AN AUDIO TIMELINE A selection of significant events, inventions, products and their purveyors, from cylinder to DVD
The road that leads us from Edison's tin-foil cylinder to today's audio DVD is a fascinating avenue crammed with remarkable people, inventions and innovations. Our past accomplishments contribute to what we are today, and signpost the future as a never-ending quest to push the envelope of what is possible in audio. In 1997 the Committee for the Fiftieth Anniversary of the AES was formed to increase the awareness of where we have been and what we have accomplished. Part of that effort was directed to the creation of an Audio Timeline, compiled by Jerry Bruck, Al Grundy and Irv Joel. It is intended to be a selection of significant events, inventions, products and their purveyors. This Timeline is not complete, and probably never could be, given the wealth of discoveries, inventions and innovative products that did and do appear almost daily. Nor are the dates given always precise, depending as they often do on second hand documents or dim memories. We hope you will return to this page often to check on the evolution of our Timeline, as the first of many pieces to be generated by the Historical Committee as this Site expands.

Faculty may check out material for the current academic year. All academic year and current semester loans are subject to recall after three weeks. Documents and maps circulate from the main circulation desk. Atlases shelved in the Maps Reference Area do not circulate, however atlases shelved in the third floor stacks may be checked out for the same periods as other Stacks materials.
    U.S. Government Documents
The most substantial collection in this area is that of U.S. Government Documents. The library is a selective depository for federal publications and receives about half of the publications distributed by the U.S. Government Printing Office. These publications are produced by virtually every agency, bureau, and unit of the three branches of government. The collection contains books, congressional hearings, research reports, journals, pamphlets, laws, and electronic databases produced by the U.S. Government at the expense of the tax payers. The collection consists of paper, microfiche, CD-ROM format documents, and Internet resources. Some items in the collection are more than a century old, but most are from the past 30 years. In addition, it is possible to access a wide range of U.S. government information sources through the World Wide Web. A good starting point for doing this is the library's Home Page section:
