Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson in pdf format The Modern American Presidency is a lively, interpretive synthesis of our twentieth-century leaders, filled with intriguing insights into how the presidency has evolved as America rose to prominence on the world stage. Gould traces the decline of the party system and the increasing importance of the media, resulting in the rise of the president as celebrity. He traces the growth of the White House staff and executive bureaucracy. And he shows us a succession of men who have increasingly known less and less about the presidency, observing that most would have had a better historical reputation if they had contented themselves with a single term.

by Gail Jarvis History is not like other sciences. Events can be interpreted differently by different historians. Versions of history contained in textbooks seem to change to accommodate current political trends. And, in some cases, historical facts are determined by a general consensus. This variable nature of history has always interested me, partly, I admit, because of my fondness for trivia. This article could be called trivia but I hope to use it in a way to give you food for thought. Let me set the stage by asking a question; "Who was the first president of the United States?" Before you answer I want to briefly describe one of the unusual, and often humorous, events that happened to me years ago when my business kept me on frequent out of town trips. One night I was seated at the bar in an upscale restaurant waiting for a table. Two distinguished looking gentlemen seated adjacent to me were engaged in a heated discussion, gesturing and raising their voices. Suddenly, the man beside me wheeled toward me and blurted; "Who was the first king of France?"

Libraries
  • Libraries themselves are an interesting concept. You have to bring in all your notes (or at least whatever is relevant to what you are working on today), which is often quite an inconvenience. And often the library you want is far away, and it may be years before your next visit. Computers and the Internet promise improvements in this setup:
  • Libraries with power points for laptops, so I can easily and all the time bring in everything I need.
  • Libraries with web terminals at desks where you can work with books, so I don't have to bring in anything at all, but can access my web notes direct from the library itself.
  • Ultimately, libraries publish everything on the Web, so we can research at home.
  • combined web catalog of UK libraries including TCD
  • combined web catalog (need Javascript) of Irish libraries including TCD

Woodrow Wilson 1913 - 1921: The American Presidents Series > Customer Review #1: Architect of the Modern Era?

No one can truly understand the issues of the modern era without knowledge of of the man who mid-wifed it into existence, Woodrow Wilson. In his biography of Wilsons presidency, Professor H.W. Brands brings his insightful style and keen sense of relationships between critical events. One learns enough from this rather short book to ask the next set of more interesting questions. Absent Wilson, would there have been a central bank, the Federal Reserve, in the U.S.? How did the Wilson presidency effect the direction of the national income tax? What did Wilson do to foster the growth of centralized federal power in the U.S.?

To the Best of My Ability: The American Presidents (revised) > Customer Review #1: A magnificent book about the American Presidents!

"To the Best of My Ability" is a wonderful new book about the American presidents. Published by the Society of American Historians, it has as its General Editor the distinguished Pulitzer Prize-winning historian James M. McPherson. "To the Best of My Ability" has similarities with other Presidential reference works Ive read, but it also has some particularly notable new features which I believe set it apart as the most outstanding work in its genre. The first 306 pages are devoted to short historical essays of each President and his administration . Each essay is written by a renowned Presidential scholar, biographer, or historian, and are without peer for writing quality and scholarship. The essays are lively, interesting, and offer a brief and completely objective appraisal of each Presidents time in the nations highest office.

The issues are contentious, and the participating departments are many. The domestic assignment is about the broadest in the White House, requiring the domestic policy head to reach out across thirteen of the fifteen cabinet departments plus the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Economic Policy The coordination of economic policy meaning both domestic and international economic matters is a challenge that has vexed presidents for several decades. Over the past twenty years, Presidents have created and used bureaucracies such as the Economic Policy Board, the Economic Policy Council, and the National Economic Council. At the same time, Presidents have relied on the advice of the Council of Economic Advisers, the Office of Management and Budget, and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. Listen up, Wesley Clark! Here's how generals get elected president.

History's best advice: Look like a dove Slate 's Michael Kinsley once described the early Al Gore as an old person's idea of a young person. Similarly, you might say that Gen. Wesley Clark is a peacenik's idea of a wartime candidate. It's easy to suspect that the groundswell of enthusiasm for his Democratic presidential campaign springs from the belief that he alone can risk a bold antiwar stand because his military stars would inoculate him from being Dukakis-ized. (In January, Slate 's Chris Suellentrop assessed Clark.) But to dismiss Clark's candidacy as a liberal delusion is to misread the appeal of generals as presidential candidates. The 12 generals (six of them notable) who have become president have typically won support by styling themselves not as candidates of war but as candidates of peace.

Portraits of the Presidents and First Ladies, 1789-Present
Thomas Woodrow Wilson was born on December 28, 1856, in Staunton, Virginia . The twenty-eighth president of the United States, Wilson served two consecutive terms in the White House , from 1913 to 1921. Before entering politics, Wilson taught at Bryn Mawr College and Wesleyan University, and later served as president of Princeton University . At Princeton, he earned a national reputation for his political addresses and articles, which contributed to his election as governor of New Jersey in 1910. Two years later, the Democratic National Convention nominated Wilson to run for president. On the day before Wilson's inauguration in March 1913, members of the Congressional Union, later known as the National Women's Party, organized a suffrage parade in Washington, D.C. to siphon attention away from inaugural events. It is said that when Wilson arrived in town, he found the streets empty of welcoming crowds and was told that everyone was on Pennsylvania Avenue watching the parade.

The decision involved much consideration before making it public, as well as enormous human efforts and expenditures to make what became Project Apollo a reality by 1969. Only the construction of the Panama Canal in modern peacetime and the Manhattan Project in war were comparable in scope. NASA's overall human spaceflight efforts were guided by Kennedy's speech; Projects Mercury (at least in its latter stages), Gemini, and Apollo were designed to execute Kennedy's goal. His goal was achieved on July 20, 1969, when Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong stepped off the Lunar Module's ladder and onto the Moon's surface.
