Henry Adams, the American historian and the grandson and great-grandson of presidents, said the president "resembles the commander of a ship at sea. He must have a helm to grasp, a course to steer, a port to seek." Indeed, each of our presidents has taken America on a slightly different voyagevoyages shaped largely by how each sitting president has defined the institution of the presidency. Some have been more bold and adventuresome than othersworking to mold public opinion and actively pushing their programs through Congress. Others have not ventured farfeeling that presidential intervention often causes more problems than it solves.

on Political Cartoonist Herb Block
People say “a picture is worth a thousand words.” But when it comes to politics, it’s probably more accurate to say a picture is better than any words. Political cartoons have jabbed at national leaders for hundreds of years. Using presidential phrases like “I am not a crook” or “I did not have sex with that woman,” cartoonists ridicule the obvious disparities between words and conduct. Each cartoon implicitly asks its subject, “How stupid do you really think the public is?!” Some of the most famous political cartoons are maintained by national archives. Let’s take a look at the best of Herb Block as profiled by the Library of Congress. GO TO CHAPTER 2 Author: Carole D. Bos, J.D.

National African American History Month, 2003
By the President of the United States of America
A Proclamation

frican Americans have played central roles in some of the most triumphant and courageous moments in our Nation's history. During National African American History Month, we honor the rich heritage of African Americans and pay tribute to their many contributions to our Nation. As we celebrate this year's theme, "The Souls of Black Folk: Centennial Reflections," we remember the successes and challenges of our past. We also resolve to honor the achievements and legacy of these proud citizens by continuing to improve our society so that it fully lives up to our founding ideals.
In 1915, Dr. Carter Godwin Woodson recognized the need for our country to gain a more complete and informed understanding of our past. He founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History and established the first Negro History Week to emphasize that "We have a wonderful history behind us . . . " Through the pioneering efforts of Dr. Woodson and the hard work of the Association, this observance officially became Black History Month in 1976.
For generations, African Americans have strengthened our Nation by urging reforms, overcoming obstacles, and breaking down barriers. We see the greatness of America in those who have risen above injustice and enriched our society, a greatness reflected in the resolve of Jackie Robinson, the intellect of W.E.B. DuBois, and the talent of Louis Armstrong. We also gain a deeper appreciation for the AfricanAmerican experience in the writings of James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, and Zora Neal Hurston, as well as in the music of Mahalia Jackson, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, and countless others.

In the fall of 1962 the college town of Oxford, Mississippi, erupted in violence. At the center of the controversy stood James Meredith, an African American who was attempting to register at the all-white University of Mississippi, known as "Ole Miss." Meredith had the support of the federal government, which insisted that Mississippi honor the rights of all its citizens, regardless of race. Mississippi's refusal led to a showdown between state and federal authorities and the storming of the campus by a segregationist mob. Two people died and dozens were injured. In the end, Ole Miss, the state of Mississippi, and the nation were forever changed.
This site lets visitors witness the events firsthand through the actual letters, recorded telephone conversations, and images of those who made history.

Column: Leo Koziol - Naked in Nuhaka
Naked in Nuhaka
By Leo Koziol The Maori American Presidential Candidate WELLINGTON PONEKE, AOTEAROA NEW ZEALAND (8 August, 2004): Independent Maori MP Wiremu Clinton's electorate seat became vacant on May 11, a parliamentary select committee has found. Parliament's privileges committee has been considering whether Mr. Clinton breached the Electoral Act when he applied to have his Maori nationality restored. It found he had, and as such his seat was vacant, under section 55(99)(b) of the Electoral Act. The Government is now likely to introduce retrospective legislation to solve an issue Mr. Clinton has predicted could affect "heaps" of MPs. Mr. Clinton was caught by a clause in the 1992 Electoral Act that requires a seat to become vacant if its MP makes a declaration or acknowledges allegiance to "any foreign prince or power". The issue came to light when Mr. Clinton applied to renew his Ngati Tangata passport, which involved pledge of allegiance to the Maori Queen and 1835 Maori Declaration of Independence. The parliamentary select committee entered into urgent debate about whether "Maori queen" can be defined the same as "foreign prince." Ngati Tangata passports are currently recognised in Fiji, Tonga, South Africa, Libya, Djibouti, the Ureweras, and the Free Republics of Okarito, Whangamomona, and Nuhaka.
