Finding Books
Start your search broadly and narrow your search once you have identified the subject terms used by the WRLC Libraries Catalog. For example, typing "English literature" as a subject in the WRLC Libraries catalog shows the range of subject terms ALADIN uses to categorize books about English literature. In most cases, the broader subject of your topic is probably a subject heading recognized by the WRLC Libraries Catalog. Once you have identified what specific subject terms to use, you can narrow your search by combining that subject term with your topic using the Guided Keyword search.

    Online Catalog (the PAC)
The SDSU library provides an online catalog (the PAC ) for locating materials in its collection. Materials can be accessed in a variety of ways, including by title, author, subject, or keyword. The PAC can also tell you whether the library owns a periodical, but it doesn't index the individual articles in those periodicals. For information on how to access periodical articles, please see the section on periodical indexes . Subject Headings used in the PAC are defined in the Library of Congress Subject Headings books located near the General Reference Desk on the first floor. When conducting research on a particular author, it is important to remember to search for books about an author by searching for the author as a subject . Selecting author will allow you to locate only those books actually written by an author.

African American Literature
Having its origins in the slave narratives and the folktales transmitted orally during that period, the literature of the African American has been rich and varied. Beginning with the first published work of fiction ( Clotel; Or, the President's Daug hter ) in 1853, continuing under the influence of W.E.B. Du Bois during the first part of this century, and reaching a flowering during the Harlem Renaissance, major contributions have been made to American literature. Today African American writers , such as Toni Morrison, Alex Haley, and Maya Angelou are recognized as among the most significant and popular authors in this country. The following topics are the major divisions in this section dealing with African American literature in general. If you are more interested in a specific genre, go to the bottom of this page. Notes and Queries Volume 46, Number 4, December 1999 Chapbooks formed the staple reading matter of ordinary people during the eighteenth and much of the nineteenth centuries; they were also read by children of the gentry. They included fiction, almanacs, religious guidance and radical political tracts, and were available throughout the British Isles and in colonial America. The chapbook romances included in this volume derive from tales of chivalric adventure and courtly love current in the Middle Ages or the Renaissance. They have features in common with similar texts which were available all over Europe.
