TOBACCO HISTORY SITES
MISSION: This page is designed to provide annotated links to internet resources providing information on tobacco history - especially the earliest centuries, those pre-contact years that have been ignored by previous tobacco historians. Tobacco was used by the peoples of the Americas for millennia before Columbus, but most chronologies of tobacco history begin on 12 October 1492. In other words, thousands of years of history of dozens of nations and cultures covering two continents has been reduced to a few, often inaccurate, sentences. This web page is now dedicated to uncovering and connecting the reader to this 'lost history' - as well as to the usual post-contact tobacco history. last update: 2 July 2002

Unchained Memories: Readings from the Slave Narratives Exhibition
The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, Cincinnati, Ohio, is organizing an exhibition to complement and expand upon Unchained Memories: Readings from the Slave Narratives , the film produced by HBO. This exhibition will begin its national museum tour in late Spring 2003 at Brown University, Providence, RI, and will subsequently be shown at other selected venues around the country including the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, Broward County, FL, before coming to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center after its opening in the summer of 2004. This exhibition and its national tour are presented thanks to the generous sponsorship of AOL Time Warner Incorporated.
The exhibition is distinguished by its strong multi-media presentation, selected to complement the HBO film. A theatrical multi-screen display in an Orientation Gallery will greet the visitor and introduce the major themes in the exhibition, film, and accompanying publication. Interactive Learning Centers, housed in an architectural setting reminiscent of Freedom's Flame, the Freedom Center's logo, will showcase the multifaceted HBO community outreach and educational programs developed in conjunction with the release of the HBO film. These state-of-the-art interactive presentations containing audio and video clips along with a searchable database of over 10,000 images of original documents and photographs, include: l. Information about the film; 2. An overview of the museum exhibition and tour; 3. Excerpts from and information about the Bulfinch Press publication; 4. Classroom materials developed by Time for Kids and HBO; 5. Selections from the Library of Congress

Her mission was to protect American shipping in the Mediterranean on which the Barbary corsairs were preying. In August 1804, the American Navy massed enough ships to attack the heavily defended harbor of Tripoli. American ships bombarded the harbor and engaged Tripolian vessels five times during August and early September 1804. The documents that follow are excerpts from Captain Edward Preble's journal as well as the log book kept by Nathaniel Haraden, Constitution 's sailing master, detailing the attacks of August 3, 7, and 28, as well as the final action on September 3.
