GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE COLLECTION
The English collection primarily supports the interests of the English Department The English Department offers four degrees: the BA, the MA in Creative Writing, and the MA and the PhD in English. Courses are offered in language and linguistics, in creative writing, and in literature; the latter program offers a full range of classes in literary genres and time periods, individual authors, and literary movements, as well as in literary theory and the history of criticism. Included among the distinguished faculty are Nobel Laureates Saul Bellow and Derek Walcott, and former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky. Faculty members are associated with the journal Studies in Romanticism , which is published by the GRS, with AGNI , which is published at the University, and with Literary Imagination . Some faculty also teach in the interdisciplinary core curriculum in CAS. The English collection also serves students and faculty in other academic programs. Metropolitan College offers a Bachelor of Liberal Studies in English. Theatre Arts, Modern Foreign Languages and Literatures, the University Professors, the Editorial Institute, the CAS College Writing Program, the College of Communication, the College of General Studies, and the Center for English Language and Orientation Programs (CELOP) make use of the collection. In addition, the larger University community relies upon the literature collection for recreational reading.

FORREST CARTER Forrest Carter.
The Education of Little Tree. Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, 1986.
Call Number: PS 3553 .A777 Z464 1986 c.2 This charming memoir is ostensibly about Carter’s childhood in the Tennessee mountains with his Cherokee grandparents. His publisher reported that he was "Storyteller in Council to the Cherokee Nations," and that "he uses the council storytelling method of the Indian in passing on the history of his people." Many years after the publication of his "memoir," it was discovered that Carter was not a Cherokee, but a white man from Alabama who had once been a propagandist for George Wallace. This revelation raised the question of "authenticity"in Native American literature: whose experience as a Native American is authentic enough to bestow the proper "authority?" Memoir or fiction

General Survey of the American Sonnet
From The Sonnet in American Literature
By Lewis Sterner
One might well ask of this chronological survey of a hundred and fifty years of American sonnet writing these very specific questions: To what extent has the sonnet been used by American poets? What changes in form has the sonnet undergone? To what degree has the sonnet been a genuine poetic vehicle in American poetry, and to what extent has it been merely a convenient and conventional prosodic exercise? To what new uses, if any, has it been put, particularly by the younger, more frankly experimental, verse writers of this country? The best answer to the first question is the long list of two hundred and three American poets who have used the sonnet form, and the formidable number of sonnets they wrote. (See pages 123-128.) The late appearance of the sonnet form in American poetrythe fourth quarter of the eighteenth century being the earliest date that can possibly be assigned to our first specimen, Addressed to My Friends at Yale College Once, however, the sonnet had made an appearance in American literature, it found almost universal favor. The American poets of major or minor rank who have not, according to their ordinarily accepted collected works, used the sonnet form at all are not very numerous. The obvious danger of negative assertion prohibits a categorical list of such writers. Rather, the absence of any poet's name from the chronological survey and alphabetical lists which follow must be accepted as a tacit acknowledgment of the author's failure to locate any sonnets by that particular writer.

American Literature: Colonial Knowledge of what we might now call homosexuality in early British America comes to usthrough court documents, letters, sermons, travel narrativesin the frequently reticent languages of sodomy and love, of act and affect. What we (often rightly) interpret as a reluctance in these texts to name or specify sanctioned behaviors is, in many cases, an effect of a need to read these texts in a certain way, to find in them evidence of connection to contemporary behavior and identity. There are in fact many textsranging in tone from scandalized to exuberantthat engage in frank descriptions of what was done and what was felt by these earlier Americans. The reasons for that frankness (and that scandal and exuberance) are perhaps what is underarticulated. Sponsor Message.

    SCOPE
In American literature, the greatest breadth and depth of the Library's collections probably lies in its classified holdings. This overview, therefore, emphasizes those holdings while referring secondarily to manuscript, recorded, and microform, and other related formats and materials.
    SIZE
A 1989 survey showed the Library's collections in the classification for American literature numbered approximately 116,000 titles, more than twice as many as the other eighteen large U.S. university libraries surveyed. In addition the Library's holdings include well over 200,000 titles classed as fiction in English, most of which are American works. The Library holds several hundred bibliographies in American literature, as well as numerous additional bibliographies relating to American literature in other areas (drama, fiction, general literature, and individual authors). Finally, many thousands of works of literary significance are classed as general interest magazines, as poetry, drama, and in other parts of the cataloged collections.
    GENERAL RESEARCH STRENGTHS
The main strength of the Library's collections in American literature is comprehensiveness. It has long been the Library's policy to collect all monographs by American authors whose writings are generally regarded as having literary merit, as representing important trends in serious creative writing, or as presenting significant criticism and discussion of literature, and all periodicals whose contents consist principally of these writings. Manuscript materials relating to American literature feature the papers of Walt Whitman and include those of other authors representative of nineteenth- and twentieth-century literary movements, forms, and points of view. Several microform collections supplement the Library's print materials relating to American literature, particularly for early and nineteenth-century books and periodicals.
