  • Urbanization, industrialization, and immigration had altered national demographics of the 1920s. Despite facing racism and segregation in the North, African Americans became an important part of the cultural fabric of the nation. The era following World War I, marked by tremendous social upheaval and economic and political devastation, gave rise to modernism. Because modernism was an international movement, it was seen by some to conflict with American literary traditions. During the Harlem Renaissance, black Americans such as Langston Hughes and Zora Neale Hurston became prominent and applied modernist techniques to speak of the realities of black cultural and political life. Women writers also contributed in vital ways to the heterogeneity of the literature during the interwar period. A final, but significant, artistic development in the interwar period is in the realm of drama.

N. Scott Momaday
Courtesy, University New Mexico Press Navarre Scott Momaday (1934- ), a Native American of Kiowa and Cherokee descent, was raised in the American Southwest on various Native American reservations. His mother and father both worked as teachers in Native American schools, but they also pursued artistic interests: Momaday's mother was a writer, his father a painter.
Like his parents, Momaday has been both a teacher and writer. Since earning a bachelor's degree at the University of New Mexico, and an M.A. and a Ph.D. at Stanford, Momaday has held tenured appointments at the University of California, Berkeley; UC Santa Barbara; Stanford; and the University of Arizona. He has been honored for his poetry and prose with numerous awards: His debut novel, House Made of Dawn , was the first by a Native American author to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize. He has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a National Institute of Arts and Letters Award, and the Premio Letterario Internationale Mondello, Italy's highest literary honor.

The author indexes of the latest volumes of Contemporary Literary Criticism or Twentieth Century Literary Criticism will be useful in some instances. Ask at the Reference Desk about the MLA in electronic form. For more general literary guides also ask at the Desk.
