American Presidential History Timeline: 1869 to 1901 The Ulysses S. Grant Administration (Republican, 1869-1877) 1868 election map 1872 election map Late in the administration of Andrew Johnson, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant quarreled with the President and aligned himself with the Radical Republicans. He was, as the symbol of Union victory during the Civil War, their logical candidate for President in 1868. When he was elected, the American people hoped for an end to turmoil. Grant provided neither vigor nor reform. Looking to Congress for direction, he seemed bewildered. One visitor to the White House noted "a puzzled pathos, as of a man with a problem before him of which he does not understand the terms." In his 1869 inaugural address , Grant spoke of ensuring the right to vote regardless of "race, color or previous condition of servitude." He worked hard his first year in office to get the Fifteenth Amendment passed. But his political inexperience began to show almost immediately. Grant was deeply haunted by the failures of his early life and he was loyal out of all proportion to anyone who had ever been nice to him. As a result, he appointed his friends to office and soon his administration was racked with incompetence and corruption.

As our Founding Fathers worked to develop the framework of our Nation, Abigail Adams wrote to her husband: "I long to hear that you have declared an independency and by the way in the new Code of Laws which I suppose it will be necessary for you to make I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors." An early advocate of women's rights, a farm and financial manager, and the mother of an American President, John Quincy Adams, Abigail Adams is one of many American women who helped establish the strength and vitality of our Nation. During Women's History Month, we recognize the generations of American women whose important contributions continue to shape our Nation and enrich our society. Through vision, hard work, and determination, countless American women have broadened opportunities for themselves and for others at home, in the community, and in the workplace. In 1809, Mary Kies became the first woman to receive a U.S. patent. By developing a method of weaving straw with silk, she helped advance American industry and set an inspiring example for other American women. Her pioneering efforts helped define our country's entrepreneurial spirit and paved the way for future generations of women to take pride in their talents and creativity.

American Celebration on Parade
Parades are among the oldest forms of organized celebrations. They are said to date back to 3000 BC as religious observances. Romans held civil parades called triumphs to celebrate special occasions. American celebrations range from observances of important historical events, such as July 4th, to religious and ethnic holidays to secular and sports events. From community and high school homecoming parades to grand, national events, Americans love to celebrate. The idea for American Celebration on Parade , which opened in July, 2000, began nearly 30 years earlier. Earl Hargrove, owner of Shenandoah Caverns , had long produced floats for prestigious parades throughout the nation and served as a principal contractor for every presidential inaugural since Harry Truman’s in 1949. Mr. Hargrove had purchased many floats that had appeared in the Rose Parade over the years and adapted them for use in other parades. He wanted to create a revolving exhibition of famous parade floats the public would recognize from the Rose Parade, Presidential Inaugurals, Thanksgiving parades, and many others.

Article The Presidential Election and the Vengeance of History By Kenneth R. Maxwell Noticia e Opinio November 10, 2000 The consequences of November 7 will not be confined to Washington, DC. The high priests of the television networks, among whom, not so long ago, was numbered "the most trusted man in America," the venerable Walter Cronkite, all made fools of themselves on election night, first by pronouncing victory for Gore, then Bush, then twice retracting their confident benedictions. Despite their fancy charts, flashing maps, and solemn punditry, they lost all credibility, though they have yet to realize to what extent. And the pollsters, those merry goblins of the information age, have been revealed as purveyors of misleading nonsense. The most serious stake in the election crisis however is the credibility of the very constitutional system itself, that glory of the 18th century Founders of the American Republic, and an edifice which has served the nation well through so many storms, challenges and even civil war. It has been revealed to need serious overhaul in its most archaic provisions. This too is a divisive debate which is bound to come. And in face of the unprecedented uncertainty about who won and who lost on November 7, the American public looks on in disbelieve and increasing repugnance. Before it unfolds by the hour, a sorry spectacle exposing to the light of day those usually well hidden back rooms of American politics where ambition, money, power and betrayal rub shoulders in the dark.

By the President of the United States of America
A Proclamation African American History Month
During National African American History Month, we honor the heritage and accomplishments of African Americans and recognize their extraordinary contributions to the United States. African Americans have upheld the ideals of America, defended our homeland, and enriched American culture and society. Brave leaders such as Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman, Booker T. Washington, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Leon Sullivan caused America to examine its heart and to respect the dignity and equality of all people, regardless of race. Today, African Americans are leaders at the highest levels of the military, business, education, law, government, the arts, sports, and religion. To help share the stories of the millions of African Americans who have strengthened our country, I recently signed legislation establishing the National Museum of African American History and Culture as a part of the Smithsonian Institution. This museum will commemorate the triumphs of African Americans their determination in overcoming the evil of slavery and discrimination and their many achievements and contributions to our Nation.
