Memory loss may result from bilateral damage to the limbic system of the brain responsible for memory storage, processing, and recall. (Illustration by Electronic Illustrators Group).
Definition
Amnesia refers to the loss of memory. Memory loss may result from two-sided (bilateral) damage to parts of the brain vital for memory storage, processing, or recall (the limbic system, including the hippocampus in the medial temporal lobe).
Description
Amnesia can be a symptom of several neurodegenerative diseases; however, people whose primary symptom is memory loss (amnesiacs), typically remain lucid and retain their sense of self. They may even be aware that they suffer from a memory disorder. People who experience amnesia have been instrumental in helping brain researchers determine how the brain processes memory. Until the early 1970s, researchers viewed memory as a single entity. Memory of new experiences, motor skills, past events, and previous conditioning were grouped together in one system that relied on a specific area of the brain. If all memory were stored in the same way, it would be reasonable to deduce that damage to the specific brain area would cause complete memory loss. However, studies of amnesiacs counter that theory. Such research demonstrates that the brain has multiple systems for processing, storing, and drawing on memory.

What is amnesia? I FORGET. Amnesia is a primitive, self-preservation mechanism , which comes into play when man need to protect himself or herself from some form of severe emotional or physical trauma. Man, subconsciously, blocks out the pain of the emotional or physical trauma, by burying the event or events so deeply that he has no memory of them. In severe cases, the individual not only loses his or her memory of past, painful events, or periods of time, but also loses his or her identity. He or she believes that the events that led up to this memory loss, occurred to another individual, and assumes a new identity. Though he or she functions within societal boundaries, this individual lives only in the present, and has no recollection of the past. Recoveries, and recovery times, vary from person to person, and either occur instantaneously, or with the assistance of a psychiatric specialist. The amnesiac, fortunate enough to overcome this condition, however, has no memory of the events that transpired when he or she suffered the memory loss.

BatteryAmnesia is a utility for any PowerBook that uses a nickel-cadmium (NiCad) battery or Nickel-Hydride (NiMH) battery. Over time, these batteries are susceptible to a "memory effect", which can reduce their battery capacity. The memory effect can be cured by fully discharging the battery before recharging it. The Apple PowerBook manual recommends a method for discharging your battery, by running your PowerBook on battery power until it shuts down, manually dismissing the low battery warnings that periodically pop up. The big drawback with this technique is that you have to be present to dismiss the low battery warning dialogs when they come up. Also, the PowerBook software will put itself to sleep "softly" before it is completely discharged. BatteryAmnesia provides a safe, fast and automatic way to deep discharge your PowerBook's battery. BatteryAmnesia automatically bypasses the low battery warning dialogs, and prevents the "soft" sleep brought on by those dialogs. Instead, BatteryAmnesia will run your PowerBook's battery down until the "hard" hardware shutdown occurs, which is at a lower voltage. This provides a better discharge.

Most are traceable to brain injury related to physical trauma, disease, infection, drug and alcohol abuse, or reduced blood flow to the brain (vascular insufficiency). In Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome, for example, damage to the memory centers of the brain results from the use of alcohol or

Can you get amnesia from a blow to the head?
16-Apr-2004 Dear Cecil: After years and years (and years) of watching TV, I've begun to wonder: Can people really get amnesia from a bonk on the head? Can they get their memories back from another bonk on the head? What really causes amnesia and what things do you forget? Is there any way I can induce amnesia without a cranial accident of some sort? Zeb B., Biloxi, Mississippi Cecil replies: We need to clarify your question, Zeb. It's not whether you can get amnesia from a blow to the head (or, for that matter, from some purely psychological trauma). It's whether you can get Hollywood amnesia, defined for our purposes as forgetting all or part of your past with no impairment of your ability to deal with the here and nowfrom which condition, moreover, you can recover in time for the final reel. The brain being the mysterious organ that it is, I won't say that such things never happen. But they don't happen a whole hell of a lot. Amnesia following violent but nonpenetrating head trauma, known in the business as "closed-head injury," is common and reasonably well understood. Typically the victim suffers two types of memory defect:

Loss of Memory Contrary to the common forgetting normally occurring in our daily lives, there are some diseases and injuries in the brain that produce severe loss of memory, and may also interfere with the ability to learn. This inability is called amnesia. Factors that may cause total or partial loss of memory are: Chronic alcoholism Brain tumor Concussion Encephalitis Brain traumas may cause loss of memory manifested in two different ways: Retrograde amnesia . The person will remember things after the trauma, but will forget facts from that moment back to months or even years before. Anterograde amnesia . The events before the trauma might be remembered , but facts following the trauma will not be remembered. In severe cases, the person might be incapable of learning any new skill, as is the case of a patient who every time he met his physician he would greet him as if it was the first time. Global transitory amnesia . This is a form of amnesia that lasts a short period of time and involves the anterograde followed by the retrograde amnesia. This type of amnesia is caused by cerebral ischemia (temporary decrease of blood flow). Stress Car accidents Soccer Drugs Cold baths Sex Contd.

What is amnesia? Another severe type of memory disorder is called retrograde amnesia. Retrograde amnesia is also usually caused by brain injury or disease. In this condition, individuals have trouble remembering events in their life that occurred prior to the brain injury. These people do not lose all their memories. Usually, the memory loss is worst for events just before the injury; events from long ago are more likely to be safe. For example, if a man developed retrograde amnesia in middle age, he might have excellent memory for his childhood, nearly complete memories of young adulthood, and progressively less memory for the years leading up to his brain injury. There have been reports of persons with memory disorders being unable to remember that they are married, if the marriage took place shortly before the brain injury that caused the amnesia. Currently, there is no known way to restore memories which have been lost through retrograde amnesia. Usually, when a person has a brain injury resulting in a memory disorder, there is some degree of both anterograde and retrograde amnesia. Often, the anterograde amnesia is more severe and more difficult to deal with. For this reason, scientists and doctors often just use the word "amnesia" to refer to a general condition involving severe anterograde amnesia and some degree of retrograde amnesia.
