MISSION STATEMENT
Mission of WBU's Division of Languages and Literature
Th e Division of Languages and Literature plays a vital role in Wayland's liberal arts offerings by striving to stimulate in and out of the classroom a free and responsible exploration of truth (both actual and literary). English and foreign language professors understand and promote the values of education that offer students the opportunity to experience practical knowledge as well as a "knowledge worth possessing for what it is, and not merely for what it does." (Newman)
Our professors are more interested in what our students become than what they are when they arrive as freshmen. To that end, our students are guided in the improvement of their language skills and led to appreciate and understand literature as an outgrowth and interpretation of life.
The ability to read intelligently, think critically, write coherently (with a minimum of errors), and express ideas verbally in English and another language is at the heart of a liberal arts curriculum. Each of our traditional degree programs (B.A., B.S., B.M., B.B.A., and B.S.I.S.) requires a minimum of 12 semester hours in English, as follows:
  • ENGL 1301 Composition and Rhetoric
  • ENGL 1302 Composition and Reading
  • ENGL 2303 World Literature
  • and one of the following:
    • ENGL 2301 English Literature
    • ENGL 2302 American Literature
(SAT, ACT, and Advance Placement credit may be earned prior to enrolling.)

We've tried to maintain most of the original structure of the site, which models the way the humanities are organized for research and teaching as well as the way they are adapting to social, cultural, and technological changes. But some shifts in organization and navigation are necessary for technical reasons. ( Navigating and Bookmarking VoS Important : the new VoS is still a work in progress, but we have turned it on because it is already more functional than the original site. There are still some mis-orderings of categories and author names that we are fixing as we convert our legacy resources. We've also temporarily removed as many of the broken links as we could find and will restore them when we can (or find substitutes). Some categories have thus been temporarily decimated.
