When visiting Pennsylvania to study the Amish you should go to BIRD IN HAND AND INTERCOURSE. These are the largest settlements of Old Order Amish in PA. These are people who are Anabaptists. An Anabaptist believes in adult baptism. Children are not baptised. They must be at least sixteen years of age, but most likely eighteen or older. The community wants the members to be sure they are willing to abide by the difficult rules of the Ordnung. Once a person is a member of the church they either keep the rules or risk shunning. Some rules...no radio, no TV, no worldly magazines or newspapers. Amish must stick to the prescribed form of dress for men and women. Their homes also must fit within the community. There is no electricity, but kitchens can look modern with the use of propane gas for the refrigerator. But forget the dishwasher. That is considered too modern. THE AMISH 1. Key personalities Menno Simons (1492-1559). A former Catholic priest who became an Anabaptist during the Reformation. He founded the conservative Anabaptist sect which came to be known as the Mennonites. Jacob Ammann. Swiss Mennonite leader of the late 17th century who founded the Mennonite sect known as the Amish. Moses M. Beachy (d. 1946). A bishop of the Amish church in Somerset County, PA who began in 1927 to lead some of the local congregations away from the rest of the church. His followers, the so-called Beachy Amish, now number more than 5,000. 2. Main trends The Amish are an Anabaptist sect which split away from the other Mennonites at the end of the 17th century. The founder of the sect was a Mennonite minister in Switzerland named Jacob Ammann. He strongly felt that certain transgressions, such as lying, justified excommunication from the church and that excommunication should involve social ostracism. He visited different Mennonite congregations throughout Switzerland and aggressively demanded that the leaders of each congregation state their views on these issues. In the end, his actions forced a schism among the Mennonites in Switzerland, Alsace, and southern Germany. Those Mennonites who adhered to Jacob Ammann's views came to be known as Amish Mennonites or simply as the Amish. Jacob Ammann eventually settled in Alsace, now part of France, where he found a considerable following. By 1727 members of the sect had begun to immigrate to America, as had other German Mennonites. The Amish are no longer a distinct religious denomination in Europe, where they were eventually reabsorbed into the larger community of Mennonites.

AMISH KIDS LIVE very simple lives. Most get their education in one-room schoolhouses and spend hours each day doing chores. Their religion shuns telephones, cars, and electricitythey live without televisions, radios, and movies. That all can change, however, when they turn 16 and enter a rite of passage called rumspringa ("running around"). The teens have more freedom and are allowed to date and hang out with friends. When the period of rumspringa is over, they must decide whether they want to officially join the Amish church. For television executives at UPN, rumspringa is more than just a religious ritual. It's the perfect setup for a reality show, tentatively titled Amish in the City. The executives want to put five Amish teens into a house with five "mainstream" teens during rumspringa. TV viewers would watch the Amish teens venture into the "outside" world. Then, in front of millions of viewers, the Amish teens would make one of the most important decisions of their lives: whether to keep their faith. The executives say the show will be a "fish out of water" hit similar to The Simple Life, in which rich girls Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie lived with an Arkansas farm family for a month.

A common question that arises when people are asked to donate their organs and tissues or those of their loved ones is: "Is my decision compatible with my religious beliefs?" A recent Gallup Survey found that less than 10 % were aware that their religion has laws and doctrines governing organ and tissue donation. Though answers may vary from one denomination to another, research has found that a majority of religions do support organ donation. The following are just a few of the findings: Locate the religious affiliation of your interest from the list below.
Organ and tissue donation is viewed as an act of neighborly love and charity by these denominations. They encourage all members to support donation as a way of helping others. AMISH
The Amish will consent to transplantation if they are certain that it is for the health and welfare of the transplant recipient. They would be reluctant to transplant their organs if the transplant outcome was considered questionable.
