of Tutuila, the US Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the american SamoaEnvironmental Protection Thomas Giambelluca, UH Department of geography.
http://hi.water.usgs.gov/projects/samoa-et-web/
Estimating the amount of water that is transferred from the earth's surface to the atmosphere by evaporation or transpiration (collectively known as evapotranspiration ) is essential to quantifying the water resources of oceanic islands such as Tutuila , American Samoa. In the water budget of an oceanic island, where all freshwater (including water in streams and lakes as well as ground water) comes ultimately from precipitation , evapotranspiration reduces the amount of freshwater available for people, freshwater-dependent aquatic ecosystems, and maintaining the aesthetic qualities of natural freshwater bodies. To estimate evapotranspiration on the tropical South Pacific island of Tutuila, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the American Samoa Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), is operating a network of automated climate stations that collect data from which evapotranspiration can be computed by the Penman (1948) method. There are currently four operating stations, each of which consists of several instruments including sensors for climate and soil conditions, and an electronic data logger. Three of the four stations are mobile, that is a station is deployed at a selected site, operated for a year, then moved to a new site. This strategy allows many sites to be monitored with a few stations over the 5-year period of this study. To ensure that long-term variability can also be studied, one station (at the National Weather Station office at the Pago Pago Airport) will remain at one site for the duration of the study.
