Early American History
Written accounts from the 1700s and 1800s
Have a look at what really happened in the early days of America. This is probably not the same history that you learned in school. What you will see here is unvarnished and raw, directly from the 1700s, 1800s and early 1900s. It is real people talking with and about each other, expressing their thoughts, feelings, and ambitions. Here is the real pioneer spirit at its best and worst. You have been cautioned. Read these accounts with your brain engaged. Now, please enjoy a little time-travel, and learn about the people who laid the foundations of America. It will likely change the way you view our society and current affairs worldwide. These archives are presented in two sections. The Archive Library contains complete works for original research. The Topical Archives are the product of other people's research, and are subject-specific compilations of material from multiple sources.

Celebrating Black History
African-American Athletic Pioneers
at the University of Wisconsin, 1900-1970
Until recently, the number of African-American students at the University of Wisconsin has been quite small. Nevertheless, this vibrant community produced more than its share of varsity Badger athletes. From the earliest black Olympic medallist and the Big Ten’s first African-American team captain to the conference’s first black starting quarterback, UW’s pioneering African-American athletes frequently blazed a trail for others to follow. Before now, however, there had been few attempts to record the experiences of Wisconsin’s path-breaking black players. At long last, this is their story.
Unfortunately, piecing together their history at UW has not been an easy task, particularly for those who played before 1940. Like most schools, Wisconsin did not regularly record the race of its students for much of the 20th century, making the identification of African-Americans on campus a difficult process. Of Wisconsin’s pre-WWII black athletes, only Olympian George Poage turns up in the standard reference works on blacks in college athletics. Accordingly, campus publications and team photographs yielded most of the information on the earliest African-American sportsmen on campus. These are both, at best, imperfect sources, and there may be other overlooked pioneers.

This site is undergoing major maintenance and will not be updated until this is complete. The music may not be availble for a period of time while this is being done. I appreciate your patience.
    • The tunes here were not all written by Americans, but are songs that were known in America. Most songs of the Colonial and Revoltionary Era were songs that originated in England, Scotland and Ireland and immigrated with their people.
    • These dates are, of course, not perfect. I have struggled to put them in APPROXIMATE/BEST GUESS date order. If you have an educated correction, please let me know. A few tunes are listed more than once to make clear they were popular in several eras.
    • If you wish to use any of these tunes in an archive or on a webpage READ THIS
    • If you are looking for a particular tune, the fastest way to find it is to use the Search Engine. The search engine covers the entire site so it will find more than just American songs.

    President Ronald Reagan Died Today
It is hard to ignore the fact that President Ronald Reagan , the only president since Eisenhower to completely serve out two terms in office, had a huge impact on America and the makeup of the entire global community. One impotant example: he was key in the breakup of the former Soviet Union. President Reagan died today, June 5, 2004, at the age of 93. He will be remembered as a good natured person and great communicator who rose to power and served in the highest office in the United States. Read some quotes from President Reagan to learn more about the man and his beliefs.
