Margaret Fuller
American Literature; Its Position in the Present Time, and Prospects for the Future
from her Papers on Literature and Art
Some thinkers may object to this essay, that we are about to write of that which has, as yet, no existence. For it does not follow because many books are written by persons born in America that there exists an American literature. Books which imitate or represent the thoughts and life of Europe do not constitute an American literature. Before such can exist, an original idea must animate this nation and fresh currents of life must call into life fresh thoughts along its shores. We have no sympathy with national vanity. We are not anxious to prove that there is as yet much American literature. Of those who think and write among us in the methods and of the thoughts of Europe, we are not impatient; if their minds are still best adapted to such food and such action. If their books express life of mind and character in graceful forms, they are good and we like them. We consider them as colonists and useful schoolmasters to our people in a transition state; which lasts rather longer than is occupied in passing, bodily, the ocean which separates the new from the old world. Yet there is, often, between child and parent, a reaction from excessive influence having been exerted, and such an one we have experienced, in behalf of our country, against England. We use her language, and receive, in torrents, the influence of her thought, yet it is, in many respects, uncongenial and injurious to our constitution. What suits Great Britain, with her insular position and consequent need to concentrate and intensify her life, her limited monarchy, and spirit of trade, does not suit a mixed race, continually enriched with new blood from other stocks the most unlike that of our first descent, with ample field and verge enough to range in and leave every impulse free, and abundant opportunity to develop a genius, wide and full as our rivers, flowery, luxuriant and impassioned as our vast prairies, rooted in strength as the rocks on which the Puritan fathers landed.

FORREST CARTER Forrest Carter.
The Education of Little Tree. Albuquerque: University of New Mexico Press, 1986.
Call Number: PS 3553 .A777 Z464 1986 c.2 This charming memoir is ostensibly about Carter’s childhood in the Tennessee mountains with his Cherokee grandparents. His publisher reported that he was "Storyteller in Council to the Cherokee Nations," and that "he uses the council storytelling method of the Indian in passing on the history of his people." Many years after the publication of his "memoir," it was discovered that Carter was not a Cherokee, but a white man from Alabama who had once been a propagandist for George Wallace. This revelation raised the question of "authenticity"in Native American literature: whose experience as a Native American is authentic enough to bestow the proper "authority?" Memoir or fiction

Essays on Teaching the American Literatures

    Teaching Asian American Literature
    by Amy Ling
    University of Wisconsin-Madison

I find it useful to begin my Introduction to Asian American literature classes with a discussion of terminology. First, I deconstruct the term oriental, explaining that as a signifier of someone or something of Asian origin it is no longer viable since it is burdened with all the negative connotations of inferiority, irrationality, and exoticism that Edward Said clearly delineated in his groundbreaking cultural history Orientalism. (NY: 1978) By contrast, the term Asian is a neutral geographical designation and therefore more acceptable. Next, I explore the rather fluid boundaries of the terms Asian, American, and literature. Asia, as the world's largest continent, stretches from what used to be the U.S.S.R, west of the Ural Mountains, as far east as the Bering Strait, and as far south as the Indian Ocean; it is separated from Africa by the Suez Canal, includes all of the Middle East as well as the islands of the South Pacific. However, the boundaries of Asia as employed by scholars of Asian American literature have been much more limited, focused primarily on writers of so-called East Asian origins. [East Asia is only east in relation to Europe, of course; from an American perspective, China, Japan, and Korea are the Near West.] Kai-yu Hsu and Helen Palubinskas, editors of the first anthology in the field
