About the Center
The Illinois Amish Interpretive Center
is the first museum in Illinois dedicated to the Old Order Amish culture. It traces the history of the Amish religion and provides a glimpse into the lives of Illinois Amish. The Center provides to the public a rich source of authentic, factual information about the Amish community in Illinois through exhibits of contemporary and historical objects and artifacts.
Visitors can view an eighteen-minute video on the Amish culture to help separate fact from myth about their culture. Exhibits include one of the oldest known Amish suits and a rare hundred-year-old buggy. After exploring items from the past, visitors can step into the present and view the inside of a typical Amish home. The History Wall portrays Amish beginnings in Europe, immigration to colonial America, and Old Order Amish life today.

Amish Religion
In the Amish society, living the way that God wants is their number one goal. The Amish people hold church services every other Sunday at a different house in their church district. A church district usually consists of twenty-five to thirty families and has normally one bishop, two preachers, and one deacon. The bishop is the spiritual head of the district. A church service is about three hours long. During the service, men sit in the front rows of benches, and women sit behind them. Each district has a set of benches that are hauled to designated areas for the next service. These benches have no backs to them. After the service, there is a meal and time for socializing.
Amish people are not members of the church at birth. The Amish believe that making the decision to belong to the church is each individuals choice. Usually the Amish, in their early twenties, make the decision to join. They must, however, do so before marriage. Eighty percent of Amish children grow up to join the church and choose to stay in the Amish community.
The Amish believe they are temporary visitors on earth, and their principle duty is to prepare for the next world. The Amish believe in eternal life, however, it may be spent in heaven or hell, depending on how a person leads their life on earth.

  • Brief History: The Amish people are descendants of the Anabaptist tradition from 16th century Europe. The Anabaptists eventually split into three groups: the Mennonites of Dutch and Prussian origin, the Hutterian Brethren of Austria, and the Swiss Brethren. The Amish were named after their founder Jakob Amman who decided to split off from the Swiss Brethren. The division did not occur due to differences in fundamental beliefs, but instead it was over conforming to certain norms of the tradition. The Amish people immigrated to Colonial America in the eighteenth century and were able to grow and develop their own tradition. (Hostetler, 1980: 25-36)

    Cannabis Religion
"Cannabis religion", wat would that be? you might ask... Well, for one, nothing new. Cannabis has been used in religious rituals by many cultures since the beginning of human kind. Cannabis, has been, and still is, a Holy plant in many cultures on all the continents that it grows on, and it grows in nearly every continent on our beautifull planet, and in nearly every country. Tradition in India maintains that the gods sent man the Hemp plant so that he might attain delight, courage, and have heightened sexual desires. When nectar or Amrita dropped down from heaven, Cannabis sprouted from it. Another story tells how, when the gods, helped by demons, churned the milk ocean to obtain Amrita, one of the resulting nectars was Cannabis. It was consecrated to Shiva and was [the godess] Indra’s favourite drink.
After the churning of the ocean, demons attempted to gain control of Amrita, but the gods were able to prevent this seizure, giving Cannabis the name Vijaya (“victory”) to commemorate their success. Ever since, this plant of the gods has been held in India to bestow supernatural powers on its users. Cannabis sativa played a major role in every religion in the Old World from the dawn of civilization until the Dark Ages when its sacramental use was prohibited by Emperor Theodosius of the Holy Roman Empire. Today multitudes are rediscovering the spiritual virtues of this most useful of all plants.

Amish Men at a Prayer Service Email me! Amish Religion The Amish religion is more than a religion, it is part of a way of life supported by the community. But what is this religion? I have written previous articles on the origins of the Amish religion. But what about today? Can you believe that people today would allow themselves to be subjugated by their religon and their community? Yet the Amish do this everyday of their lives. I remember growing Catholic how I thought the RC church was so restrictive. We went to confession on Saturday, Mass and communion on Sunday. We couldn't eat meat on Friday in those days either, and during Lent there were other restrictions. On Holy Days we had to go to church, even if we had school or work to go to. Imagine my surprise to study about a religion known as the Amish which was yards more strict than the Catholic religion. I was in a sociology class at Long Island University when the instructor told us about the movement of the Holy Spirit through the Amish churches. It sounded like a neat religion though I didn't understand all the dos and don'ts. I mean, women have a lot more don'ts than men. It is a patriachal society. That means the men are the bosses, and even above the men are the Bishops and Deacons of the church. They make the rules and the community must abide by them.

The parents refused to follow the law and removed their children from the public schools after the eighth grade and continued their education at home, emphasizing domestic and farming skills. According to them, any further education in the schools would present their children with too much exposure to the "evil world." The families argued that their religious freedom was being infringed upon, a claim which the Wisconsin Supreme Court accepted when it found in favor of the Amish parents. The state appealed the case to the Supreme Court.
