AMERICAN CULTURAL HISTORY
T he sixties were the age of youth, as 70 million children from the post-war baby boom became teenagers and young adults. The movement away from the conservative fifties continued and eventually resulted in revolutionary ways of thinking and real change in the cultural fabric of American life. No longer content to be images of the generation ahead of them, young people wanted change. The changes affected education, values, lifestyles, laws, and entertainment. Many of the revolutionary ideas which began in the sixties are continuing to evolve today. Metacrawler Yahoo INDEX T he purpose of this web and library guide is to help the user gain a broad understanding and appreciation for the culture and history of the 1960s. In a very small way, this is a bibliographic essay. While there is no way we can link to everything, we have attempted to find areas of special interest and to select information that we hold dear today - movies we watch, songs we sing, events that move us, people we admire.

BOB ABERNETHY,
anchor: Coming up, how the presidential contenders have handled the religion issue.
Professor STEVEN CARTER (Author, GOD'S NAME IN VAIN): That while candidates are talking about their faith, they're also being extraordinarily careful not to talk about the implication of their profession of faith for any particular issue of policy.
ABERNETHY: And how the next president's views might alter the Supreme Court.
Plus, Baptists in Texas send a defiant message to the National Southern Baptist Convention.
Dr. NANCY AMMERMAN (Hartford Seminary): There's nobody more independent than a Texas Baptist church.
ABERNETHY: Welcome. I'm Bob Abernethy. It's good to have you with us. BOB ABERNETHY: With still more violence in the Middle East this week, Pope John Paul II and other religious leaders renewed their appeals for peace. John Paul called on both Israelis and Palestinians to end their fighting and return to what he called a climate of dialogue. Here in the U.S., Jewish leaders called for a day of prayer and solidarity with Israel. In Washington, Muslims marched in solidarity with the Palestinian cause, denouncing what they called excessive violence by Israel. BOB ABERNETHY: On the eve of the election, religious groups are among those conducting last-minute voter mobilization efforts. Both New York's Archbishop Edward Egan and Washington's Cardinal James Hickey urged Catholics to give the abortion issue high priority in their vote. Focus on the Family called for Americans to fast and pray on November 5th in preparation for the election. The Christian Coalition claims it has distributed 70 million voter guides, including some five million guides in Spanish. Several interfaith groups have criticized those guides, calling them partisan. President Clinton and Vice President Gore sought votes at black churches. Their appearances prompted the group Americans United for Separation of Church and State to fire off a complaint to the IRS.

Introduction
The Biographical and Genealogical Master Index (BGMI)
Millions of Americans have been profiled in collective biography volumes such as Who's Who in America and Women of Science . The Biographical and Genealogical Master Index was begun in the 1970s to index these names to aid researchers. The text has been updated periodically since the first edition appeared in 1980, most recently in 1995. The index, compiled by Mirana C. Herbert and Barbara McNeil, concentrates heavily on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In addition to providing the individual's name, birth, and death dates (where available), the source document is included. Sources for this index vary from Who's Who of American Women and National Cyclopedia to American Biography to Directory of American Scholars and American Black Writers . In an attempt to protect the privacy of some individuals, the online version of the index does not include the names of living persons born after 1920. Source: . Published by: Gale Research Company.
