Meshekinoquah aka Little Turtle
c. 1752-1812, Chief of the Miami, born in a Miami village near present-day Fort Wayne, Ind. He was noted for his oratorical powers, military skill, and intelligence. He was a principal commander of the Native Americans in the defeat of Gen. Josiah Harmar on the Miami River in 1790 and of Gen. Arthur St. Clair on the Wabash River in 1791. After several attacks on the forces of Gen. Anthony Wayne, he counseled peace but was overruled. Consequently he was not in command at Fallen Timbers. He reluctantly signed the Treaty of Greenville (Ohio) in 1795, ceding a great part of Ohio to the whites, and he also signed several subsequent treaties. Later he refused to join Tecumseh's confederacy against the whites. He persuaded many of the Miami to turn to agriculture and appealed to the government to halt the liquor trade among his people. ME-SHE-KIN-O-QUAH or Chief Little Turtle was War Chief of the Miami Nation. He led the confederation of Indians that defeated General Arthur St. Clair, at Fort Recovery on November 3, 1791. His force inflicted the worst defeat ever suffered by the U.S. Army at the hands of Native Americans. St. Clair's army consisted of 1300 soldiers. In the battle, 602 were killed and about 300 wounded. The Indian force consisted of approximately 1000 warriors. Only 66 Indians were killed in this battle! It was the greatest defeat the Americans ever suffered at the hands of the Indians. Even worst than the loss suffered at the Battle of Little Big Horn or

30. LBHA Index
Offers information on the battle, the Army and Native american participants, and the Indian wars in the Plains.
http://www.lbha.org/
Welcome to the Little Big Horn Associates! The LBHA is pleased to bring together many sources of information regarding the study of George A. Custer, Native Americans, and the Indian Wars period of 1866 - 1890 with the concomitant clash of rival cultures across the Plains. This material is brought together from federal and state agencies, on-line historical databases, and electronic texts. The LBHA website is constructed to introduce newcomers to the people and the times of perhaps the most studied battle in U. S. military history and certainly one of the most controversial events in the history of the American West as well as providing a consolidated list of reference material for long time students.   Our purpose also includes providing a research site for the long time student of the fight as well. We do not present any one view of these events and the people involved. Visitors here are encouraged to "draw their own conclusions." The LBHA does not necessarily agree with any of the viewpoints contained in any of the referenced sites/locations/organizations listed below. Please consider joining the Associates and see the information at the below link.

[ Maps ] [ Return to American historical events page
On April 25, 1846, war between Mexico and the United States started with an attack by Mexican troops on an American army, under General Zachary Taylor. In less than a year and a half the war ended with an American victory. The Mexican war was very important in the history of the United States, for not only did it provide a training ground for many of the figures who played a major role in the soon-to-follow Civil War, but the war ended with the acquisition of huge new territories for the United States. Though often overshadowed in our histories by the Civil War, in 1846-47 the Mexican War captured the attention of the public, and this naturally led to a large demand for prints and maps showing the events and personages involved in the war. Following is a list of contemporary images of the Mexican-American war.

CREELMAN: "FATHER" OF HUMAN RIGHTS REPORTING

CREELMAN AT PORT ARTHUR
... HOME A CLASSIC CASE OF YELLOW Who would have guessed that pioneers in human rights reporting would have opened the door to create an American empire in Cuba and the Philippines? That is exactly what happened. In a "classic case of yellow." James Creelman , a major player, was a veteran of two yellow chains, the Pulitzer and the Hearst. "Yellow press" reporting of Spain's often brutal attempt to suppress the Cuban independence rebellion beginning in February 1895 helped turn the predominantly Protestant American public against what was seen as an autocratic, medieval, Catholic Spain. American correspondents were sensational, adventurous, biased, emotional. Yet yellow journalism was also a pioneering human rights "watchdog." It exposed the brutality of Spanish armies to the glare of world opinion.

Road To Pearl Harbor
The attack on the military forces of the U.S. at Pearl Harbor Hawaii did not just happen nor was it a quick reaction to initiatives instituted by President Roosevelt. The Japanese believed that they were being pushed into a corner by Roosevelt and felt that they must act to protect the Empire. Gordon Prange in 'At Dawn We Slept' describes pre-attack events in detail. The description of these events note the mistakes made on each side. July The Japanese Army invaded North China from Manchuria, eight years of combat with the Chinese began. December The gunboat USS Panay, while on routine duty in Chinese waters, was attacked by Japanese aircraft. We do not know if the attack was intentional or an accident but Roosevelt looked for ways to punish Japan . Nothing became of this incident because the Japanese government apologized, paid for all damages, and promised to protect American nationals. October With the continued German military rearmament program and European leadership capitulation at the Munich conference, President Roosevelt asked Congress for $500 Million to increase America's defence forces. This action was done because he believed that Germany was a threat to the U.S. The Japanese saw this build up as a direct threat to their Empire because, the U.S. was the only country in the Pacific which could impede their expansion. Join the Navy Poster February Japan continues its conquest of China by occupying Hainan Island of the Southern coast. This occupation improved Japans ability to interdict maritime trade routes.

Sherman soon realized Hood was in fact heading toward Tennessee, leaving Georgia unprotected. With Grant's approval, Sherman returned to Atlanta, and in mid-November began the March to the Sea, moving away from Hood's Army. Seven days before Lincoln's reelection, the Confederate army crossed the Tennessee River at Florence, Alabama, heading toward Middle Tennessee.
