Culture
Despite political and economic differences over the last hundred years, American Samoa and independent Samoa share a closely related traditional culture. Samoan culture dates back to the arrival of the Polynesian people in about 800 BC. Although most Samoans these days are Christian, their adherence to traditional life ( fa'a Samoa ) exceeds that of all other Polynesian people. Religion is a big part of Samoan life and the Sunday service is the most important event in the week. Absolute fealty to the church pastor and strict observance of the religious rules is a must. Many visitors have suggested that Christianity has become 'Samoanised', and this observation is borne out in the complex code of traditional ethics and behaviour mixing with distinctly Christian practises. Samoan culture is steeped in a complex set of social hierachies, courtesies and customs that regulate all aspects of public and private life. Samoan culture is based on the fa'amatai system of government, with a matai, (

American Samoa Wants Moratorium On Tuna Vessels American Samoa, October 31, 01 The National Marine Fisheries Service should implement emergency regulations to stop new entry of U.S. longline vessels over 50 feet in length from fishing in American Samoa. This was recommended by the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council on Thursday in Honolulu.
Longline vessels which do not hold a longline permit and have not documented a catch prior to October 25, 2001, will not be able to fish in the U.S. Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) around American Samoa. This moratorium would remain in effect until a limited entry program is implemented. Henry Sesepasara, fisherman and advisor on American Samoa culture, emphasized the need for this action due to concerns about potential problems for the existing local longline fisheries, community and culture of American Samoa. Sesepasara noted that the American Samoa community eats a diverse range of seafood, and Samoan culture is critically dependant on a constant supply of fish. This demand has been met through the small boat fleet, but is now threatened by the rapid expansion of the large longline vessel fleet. The fishing effort increased from less than 500,000 hooks set during the first quarter of 2001, to over 1,700,000 hooks set during the third quarter. As the American Samoa EEZ is relatively small and surrounded on all sides by foreign EEZs, this expansion could deplete the local availability of tuna stocks.

Brief information of culture and history.

[ HOME ]
Fa'asamoa Fa'a Samoa, means the Samoan Way. This is an all encompassing concept that dictates how Samoans are meant to behave. It refers to the obligations that a Samoan owes their family, community and church and the individuals sense of Samoan identity. The concept of respect is also very important. You must always respect you betters, this includes those older than you, matais, ministers, politicians doctors and teachers. This unquestioning demand for respect is taking its toll in modern Samoa as the younger generation, which is invariably better educated than its predecessors, constantly finds itself trying to balance the demands of a conservative Samoan society with its knowledge of the world, increasingly gathered from overseas education and experience. This has lead to one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Fa'a Samoa is also evident in the legal system which is actually two seperate systems, a western style system administered by a police force and justice department, and a traditional system administered at a village level. The two systems do occaisionally come into conflict with one another but generally things work smoothly enough. As a visitor to Samoa you are likely to encounter a few aspects of faa'samoa. If you are staying in one of the larger hotels, you should have the opportunity to attend a

Fourteen degrees below the equator, it is the United States' southern-most territory. It is known as the heart of Polynesia. If you drew a triangle from Hawaii, New Zealand and Tahiti you would find Samoa in the middle. Western Samoa is a neighboring independent country that shares the same culture. American Samoa became an unorganized U.S. territory in 1900. The Samoas arguably represent the largest population of polynesian people and they take pride in a strong culture that has survived outside incursions amazingly well.

ROBERT SHAFFER Approximately 3,500 years before Columbus came to America, ancestors of the earliest Polynesians discovered a group of islands that would someday be known as Samoa. In the ensuing 2,000 years their descendants created and established Samoa's culture and way of life. The Centennial Edition of American Samoa 100 Years Under the United States Flag looks back at the century of American involvement in these islands. Dozens of Samoan cultural artifacts have been placed on these pages, illustrating particular aspects of traditional Samoan life. Many of these artifacts have never been presented before in color tableaux that give such a rich insight into the material wealth and culture of American Samoa. LOOK !!! The only American land below the equator, the territory of American Samoa consists of seven beautiful, tropical, volcanic islands and two coral atolls. It lies some 2,300 miles south, south-west of Honolulu and its nearest neighbour is Western Samoa a mere 25 minutes away by jet. Six of the islands are inhabited. Tutuila is the largest and has the most population. CAPITAL AND MAJOR CENTRES The capital Pago Pago sits on one of the most spectacularly beautiful harbours in the Pacific region. You can best admire its perfection from lofty Mount Alava.

THE PEOPLE The Samoans, who are of Polynesian extraction have lived here for more than 3,000 years. Their culture is rich in tradition and places great emphasis on the extended family. English is the language of business and most Samoans speak Samoan and English. HISTORY The first inhabitants migrated from the west possibly by way of Indonesia, Vanuatu, Fiji and Tonga to the eastern tip of Tutuila near the present village of Tutuila around 600 BC. NATURE In Fagatele Bay Marine sanctuary the steep volcanic slopes contain some of the rarest Paleo-tropical rainforest. Large fruit bats or flying fox patrol the jungles and huge seabirds can be seen nesting on the sheer cliffs and ridges. Some 34 species of bird life had been identified. Sixteen of which are unique to Samoa.

Paka o Amerika Samoa A third of our planet is Pacific Ocean. Away out in that undulating blueness, 2,600 miles south west of Hawaii, and 1,800 miles northeast of New Zealand appear the islands of Samoa. Anthropologists also view the Samoan Islands in terms of origins. Language links and artefacts suggest that the first distinctly Polynesian culture may have developed here some 3,000 years ago. Over the centuries that follow, seafarers in double-hulled sailing vessels stocked with pigs, dogs, and fruits spread that culture across much of the Pacific, colonizing points as distant as Hawaii, New Zealand and Easter Island. Pandanus leaves laid out to dry. Click on the above for a larger detailed map of Pago Pago harbour. The United States only parkland in the Southern hemisphere was created to protect three kinds of communities under pressure from modern forces. First is the paleo-tropical rain forest, where the flora and fauna stem mainly from southeast Asia, forming habitats unique within the US park system. Second, is the Indo-Pacific coral reef, markedly richer in species than reefs in other ocean regions. Third, bound to both rainforest and reef, is the indigenous Polynesian culture. The reef in the park along Ofu is a filigreed labyrinth of at least 64 different varieties of corals, from azure-tinged mushrooms to chartreuse vases. Boulder corals hundreds of years old bulge as big as whales. One type of staghorn coral resembles stalagmites rising from a tabletop.

American Samoa and its small group of islands were first settled by the Polynesians some 3,000 years ago. In 1722 they were discovered by Jacob Roggeveen, a Dutch explorer.
In 1900 it became an unorganized U.S. territory, and in fact, it's today the only U.S. territory located south of the Equator.
These rugged islands ( fringed by reefs ) have narrow coastal plains. All are volcanic in origin.
The beautiful city of Pago Pago ( the capital ), pronounced (pãng'ó pãng'ó) , has a magnificent harbor ringed by densely forested mountains. The outer islands are widely considered some of the most beautiful in the South Pacific.
While there is a strong American influence in the islands, American Samoans proudly retain their cultural heritage.
The local economy revolves around the long-established fishing industry, U.S. government jobs and the ever increasing tourism business.

The Samoan way of life, Fa'a Samoa, is unique in the Pacific and is a tradition that is proudly upheld by the people. It's a way of life that that binds the community together with important activities that include traditional ceremonies, oratory, singing, dancing, the telling of legends, the drinking of kava and the practice of tattooing.
It is not unusual for men and women alike to be heavily tattooed in traditional patterns with boar teeth needles dipped in soot-based ink. Tattoing is done from breast to knee, where it is not usually seen by the public.
With the missionary heritage still strong, Samoans dress modestly. While young women may opt for western clothing, most women will have their shoulders covered and wear long loose dresses or knee-length pieces of material worn as wraparound skirts known as lavalava. Men are usually more comfortable in lavalava at home, though trousers are common for work in town. Church clothes are very formal.
The special matai language, spoken only by selected people, is kept for oratory and ceremonial occasions and is considered an art.
