Development Studies
Courses in the Development Studies Stream have been selected to provide students with a broad, interdisciplinary education focusing on the conditions and problems of less-developed countries comprising the so-called "Third World", the history and theory of economic development around the world, and the geographic and environmental consequences of "development".
The recommended courses in this stream include examinations of specific aspects of third world development in all of the disciplines involved in the program. These include courses in the history of European expansion and colonialism, anthropology and sociology courses dealing with comparative cultural and social change, history, political studies, geography and economics courses which deal with specific regions of the third world and courses which discuss in a broad international context issues of particular importance to development (resource use, the environment, urbanization, health, gender, indigenous issues, and agriculture). Courses of particular relevance from the Departments of Native Studies, Women and Gender Studies and Community Health and Epidemiology are also included.
Students specializing in this stream will also have the opportunity (and will be strongly encouraged) to study aspects of development in field courses and study abroad programs held outside of Canada. These currently include opportunities to study in Central and South America and Africa. With the approval of the Coordinator of the International Studies Program, such courses may take the place of recommended courses in this stream.

History and Description of State and Regional Quilt Inventories History and Description of the Michigan Quilt Project (MQP) Michigan began its own inventory in 1984 under the direction of the Michigan State University Museum and continues today with the dedicated participation of volunteers throughout the state. The goal was simply to document quiltsregardless of age, technique, or original provenance-that had meaning to a Michigander or Michigan organization. Since the Michigan Quilt Project (MQP) began, over 75 Quilt Discovery Days have been held at libraries, museums, extension offices, churches, and other locations throughout the state. Special efforts were made during 1986 to record quilting in the Upper Peninsula and African American quilting, both traditions that were under-represented in the first year of the project. The Michigan Quilt Project Collection The Michigan Quilt Project (MQP) Collection consists of photographs, oral history interviews, over 7000 quilt inventory forms, and ephemera associated with the state's quilt documentation project. Housed at the Michigan State University Museum, the collection serves as an important source of data for research, education, and exhibitions projects. The Michigan Quilt Project Collection provided the data for an initial survey exhibition and accompanying publication

BOOK REVIEW
- by Carol Standish A
s the nineteenth century marched on, an increasingly sizeable portion of the Western world was stirred, not shaken, by the entrepreneurial brainstorm of one Frederic Tudor. A “diminutive, pig-headed” Bostonian, Tudor was one of the most remarkable businessmen of his times. The Frozen Water Trade by Gavin Weightman (Hyperion, 247pp, $23.95) is the story of the man “who dedicated most of his life to supplying ice to the tropics,” long before the invention of artificial refrigeration. D uring his privileged childhood Frederic and his siblings enjoyed ice cream and iced drinks in the summer. Ice cut from the farm pond in winter was stored in an icehouse for the express purpose of warm weather refreshment. In the summer of 1805, Frederic, then 22, and his older brother William were enjoying that very luxury at a family picnic when it dawned on Frederic (so the story goes) that there was money to be made shipping such a commodity to the West Indies and other hot climates. T he first square-rigged sailing vessel to carry a cargo of ice left Boston on February 10, 1806. The departure was reported in the Boston Gazette:

Histroy on the Internet You will find here a collection of some of the best history sites available on the web. From British to European to American and World history, to organizations, newsgroups, mailing lists and indices, we have sifted through the many history web pages available on the Internet. One of the wonderful facets (and one of its drawbacks) of the World Wide Web is that anyone can create a web page. Mirroring this, the world wide web has attracted both professional and amateur historians, who maintain web sites either as part of a grant-funded project, as a professional endeavor, or simply as a hobby. Some of those pages are great, others are not worth visiting. So, then, what is the purpose of this site? Is it a collection of links, like those that exist on so many other pages on the 'net? Well, yes and no. It is a collection of links in the sense that you will find dozens and dozens of links to history sites all over the world. However, the collection you'll find here is not intended to be comprehensive, nor, in fact, does it contain the most popular history web sites around. Instead you'll find here some of the best web pages out there.

Thirty Years of the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER)
October 26, 2000 - May 20, 2001
The Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) documents historically significant engineering and industrial works throughout the United States. Established in 1969, HAER is administered by the National Park Service, with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and other engineering societies serving in an advisory capacity. The Library of congress is the repository for the collection.
Over the past three decades, the Historic American Engineering Record has created a singular public archive documenting engineering marvels and industrial icons. This exhibition showcases a tiny fragment of HAER 's legacy. Many of the sites were recorded as key examples of the technological advances that emerged from the increased industrialization and mechanization of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Other documented sites represent milestones in engineering. Others are notable for their commonality. All are part of America's rich industrial and engineering heritage.
