It has some great descriptions of Samoan history and places of interest. I am worried though. I am worried that if ever go to Samoa I will not know how to properly act. The author of this travelogue time and time again warns the reader about Samoan cultural mores which should be followed. But I am afraid I will forget some of them and be a shameful traveler. The only book you'll need This book has everything you need to know when travelling to Samoa. Nothing is missed and you should be able to plan a long or short stay in Samoa. Everything is as described in the book and nothing is really out of date. The only problem is that some of the maps lack detail to be useful, however quality maps are available in Apia. Very thorough coverage This book is PACKED with information! It is also a really great size (smallish) to tuck in my travel bag and take along to be sure not to miss anything on my first trip to Samoa. :o)

STATEMENT OF P. DANIEL SMITH, SPECIAL ASSISTANT TO THE DIRECTOR, NATIONAL PARK SERVICE, BEFORE THE SENATE ENERGY AND NATURAL RESOURCES SUBCOMMITTE ON NATIONAL PARKS CONCERNING H.R. 1712, A BILL TO AUTHORIZE THE SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR TO MAKE MINOR ADJUSTMENTS TO THE BOUNDARY OF THE NATIONAL PARK OF AMERICAN SAMOA TO INCLUDE CERTAIN PORTIONS OF THE ISLANDS OF OFU AND OLOSEGA WITHIN THE PARK.
June 12, 2002
Mr. Chairman, thank you for the opportunity to present the Department of the Interior's views on H.R. 1712, a bill to authorize the Secretary of the Interior to make minor adjustments to the boundary of the National Park of American Samoa, to include certain lands of the islands of Ofu and Olosega within the park, and for other purposes. The House passed this legislation on March 19, 2002.
The Department does not oppose H.R. 1712. This legislation will provide authority for the Secretary of the Interior to adjust the boundary of the National Park of American Samoa to include up to approximately 1,000 acres of land on the island of Olosega, up to approximately 450 acres on the island of Ofu, and approximately 1,500 acres of ocean waters offshore of Olosega and Ofu. The lands on the island of Olosega and the adjacent offshore waters will add important cultural, biological and marine resources to the national park. The lands on the island of Ofu will ensure the long-term protection of important and fragile coral reef resources presently within the national park.
Proposed additions on Ofu contain excellent wildlife and coral reef habitats. Currently, only a strip of sand beach and the associated coral reef are within the national park boundary on Ofu. This coastal area contains a world-class coral reef area of remarkably high diversity and beauty. The proposed addition would protect the upland watershed so that the coral reef would not be impaired by non-park developments. Coastal areas on the north side of Ofu are proposed because of the exceptionally healthy and diverse coral communities found there, and because the north shores of Ofu and Olosega are connected and constitute a single coral reef ecosystem.

Contact us All About American Samoa American Samoa is a U.S. Territory, like Guam and Puerto Rico, but located in the South Pacific. ( See map. ) There are about 65,00 people living in our group of seven islands, but the vast majority of us reside on Tutuila, whose capital is Pago Pago. Over 90% of us are Samoan or part Samoan. Most of us speak both English and Samoan. We use U.S. currency, voltage and the U.S. Postal System. Due to the rugged and mountainous interior of Tutuila, most of us reside on its southern coast. Our main road, which also runs along the coast, is narrow and curvy and has a speed limit of only 25 mph! Although consumerism has managed to reach our shores and has certainly had an impact on our environment and culture, the latter has survived remarkably intact. The Fa’aSamoa (Samoan way) holds as its focus strong family ties that are strengthened through land and title ties, and through the fa’alavelave, an event which literally takes over the lives of its participants. This gathering of families which frequently occurs after a death, a marriage, a title ceremony, an opening of a new church, etc., includes gift exchanges, political displays of family clans and feasting that normally lasts 3 days to a week. Although consumerism has found its way into this traditional event i.e., bundles of bills are now found rolled up into fine mats (the traditional unit of exchange), and sodas are now served instead of coconut juice, the show of family pride, and generous spirit of this occasion remains the same.

Samoa Talofa Lava! - our special greeting from Samoa.
Samoa lies in the west South Pacific and comprises two main islands (which account for 96% of the land area), seven small islands (3 of which are inhabited), and islets and rocks, situated in the heart of the Polynesian triangle of the South Pacific. Hawaii lies to the north, Tahiti (French Polynesia) to the east, Niue and The Kingdom of Tonga to the south and the Cook Islands south south east. The particular attraction of Samoa is a charming combination of physical, historical and cultural factors: from clean and ‘eden-like’ surroundings everywhere you travel to a warmly accepting and friendly people, a unique Samoan culture that is so embedded into the fabric of Samoan society and psyche and setting it apart from other Polynesian island countries. The islands are volcanic in structure. The two main islands of Savaii and Upolu have rugged mountain ranges dotted with volcano craters and waterfalls, sloping fertile land to the coast, rolling miles of black lava fields and cliffs, pristine shores washed over by turquoise lagoon waters.and surrounded by a fringe of coral reefs and turquoise lagoons. The islands are often described as "The Gardens of Eden in the South Pacific"

American Samoa: Overview
Following the partition of the Samoan Islands in 1900, East Samoa fell under the jurisdiction of the American Ministry of the Navy. Since 1951, it has been administered by the US department of the Interior. In the 1960s, large sums of money from the USA flowed into the island state to finance the building of schools, streets, houses, two tuna fish processing plants and a hospital. Illiteracy declined and an excellent system of health care developed. At the same time, the rise in the standard of living to closer approximate that of the American mainland also caused the deterioration of native culture and customs. American Samoa has developed into a shopping paradise for the relatively poorer Western Samoans who cross over to the US islands to shop. Clothing is especially cheap. The people of American Samoa are so dependent on their higher standard of living that when given a chance for reunification with Western Samoa in 1966, they voted to remain a territory of the United States. Today, some 45,000 inhabitants live in American Samoa. Agriculture and the fishing industry have progressed to the point that they now supply local needs and produce a surplus for export. Nonetheless, many native inhabitants are dependent upon money from expatriate relatives, or from US government financial help.

The ocean is so blue, the sky is jealous. It's July, 95 degrees in the gloaming. The field is mud. The practice is nearly four hours long. The hitting is vicious. The United States is 6,000 miles away. This is football, Samoan style, which is to say it's nothing less than 21st-century village warfare. Welcome to the new fa'a Samoa the "Samoan way." That phrase still primarily denotes ancient customs and codes of conduct that govern traditional Samoan village life. But when American football was first introduced to the 26-square-mile South Pacific island of American Samoa three decades ago, it was like Henry Ford seeing his first automobile, Babe Ruth first taking hold of a baseball bat, Bill Gates scheming over his first line of computer code.

Introduction
Late in 1968 I went to Western Samoa to spend a year there photographing the people and their culture and doing anthropological research. My main residence was with a Samoan family I had met several years before. When I say "family," I use the term to mean something more than a nuclear family and something considerably less than an aiga or extended family. In fact, there were usually about 25 people in this living unit. They stayed primarily in one house in Leone, a rural, village-like setting on the outskirts of Apia, Western Samoa's capital. During that year, I ventured out and stayed in a number of other areas as well, including the island of Manono and Fa'a'la Village in Paulauli (Savai'i) and both Fasito'otai and Falealili on Upolu. After that year, I returned on other occasions to spend three months in the same areas, as well as six or seven times more to spend anywhere from a few days to a week or two. Whenever I stayed in Samoa, I usually kept my camera with me. I never knew what I might see and what photographic opportunities might appear, so I tried to remain ready. The photographs in this collection are a few of several thousand that I took.

Fine mats made from woven pandanus leaves have been used for centuries and they still hold a very special place in fa'a Samoa, the Samoan way of life. Lea'ala Elisara Pili, executive director of American Samoa Arts Council: "Our fine mats in the fa'a Samoan culture is one of the most valuable things in our culture. So once you present a fine mat, that's presenting the culture. That's why people of Samoa and American Samoa, I'm speaking for American Samoa only, are trying to take the fine mats to the USA so that people of Samoa, American Samoa heritage living over there still carry on the importance of the fine mat." In which context are they used?
