.
