Willow Street, Pennsylvania
February 20, 2004 In a letter to Leslie Moonves, President of CBS, about the proposed reality show “Amish in the City”, an Amish leader wrote, “Our religion is very sacred and precious to us. We are very concerned and very much opposed to having the Amish used as subject material for any movie or television production…We consider this a serious infringement on our privacy. We plea that you give serious consideration to this matter and respect the Amish by discontinuing your plans to air this offensive and potentially misleading and denigrating TV series.” Should not that sincere message be enough to cause CBS and UPN to scuttle the proposed program? So far it is not. In my efforts to convey by telephone the concerns of the Amish, and many others, about the proposed show, I encountered gatekeepers who callously and condescendingly denied me access to the executives of CBS and UPN. That treatment and the public relations statement from the Executive VP of Public Relations for UPN, Joanna Lowry, convinced me that CBS does not wish to know of the anguish of a religious group that once more will be ridiculed. I tend to agree with those who think that the proposed reality series would likely be a boring disappointment. While the Amish have decided to limit and control their use of the technology and social practices that are available in our culture, they are not naïve and ignorant about all that is out there in the world. But whether the show would succeed or flop is not the point. The issues a responsible news and entertainment corporation should address include:

Los Angeles, CA 90036 Dear Sir, It was brought to our attention that you are proposing a TV Reality Series, “Amish and the City”, in which you are proposing to expose some Amish teenagers to television and other modern conveniences and film their reactions to exposure to the modern society. You are proposing to air this TV series later this summer. Our religion is very sacred and precious to us. We are very concerned and very much opposed to having the Amish used as subject material for any movie or television production. The Amish wish to live a quiet and peaceful life and do not appreciate the added attention and unwanted publicity this TV series will bring to the Amish Communities.

Congressmen, Amish Protest Unreality Series

By Lisa de Moraes
Saturday, February 21, 2004; Page C01 "Sex and the City" calls it quits tomorrow, just as things are getting really hot for "Amish in the City." And not in a good way. Yesterday morning, Rep. Joe Pitts (R-Pa.) staged a news conference on a farm in Lancaster County to blast UPN's plans for a reality series in which 16-year-old members of the Amish community leave their families to join non-Amish teenagers in a house in a city yet to be determined. Casting reps for UPN are scouring Amish communities for five teenagers willing to participate in the program, tentatively called "Amish in the City." Pitts also drafted a letter, signed by 50 other members of Congress, to CBS CEO Leslie Moonves, who also oversees UPN, and to Viacom President and CEO Mel Karmazin (Viacom owns both networks), suggesting that if UPN airs the program, they are bigots. And an Amish leader in Pennsylvania has sent a letter to Moonves imploring him to scrap the project. He has not yet received a response.

Are they the same as the Pennsylvania Dutch? The Amish are a religious group who live in settlements in 22 states and Ontario, Canada. The oldest group of Old Order Amish, about 16-18,000 people live in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The Amish stress humility, family and community, and separation from the world. Although Lancaster Amish are Pennsylvania Dutch, all Pennsylvania Dutch are not Amish. The Pennsylvania Dutch are natives of Central Pennsylvania, particularly Lancaster and its surrounding counties. Unlike the Amish, they are not all one religion. Instead, their common bond is a mainly German background (Pennsylvania Dutch is actually Pennsylvania Deutsch, or German). They also have Welsh, English, Scottish, Swiss, and French ancestry.
What is the history of the Amish?

A subset of groups of the larger Anabaptist movement. By the 1690s, Anabaptists had migrated from Switzerland into the Alsace region in present-day France. A quarrel between these Alsatian Anabaptists and those remaining in Switzerland erupted. Named for their founder, Jacob Ammann, the Alsatian "Amish" began holding communion twice a year rather than annually, incorporating foot-washing into the communion service. These innovative religious practices were contrary to the practices of those remaining in Switzerland. The biggest divisive issue, however, was the practice of what is called meidung or "shunning." Swiss Anabaptists excommunicated wayward members from communion and church but maintained social relationships. Ammann ordered his followers to shun even social relations or interaction with those banned from the church and religious services. This practice of shunning irrevocably split the Swiss Anabaptists and the Alsatians, now known as "Amish," in 1693. The first large group of Amish settlers to North America arrived in Philadelphia in 1737. This group settled in eastern Pennsylvania. Settlements were planted over the next century, and Amish now reside in rural areas across 20 states and the province of Ontario in Canada. The states with the largest Amish populations, accounting for more than 70%, are Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. More than two dozen branches, or divisions, of Amish have been identified by John Hostetler, Donald Kraybill, and other scholars. There are no Amish outside North America today.

Amish in Ashland O hio has the largest Old Order Amish (AH-mish) population. Two of which are located in Holmes and Geauga Counties. In Ashland a new settlment was formed out of Holmes and Wayne Counties. You can see Amish around Ashland shopping at Wal-mart or eating at McDonalds. Many stores have places for their horses to be tied-up. I do not know a lot about the Amish; however, I have had brief encounters with them. While I was working at McDonald's in my younger years ;) a young Amishman asked me if I would like to buy some strawberries. Many of the other times while driving, I have come upon their horse and buggies. In Ashland, you can view some of their homes on St Rt. 96. You can recognize Amish homes by their windmills they use for power, wooden signs by the road advertising goods for sale, plainness of their homes, and during the summertime clothes hanging out on the line drying in the sun. Children Children are expected to obey their parents without question. They are not given religious duties during childhood since they do not become a member until they are baptized at age 18. Many attend local one room schoolhouses where they learn reading, writing, and arithmetic. Some even attend public schools. Mid-teens enjoy "rumspringa" or running around. They go to singalongs on Sunday night, attend buggy rides, and parties. An interesting note is that on May 15, 1972 the Amish went to the Supreme Court. They fought for their right not to send their children to public schools. Before, the police went to Amish homes and forced the children to attend. The National Committee for Amish Religious Freedom, mostly made up of non-Amish, discussed and fought for the Amish.

Some say that John Kerry's Catholicism is a non-issue in this year's U.S. presidential election. "There is no real Catholic vote to speak of. The real split in American politics today is between those [of all faiths] who attend services frequently and those who go seldom or not at all." Polls of U.S. voters indicate that on many issues the distribution of Catholics across the political spectrum is similar to the distribution of all voters. However, some say that Bush has one advantage in that he's likely to find many of his supporters at church functions.

The first two such cases involved the Amish, whose religion requires them to lead a simple life of labor and worship in a tight-knit and self-reliant community largely insulated from the materialism and other distractions of modern life. Wisconsin v. Yoder held that a state compulsory attendance law, as applied to require Amish children to attend ninth and tenth grades of public schools in contravention of Amish religious beliefs, violated the Free Exercise Clause. The Court first determined that the beliefs of the Amish were indeed religiously based and of great antiquity.
