The Dominican of the NFL Siavii is latest in long line of exports from American Samoa By IVAN CARTER, The Kansas City Star You don't need to pore over hours of grainy game film to see how far Junior Siavii has come as a football player. To really understand Siavii's journey, look at a map, the kind you might find folded up inside a National Geographic. Briefly focus in on Kansas City, right there in the middle of the United States and allow your eyes to drift west, way past where Siavii developed into a man-child at the University of Oregon. Skim past California, and let your eyes drift out into the deep blue that is the Pacific Ocean until you stop at Hawaii. Now look down. Way down there. Notice how the “A” in “American Samoa” is actually bigger than the nation itself. That's how far Junior Siavii has come. When the Chiefs selected Siavii with the 36th overall pick in the April 24 NFL draft, they became the latest team to tap into American Samoa, a nation which has been labeled “The Dominican Republic of football” by some scouts. “You have to go over there to understand how seriously people take football,” said Siavii, who was born and raised in Pago Pago, American Samoa's capital city. “People get into fights over what happens in a high school game. It's serious.”

C., Samoa was "discovered" by European explorers in the 18th century. International rivalries in the latter half of the 19th century were settled by an 1899 treaty in which Germany and the US divided the Samoan archipelago. The US formally occupied its portion - a smaller group of eastern islands with the excellent harbor of Pago Pago - the following year. PART 6:
IN THE FIELD: Changing Images of Samoa Margaret Mead went to Samoa in 1925 to do her first field work on the island of Ta'u, one of the Manua group in American Samoa. This was the only field trip on which Mead was photographer, using the "box brownie" camera that had come into fashion. Mead wrote up this field trip in her 1928 best-seller, Coming of Age in Samoa , which included her photos, used sparingly for illustration. Twelve of Mead's photos were published in the first edition of Coming of Age, but omitted in subsequent editions and completely forgotten when the 2000 reissue was planned - it was based on later editions because of Mead's cumulative prefaces. Few of the classic's many thousand readers have seen these photographs, brought forward in recent presentations by Sharon Tiffany, comparing Mead's choice of images with popular contemporary ideas about Samoa. All photos by Margaret Mead; all captions from the first edition of "Coming of Age in Samoa"

Mapping and GIS Capacity Building in American Samoa
Proceedings of the 22nd Annual ESRI User Conference, San Diego, CA, Paper 101, 2002
This paper presents an overview of ongoing GIS initiatives on the island of Tutuila, American Samoa, as well as recent challenges encountered in building local GIS infrastructure for a "territory-wide GIS", including maintenance and update of GIS data layers, software, and action items for project initiatives. Reviewed also are the results of recent multibeam bathymetric surveys in 2001 and 2002, to obtain complete topographic coverage of several sites around Tutuila; and the integration of these and other baseline data into GIS to facilitate research directions and future management decisions within the Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

We the People... The Citizen and the Constitution by Robert S. Leming July 1996
"We the People... The Citizen and the Constitution" is a national civic education program that helps elementary and secondary students understand the history and principles of our constitutional government. In addition, the program helps students develop a reasoned commitment to values that are integral to sustaining a democratic society. The program focuses on the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights and fosters civic competence and responsibility among students in public and private schools. The program is administered nationally by the Center for Civic Education through a network of 435 congressional district coordinators and 50 state coordinators. The program also includes the District of Columbia, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. More than 20 million students and 70,000 teachers have been involved in the "We the People..." program.
The "We the People..." Curriculum. The "We the People..." curriculum was developed by the Center for Civic Education and is presently funded by the U.S. Department of Education through an act of Congress. The program began in 1987 under the auspices of the Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights. The curriculum was written in consultation with leading scholars and educators from throughout the United States.
