PRESIDENT BUSH ANNOUNCES NEH AMERICAN HISTORY INITIATIVE Washington, D.C. (Sept. 17, 2002) - President Bush today launched "We the People," an initiative by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to encourage the teaching, studying and understanding of American history and culture. "Studies have shown that Americans of all ages have a dangerously poor understanding of American history and culture," said NEH Chairman Bruce Cole, who joined the President for the Rose Garden ceremony announcing the "We the People" initiative. "The President has identified this lack of understanding as a serious problem and has asked NEH to help combat it." Cole added: "Last year's September 11 terrorist attack was designed to destroy not only thousands of people but also the American way of life. In defending our homeland we must fight to protect the democratic ideals and principles of freedom on which our nation was founded." The three components of "We the People" include:
  • A call for applications to NEH for projects designed to explore significant events and themes in our nation's history.
  • An annual "Heroes of History" lecture by a scholar on an individual whose heroism has helped to protect America.

William McKinley : (The American Presidents Series) > Customer Review #1: "Teddy" McKinley?

The previous reviewer is correct that Phillips has written an extended argument more than he has a traditional biography. But the argument is so cleverly advanced, and covers so much of McKinleys political life and presidency, that I found the book of compelling interest the best of the more than half-dozen biographies Ive read in this wonderful The American Presidents series so far. The core of Phillipss argument is that much of the credit given to Theodore Roosevelt properly belongs to his predecessor McKinley. In establishing a political realignment in 1896 based on both labor and urban-dweller votes, in greatly expanding Americas world role, and in beginning the reforms to tilt the balance of economic power from capital to labor, McKinley either preceded Roosevelt, setting the pace for the latters presidency, or outdid TR altogether.

Though many pre-Hoover collections now reside in the Library of Congress, others are split among other libraries, historical societies, and private collections. Sadly, many materials have been lost or deliberately destroyed. The Presidential Library system formally began in 1939, when President Franklin Roosevelt donated his personal and Presidential papers to the Federal Government. At the same time, Roosevelt pledged part of his estate at Hyde Park to the United States, and friends of the President formed a non-profit corporation to raise funds for the construction of the library and museum building. Roosevelt's decision stemmed from a firm belief that Presidential papers are an important part of the national heritage and should be accessible to the public. He asked the National Archives to take custody of his papers and other historical materials and to administer his library. At the dedication of his library on June 30, 1941, Franklin Roosevelt observed:

John Quincy Adams: (The American Presidents Series) > Customer Review #1: John Who? Adams

John Quincy Adams was the sixth President of the United States, but much less well known than his father John Adams, the second President of the USA. In this splendid biography, Robert Remini has provided us with a concise volume detailing the life of John Quincy Adams. Within this book, it is easily seen why JQA is rated as "below average" as a President, but highly regarded as an international diplomat. Remini has done a spectactular job in describing the whole life of John Quincy Adams, and helps us to understand why Adams life is being reclassified as more successful than previously recognized, despite the fact that his Presidency was a failure.
